After her trip on the River Thames, we stayed closer to “home” the following day. Traffic seemed very light for London, as we wandered along the Thames towpath towards Kew Bridge. The tide was well out and the house boats moored on the Brentford side were marooned on the mud. The flow of water between Brentford Ait and Lot’s Ait was almost non-existent. The islands on this section are called Ait and Fullers new bar on the edge of the St Georges complex by the bridge is imaginatively called One Over The Ait. Ait is the local name for small island in the river. The resident heron had abandoned his usual venue and moved to the other side of the Ait to watch for his breakfast arriving on the incoming tide. The path followed a strange ... read more

Thirty minutes west out of the city one alights at a small station called Kew Gardens. Exiting the station small local shops on both sides of the road offer shoe repair, fresh meat, used books, drugs, creams, coffee, wedge, real estate are passed as the road leads to the the Famous landmark. And what pretty houses there are; well kept, manicured, gravel roaded, hedge trimmed, upscale cars polished. And this all under the unrelenting emission of jet fuel from the planes in the Heathrow flightpath. Not one or two or even three or four but an all day busy corridor of jets leaving for points unknown. At Victoria Gate the lady who volunteers by selling tickets comes from North Bay, Canada. The tour of the Garden began at 11.00. Mary the tour guide had worked at ... read more

Following last night’s thunderstorm we were hoping for a clear warm day. Unfortunately the day looks as though it will rain at any moment. If we put our activities on hold because of the weather then we wouldn’t do anything. Our plan for today is to visit Kew Gardens. We haven’t been there before. To get to Kew we take the train. Actually three trains. All trains travel above ground but two are called underground. Quite confusing really. We start with the Metropolitan Underground, change to the Jubilee Underground, and then finally the Overground train. The train journey around London takes about ninety minutes with connections working perfectly. The walk from the station to the Gardens is along a tree lined street with some very nice houses, all of the same design and age. Painters are ... read more

The pursuit of a cheap Travelodge had taken us north to Wembley. Well, the North Circular Road to be precise. The no man’s land between Hangar Lane and Wembley is car driver country and the chaotic traffic makes running a bus schedule almost impossible. We stood at Ealing Common and patiently waited, cursing the apparent lack of a schedule. The no show transpired to be the other prevailing issue in the Capital at present – a security scare. A bomb scare at Ealing Broadway. We made it back to base eventually. As I closed our tripled glazed outer window, I chuckled to myself at the notice by the lift of our accommodation. "Floor 3 is a Quiet Floor". The following morning the sun was shining brightly into the room and I was awake early. The 3 ... read more

As expected, it took over an hour to travel to Osterley Park by tube. Upon the arrival, we followed the footpath along the Avenue. We found brown and white cows and calves grazing on the pasture field on the left hand on the way to the main entrance. As planned, we sat on the grass and had a picnic on the main lawn surrounded by the house and lake. There were a lot of people, either sitting on the grass or playing football, or having a picnic. After the lunch, we started strolling through the formal garden. We found a couple of old trees which have been surviving for more than 200 years and have been preserved by the National Trust, and the reconstructed 18th century garden. There were a wide variety of tulips, forget-me-not, violas, ... read more

Sachi’s mum, Mrs Shinobu Negishi, is interested in plants. There are some gardens where they could offer attractions over the winter period. Kew Gardens is one of them. Hence, I took her there on Wednesday, 13 February. Like the previous day when they arrived in London, it was bitterly cold on 13 February. Mrs Negishi treated me to the entrance fees for Kew Gardens. On entering the Victorian gate, the Palm House and lake appeared in front of us. She noticed some shrubs opening flowers and found a number of snowdrops, hellebores, etc, on the Woodland Gardens. Having heard about the orchid exhibition, we headed for the Princess of Wales Conservatory. We firstly strolled through the Dessert room with the collections of cacti, and then looked round the orchid exhibition in the Rainforest room. There were ... read more

The recent advertisement by David Nash at Kew had really attracted us and we decided to visit there on 9 October 2012. The last time I visited Kew Gardens was June 2010 when I showed two of my mother’s friends in London. I told Mark that several new attractions had been added to Kew Garden and admission fees had been raised. Mark is a very generous man. He treated me to the Kew Garden paying £16 each for the admissions which included the Gift aid to support the conservation work for Kew Gardens on 9 October. Exploring in the parkland in the mid autumn, we saw a number of trees’ foliage turning their colours, e.g. brownish, yellow, red and purple and starting to fall on the ground. We saw myriads of purple crocuses blooming on the ... read more

We’ve been keeping a weather eye on the Met Office’s forecasts lately. Rain, you see, has become a regular feature of daily life here in England in recent months. Lots and lots of the wet stuff. The best day last week – let me rephrase that: the only day without rain last week - was forecast to be Wednesday. So Wednesday it would be. You must have good weather for an outing to the Royal Botanic Gardens. I come from a family of gardeners. My old dad won the “Best Garden in Wembley Competition” so many times he was asked to stop entering to give someone else a chance! We only have a small, low-maintenance garden these days, so my wife gave me an all-expenses-paid trip to Kew for a birthday present. I wouldn’t have to ... read more
