Postcards from Brighton
Published: September 25th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » East Sussex » BrightonI moved to Brighton in 1997, and unlike all the other places I have lived or travelled to, it is largely unexplored by me. As soon as I started to think about this, I realised there is a lot to explore. Brighton is a cultural centre, a seaside resort, a multi university city, has many historical venues, fascinating people, numerous festivals and events, a wide range of flora and fauna, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. We don't have any icebergs though! So I decided to write a blog about Brighton. I think it's the most amazing city in England, but maybe I'm just a little bit prejudiced. I'm going to cover a different aspect each time, in no particular order, just wherever my travels around the city take me. The first place most ... read more
Well I was lucky enough to spend my birthday at home for the first time in 6 years. I spent the perfect day playing golf with my friend Tom. We don't get to play much these days but we played on the golf course we used to play on when we first started at the age of 14. Neither of us had played for a while and therefore some of are shots weren't that good! I've included a little video of me playing..........don't laugh! In the evening I went to my sister house to have dinner with the whole family. One of my favourite 'English' dishes is a very simple dish. In English we call it 'bangers and mash' Bangers are sausages and Mash is potato that is mashed up. It's so easy to make but ... read more
Sunshine...........at last!
Published: September 22nd 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » East SussexWell I have finally recovered from my friends Stag party but it did take until Monday afternoon to do so. And as you may have guessed, the sun is out! Which has meant that I've been able to get out on my bike once again. Forest Row (my home town) is perfect for for riding, the air is clean and some of the scenery is really quite beautiful. Whenever I'm home I realise how incredibly lucky I was to have been born in a place of such outstanding natural beauty. I went riding once again with my Mum and Dad but left them halfway to embark on a slightly longer ride. Because Forest Row is situated in a valley whenever you ride out of the village it always requires you to ride up a hill. The ... read more
Bike rides, walking and sheep!
Published: September 17th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » East SussexWell it has finally stopped raining in England and I have managed to see a little bit of sunshine believe it or not. It's all very relaxing though. Yesterday I went cycling with Mr and Mrs Smith Senior. We have an old railway line which runs along the back of our house and it has now been turned into a cycle path. It's a beautiful place to ride. It was nice last night to also be able to watch my football team Liverpool play at a normal time instead of staying up until 2:30 a.m! Thankfully they also won. My job as an uncle seems to be to take my nieces to the park every single day, it's a tiring job as they have so much energy and are able to run around for hours and ... read more
Camping it up in KempTown
Published: September 17th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » East Sussex » BrightonHow long is it since I have updated this blog? Eons, and I have missed you - and I am sure you have all missed me ... but did any of you get me a publishing deal? No you bloody didn't, so be very grateful I am back! Well, what can I tell you - greyer, wiser (possibly), wider (definitely). In the years since I have last been here, I have held down two jobs ... yes, it surprised me too! I have also joined the local sea kayaking club. I love the sea - I swim in it regularly (in the English channel), I take dozens of photos of it, I walk along the beach, and a few times a month I stagger down Kemptown's pebble beach carrying a kayak, eventually make it into the ... read more

(For any neutral readers this blog is intended for my Chinese students in Xiamen) I've now been back in England for 2 days and yes you've guessed it, it has rained everyday since I got back. The good news is that I don't seem to be suffering from any jet lag. It's been great to see everyone again and catch up. I spent Sunday with my friends Tom and Charlotte, the people who are getting married. They had a wedding get together where I was able to meet people from Charlotte's side of the family and also see many of Tom's friends who I hadn't seen for a long time. Charlotte gave us all a schedule which listed everyones responsibilities for the 'big day' Lots of people at the get together were really interested in what ... read more

Day Trip to Brighton
Published: August 14th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » East Sussex » BrightonToday was a day trip to Brighton, about a 1 hour train ride south of London. George IV at age 19 decided to move down to Brighton and over many years developed Brighton Pavilion. When he took over from his father as King, he got Nash to work on the building and incorporate new ideas and enhance his seaside retreat. The Pavilion played an important role in his society engagements. After George IV departed, Queen Victoria found the function of the Pavilion (batchelor pad) less appealing to her family of 9. She extracted all the furniture and items that appealed to her and then sold Brighton Pavilion to the local council. The council has worked to restore this amazing building to be the similar to how George IV and Nash intended. In the tradition of George ... read more
