Well we are in Devon, but not near enough to any town of any size to register on Travel Blog. And that’s fine by me. We are in Scoriton and that’s near Holne. We are the only guests in the pub and as Julie is still in the shower I’m the only patron in the bar. Told Kevin (when you are the only person here you’re on first name terms with the barman) that as the only patrons he will be able to spoil as rotten and that it will be good for me to be treated that way as I’m here to audition for the role of king. Was funny until I saw his condolence book that the pub has started! Not sure he’ll let me put a note in now! I’ll do my best ... read more

The luggage arrived, along with a £268 taxi account that you know who does not have to pay. Lucky girl Sarah for a while I was ready to sell you into the white slave trade. Then it’s hang out wet socks and jocks that have been zipped up in the case for the last 2 days. Not a pretty sight or smell. So as much wet and damp clothing as possible has been hung out to air and dry and apart from looking like a Chinese laundry all is fine and dandy again. The local bus to Totnes cost about £6, where is the Cornwall all day bus pass for £5 when you need it? It it got us there and back. Totnes Castle was closed for some obscure reason, not due to the death of ... read more

Totnes Castle. With flag flying proudly. Is that anti royalist sentiment tantamount to treason?

Too short a time to walk to Mt St Michael, too long a time to do nothing. It’s moving day here but it’s waiting time now. Just less than an hour until our train to Ivybridge departs so it’s typing time. Ivybridge will by necessity be washing and drying time. I probably had 6 or 7 pairs of socks in various degrees of unwasheredness and undriedness. Fortunately we are at the accommodation for 2 nights, tomorrow being a planned rest day. As such we should be able to make some arrangements to clean and dry things. Our boots particularly are wet, mine wet from the inside more so than the outside. I must get into the habit of wearing or at least taking my serious gaters. It’s water either from rain or undergrowth but it runs ... read more
Thanks for the welcome, but bye for now.
Just waiting for the train. Penzance to Ivybridge.

Big walk day. Plenty of elevation gain which is simply walking talk for lots of ups and downs. And about 20km again which when matched with the ups and downs is about right. Leaving at 9:00 sees us arrive just after 4:00 which is good. Not easy but good. The ups and downs correspond with streams or rivers meeting the sea so it’s all understandable and all geographically correct but it doesn’t make the walk easier! The track here is easy to follow as there is so little else around. A holiday park was our only detour and that was for icy-poles so we were happy about that. There were a few people on the track but significantly fewer than on the weekend. Those we saw were camping nearby and going for an ‘English walk’. We ... read more

We are not at Two Bridges, I don’t even know where it is, but I saw 2 Bridges today so that near enough. We’re in Westward Ho! It’s the only place name I know that really has an exclamation mark. I’ve used them for some ‘exclamable’ places before but this one has an official one. Dined at the Wayfarer Inn in Instow last night and I had some delightful mussels. The sauce was garlic, a little browned onion, some butter and slightly thickened probably with Devon cream and it was delicious. Also had some scallops that were sweet and pretty good but the mussels were a tough act to follow. Because we were so close to the sea Julie had some nachos! The pub is full of ‘kitch’ seafaring icons but it’s not coy or fake. ... read more

Well really near Bideford at a small seaside village called Instow. Very comfortable in our room at the Wayfarer Inn. A pub so old it does not have to try to be ‘olde worlde’, it just is. There are enough knots and rope splices on the walls here the place could be training central for Boy Scouts. Mix that with those old bronze diving helmets, model ships complete with rigging, porthole windows and any other maritime memorabilia that seems cliche and you’ve got it except the stuff here is real. The Cindy Lauper music is not exactly in keeping but sea shanties may be a bit over the top. The stairs here are super steep, I think in an effort to counter our easy day’s walk. For the first time there was booking mixup with the ... read more

Same sort of story as usual, lots of photos (Julie takes them as her camera has better resolution) and a bit of blog in an attempt to explain what’s happening. We are back in day 2 time, so we are walking from Combe Martin to Wollocombe through Ilfracombe. Due to a very tight BnB market our walking company arranges a return taxi for us so after slogging our way over 23 km with an elevation gain of about 850 m we were driven straight back again. Out of Combe Martin the path unsurprisingly goes up and up and along and down and up and along in the usual manner. The path meanders through a plethora of holiday parks, holiday camps and even some holiday ‘paddocks’ with some pretty primitive facilities but all seemed busy. It is ... read more

Brutal day but spectacular. Some (too many) very steep and quite long ascents meant the pace was pretty slow although surprisingly in line with the guide book recommendations. There’s an instant replay tomorrow with similar distances and similar ascents so this may be my final blog (PS Jake can have my golf clubs). Thank goodness for 2 pints of cider and a fish stew. Again there will be more photos than text but there haven’t been too many grumbles about that. Thanks Francis for getting us the our start at Lynton this morning. It was important that the luggage be dropped at a BnB address prior to 9 o’clock. That done Francis was again good enough to take us to the SWCP path. Our final chance to bail out was dismissed without thought, we had chocolate ... read more

Excess at Exeter - Piprey on wheels Exeter beckons me to its quay- far away from the maddening crowds of London. Being peak summer holiday season, I booked for a one night weekend stay instead of two. Devon and Cornwall have officially declared drought. Adapt and progress is the mantra of recession in England. Excitedly, I finished last minute packing like putting my toothbrush into the bag. I caught the local bus to Heathrow airport bus station and Flixbus coach to Exeter. In all the confusion, I noticed my local bus arriving late on the bus board. Hence, walked up to the other bus stop. Well in time but the panic was most unnecessary :) The coach driver ( Flix) stopped at Reading. I got off and explored a lovely fabric shop with a loads of ... read more
