I have been watching too much TV. You can tell this, because I sat through a documentary about David Beckham playing football on every continent. It is Christmas though! Anyway, our David fulfilled his ambition of playing on Argentine soil - albeit in a charity match with a few kids. I was scanning the Northern League fixtures, having been frustrated by the postponements resulting from the continuous down pours of Christmas & Boxing Day and chanced upon the re-arrival of a Black Cat cult hero on the footballing scene. I wondered if Julio Arca would feel the same as Becks about turning out on the giddy heights of a piece of North Yorkshire turf, as he ran out with his new South Shields team mates at the Stokesley Sports Club. I decided to take a look. ... read more

Sunday 26 July - our next stop was Durham, where we arrived on a wet Sunday afternoon, although unlike home, there was no wind, so it wasn't a problem really. We had booked 2 nights at St Chads, which is a university hall of residence but becomes a Youth Hostel over the summer. It was right opposite Durham Cathedral, and just a stones throw from old Durham town. We had a huge room at the hostel and there was car parking 10 minutes away, so we could just leave the car there till it was time to move on. Durham was SO quiet and not at all touristy, which was a nice surprise, and in fact the whole of our time in the North it was like that, one of Britains best kept secrets? Durham is ... read more

6thMay Yarmouth – Hartlepool – 175nm Had a very early start – just getting light when we departed, down the long channel to the entrance of Yarmouth. Lucky it was a long way as I had to stow all the fenders, tyres and planks of wood to the side as we were going along. Just got it finished as we got out. Stunning scene with the sun rising behind a large wind farm. There are so many of them out here in the ocean, and actually they look quite pretty, I guess they’re generating so much power, but can’t imagine that they would EVER be put in..say between T.ville and Maggie Island!!! Good overnighter, lots of motoring unfortunately, but at least we’re heading north. I had a very busy watch as we went past a busy ... read more

We went to Europe. We won the cup twice! The Man in the Middle would have loved it. He could have started the singing. West Auckland went one better than the Trees mind and came back with the “World Cup”, as opposed to the Cup with Big Ears. The first “World Cup”, no less. West Auckland were aiming for something a little lower today, although the place in the FA Cup Qualifying Round at home to Blyth Spartans was no mean prize. The conditions were ideal for an FA Cup upset. A stiff breeze, a bright sun and a troublesome uneven pitch could aid their cause. Darlington 1883 would arrive as hot favourites, having left the Northern League behind them very swiftly for the giddy heights of EvoStick competition after their administration troubles. I parked up ... read more

This blog is about football, but it's such an extraordinary story that everybody should read it. Who won the first World Cup? Most people will answer Uruguay but they are wrong! The answer is actually West Auckland Football Club from County Durham, England. How do I know this? Well, when I was young I saw a film on TV called "A Captain's Tale" starring Dennis Waterman. I remember it clearly and ever since then it has stuck in the back of my mind, so we took a detour on our way to Glasgow to see what the place was like. I wasn't disappointed! Back in 1909, Sir Thomas Lipton (purveyor of fine tea!) thought it would be a jolly good idea to stage an international football competition in Turin. A local team was put together, and ... read more

Last summer I mentioned visiting Alnwick, the small city north of Newcastle with a famous castle that appeared in the first Harry Potter film. On my way back from Wooler, I stayed in a hostel in town for one night. I didn't do much, just read a book in their famously-gigantic bookstore and walked around the marketplace. Alnwick is definitely a good place to visit, especially the castle and the gardens, but one day is plenty of time. Still, the hostel is nice (apart from their 15 minutes of free wifi) and I'm glad I got to see the castle one last time, even if I didn't go in. The castle from the bridge behind the grounds. From Alnwick I took a train to Darlington, which is a town between Newcastle and Yo... read more

This years adventure is going to be a trip with my daughters, Amy and Emily. We are flying from Newcastle via Heathrow to JFK and then on to Orlando. We are staying at Hostel International NY for 3 nights and then flying to Orlando to stay with Amy's friend Elise for the rest of the holiday. Tonight we have sat and worked out an outline itinerary for our stay in New York. There are a number of places we would all like to see and others that one or another of us would like to see! The main things we have booked is a trip to 'The Top of The Rock' as the sun goes down over the city and a tour around the 9/11 Memorial. The rest we are going to wing! Had a traditional, full English breakfast this morning: egg, fried toast, tomato, mushrooms, sausage, and ham slices. Set me up for the day. Then left Durham with very overcast weather for Hadrian's Wall a bit farther North. After two short trains and a bus, I was dropped off in the nicely named town, Once Brewed (Twice Brewed is just down the road... not kidding) and began hiking up to the wall. This part of England, the true Borderlands with Scotland, is extremely beautiful. Rolling hills, lakes, farmland, and giant fields of flowers in bloom. Like walking around in paradise. The hiking, though, was less than heavenly, since it involved literally following the wall up and down the hills it traces. But the views were worth the effort, and there was something extremely rewarding walking along a ... read more

I left bright and early from Leeds, which really is a very cool city - it's very clean and modern and feels like maybe it's the yuppie capital of the North. Took a short train ride to York, my main destination for the day. This city really is the capital of Northern England and is absolutely jammed packed with history. Most people forget that this area was once the Northernmost extent of the Roman Empire, and York itself began as a garrison town. Then came the Vikings and then the Normans and finally Edward I moved his capital here in the 13th century - he actually started Parliament in the York Minster I visited today. The York Minster really is the whole reason I came to York. It's a massive, beautiful cathedral packed with history and ... read more

Geo: 54.7787, -1.55961Well after a couple busy days around Scotland the next few days to follow were relatively low key. Tuesday Natalie and I got dropped into Durham for a wander about. We walked home through the farmland between Newton Hall and Durham. We were out for dinner that night with Andrew and Anna Lise. The initial choice was Italian, but as they werent interested in serving us, we changed our plans to a Thai restaurant called Zen. It was a tasty, but expensive meal. With dregs of light still in the sky at 10.30, we walked back through the farmland.Wednesday, was a quiet one. Miserable weather meant our trip to the lake district wouldn't happen. Nat and I took a walk to a nearby pub for a cheap lunch. Two courses for 2 for 9£. ... read more
