Hiiiii everybody!
Sorry about the very long space between updates of this thing but for the past two weeks I have been a) staying in a friend of a friends house, and b) staying in a hostel, so we had no way to access the internet unless we were willing to pay. And seeing as Alex and I are struggling backpackers we were not willing to pay.
Unfortunately I have a horrible memory sooo I will only be able to remember portions of what we've been doing and definitely not in the right order but I will try and make a bit of sense atleast.
On Tuesday the 3rd of July we caught the train down from Manchester to London. When we were on the train these three people asked if they could take our seats (we were at a table of 4) and we could swap them for the two seats behind. We agreed and THEN they offered us their first class tickets that only went as far as Milton Keynes (we had no idea how far that was) but we DECLINED. How bloody stupid are we. I think it was just that we couldn't be
bothered moving our suitcases all the way to first class. The seat we ended up sitting in was horrible, cramped and had no window. So the moral of the story is ALWAYS accept first class seats when they are offered.
We arrived at Euston station in London in the afternoon and somehow made our way to Leytonstone in peak hour with our suitcases. We were staying with a family friend's (thanks Annette and Kylie!) friend Sammy who had us for a couple of days which was incredibly nice of her. Oliver arrived in London the day after us so for that week we did stuff with him. On the first day we went to St Paul's Cathedral but didn't actually go inside 'cause it was really expensive. Although, in the afternoon we were back there again and we went inside for a quick look and there was no one checking tickets so we walked through. But then we were handed a Psalm book and were told to take a seat. We did and for the next hour we sat through Evensong inside St Paul's Cathedral. It was actually kinda nice sitting inside there listening to the choir.
Another
day we went to the British Museum and I tried to make my own sandwich at home and take it for lunch... it didn't work (see picture). British Museum was great but we could only do one level that day so we need to go there again. The next two days Alex and I got lost around Westminster Abbey over and over again. Now we hate that place. Even though it looks nice it is EVIL. Don't think i've ever walked so much in my life as we did around Westminster Abbey (apart from the death hike up Mt Kosciusko). Oh we went to the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace! We got there a bit late though so we couldn't get very close to the palace. The band played all the same songs we played in Senior Band at school though. So that obviously means the Burwood Girls High School Senior Band is as good as the band that play at Buckingham Palace! Obviously. They also played the tune our school song was written to, which got that in my head for the next day.
On Saturday night we saw Frank Sidebottom which was brilliant! I still
haven't been able to meet him properly and get a photo with him buuuut he did get me to unwrap paper plates for him during the show. He also asked what my name was and incorporated me into one of his songs hehe. It was his own version of We Will Rock You. Oh and Oliver won one of his art competitions (everyone had to draw a picture of Frank on a paper plate) he picked Oliver's drawing at random and we won 'A Load of Cardboard'. We had to give that to someone else though. Alex and I are going to see Frank again this Sunday! Hooray!
Next day we went to this chain of bars called the Walkabout which is Australian themed haha it was pretty dodgy. We only went to watch the Socceroos game which they had a live stream of, which was shocking and kept freezing for 10 minutes at a time.
On Sunday we moved to the Generator hostel in Russel Square. It wasn't bad... it had a bar with cheap drinks, internet, free breakfast and a loungeroom type thing. We didn't spend much time there though. Monday was Oliver's last day so
we went out and had a nice pub dinner. What we did during the day has escaped me completely. Oh well.
One day we planned to get up early to go to the Tower of London but we were sharing our room with these girls from New Zealand who decided to get up at 5AM and clump around the room. So we didn't get up till ten! We did spend the entire day at the Tower of London though, we had to get our moneys worth damnit. It was grrreat there, especially all the torture devices! Though I didn't see any thumb screws which was disappointing. The next couple of days we just walked around the city (we walked EVERYWHERE) and applied for jobs and stuff. We went to Waterloo Bridge one night which supposedly has the best view over the Thames. We have decided that one night in London we have to get a black cab ride somewhere AND there's also these guys that ride bikes attached to seats all around the city so we have to get on one of those too. That is my number one priority!
I got a job at the cinemas in
Leicester Square. The movies there are weird... there's about 3 separate cinemas in Leicester Square and each shows different movies. I've got a job at the worst one at the moment it's only showing Die Hard 4, Ocean's 13 and This Is England. But Transformers starts soon. I think I will be starting work there on Friday when the midnight showing of Transformers is.
Mmm what else.. we went to Camden Markets which are great, I bought a Smiths t shirt and I bought Nick a cd by the Macc Lads, a band from Macclesfield. On Monday we moved into my cousins house which is so good after being in a hostel. My cousin Tig and her boyfriend Vinny have gone to France so we're minding the house for two weeks, we're in Clapham Junction. I think that's about all I have to write about for now, and I think I should get up and do something seeing as it's 3:30 and i'm still in my pyjamas. I will try and update this ting more often. Farewell for now.
