Once, I read that you must leave a place while you are still fascinated by it...it's too late for me as, not only I got rid of the spell England once had over me, but I'm totally fed up of being here, to say it clear and simple...

But, after more than five years, I just don't feel right leaving full of questions about "what it could have been", so I have decided to give another chance to this country that, let's face it, has given me a lot of them, from learning a new language, to be able to live on my own all these years, to the fact that, it was in an english pub where I met the man of my life...

So, with a new attitude and the childish mentality of seeing everything with new eyes every day, I have decide to go for a "walk" and met the people who shape this country, to discover by myself if it's true that they do more things that drinking tea and warm beer...

We're going to Dartmouth, Devon; we've been trying to go to that part of the world for a while now, looking for pastries, sandy beaches and cliffs that tell you that that's the end of the known world and, if you want to venture further, you must do it at your own risk in seas rich in mermaids or giant squid...

I am so glad we went there, it changed my view on England completely!!!; not only because the houses are made of stone instead of brick, o because there are plenty of hills or sheeps, o because it looks like Galicia, my home land, but because the people...smile!!...when you walk the streets they say good morning to you with a big smile on their faces...it's been such a long time since that happened to me in the Uk that I had forgotten how it feels...

Dartmouth is reached by ferry, crossing the river. The houses are made of stone but colorfully painted which helps to create a happy atmosphere and, according to the locals, here is where you find the little English culture that is left in the Isles...that's what a very happy man (beer time!!) told us at the Cherub, a pub that claims to be located on the oldest building in town, from around 1380...full of character, not only because of the chimney, so big that I could fit inside, or because of the old staircase which mouned and complained under every feet, but because of the people who "inhabitated" the premises: no one seemed younger that 30 and all seemed to know each other...including the dogs!!!. Apparently, England is too cosmopolitan and there are (without any offenses to us) too many foreigners and that makes the English culture dissapear...few years ago, the few chinese or italians that came here, stayed in ghettos, but now we're everywhere and the English culture is isoleted to a few specific pionts of which, Devon is one of the best...


EN BUSCA DE LA CULTURA INGLESA


Una vez lei que se debe dejar un lugar mientras sigas bajo su encanto...es demasiado tarde para mi, ya que hace tiempo que no solo me deshice del encantamiento que una vez Inglaterra tuvo sobre mi, sino que estoy bastante harta de estar aqui, por decirlo clara y simplemente...

Pero, despues de mas de cinco años, no me siento bien marchandome llena de resignacion por lo que "pudo haber sido", asi que he decidido darle otra oportunidad a este pais el cual, al fin y al cabo, me ha dado muchas a mi, desde aprender un nuevo idioma, pasando por poder mantenerme a mi misma todos estos años, hasta llegar al hecho de que, fue en un pub ingles donde conoci al hombre de mi vida...

Asi que, con una nueva actitud y con la mentalidad infantil de intentar ver todo con ojos nuevos cada dia, he decidido ir a darme una vuelta a conocer a la gente que le da forma a este pais, a descubrir por mi misma si es verdad que hacen muchas mas cosas que beber te y cerveza templada...

Nos vamos a Dartmouth, Devon; llevabamos mucho tiempo queriendo ir a aquellas tierras del oeste, en busca de pastries, playas de arena y acantilados que te avisan de que ahi se acaba la tierra conocida y es a tu propio riesgo el adentrarte en mares llenos de sirenas o calamares gigantes...

Me alegro tanto de haber ido...me ha cambiado la opinion que tenia sobre Inglaterra totalmente!!!; no solo porque las casas son de piedra en lugar de ladrillo, o porque abunden las colinas y las ovejas, o porque se parezca a minha terra galega, sino porque la gente...¡¡sonrie!!...vas por la calle y te dan los buenos dias con una sonrisa bien amplia; hacia tanto tiempo que eso no me pasaba en Inglaterra que ya me habia olvidado de esa sensacion...

Para llegar a Dartmouth tienes que coger un ferry para cruzar el rio. Las casas son casi todas de piedra y estan pintadas de colores, lo cual les da un ambiente muy festivo y, segun cuentan los locales, es en esas tierras donde la poca cultura inglesa que queda existe todavia...eso nos contaba un hombre muy feliz (viva la cerveza!!) que conocimos en The Cherub, que reclama estar situado en el edificio mas antiguo de Detmouth, construido sobre 1380...es un pub lleno de caracter, tanto por la enorme chimenea, como por las escaleras forradas de moqueta hortera que se quejan y contorsionan bajo cada pie que se apoya en ellas, como (y sobre todo) por la gente que lo habitaba, nadie parecia menor de 30 y todos parecian conocerse, incluidos los 5 perros!!!!. Parece ser que Inglaterra es demasiado cosmopolita y que (sin querer ofendernos) hay demasiados extranjeros que hacen que la cultura inglesa desaparezca ya que, hace años, los pocos chinos o italianos que habia, formaban sus propios ghettos y se quedaban alli, pero ahora estamos por todas partes y la cultura inglesa se reduce a unos pocos puntos, de los cuales, Devon, es uno de los mejores ejemplos...
