Part VI 31st May - Wednesday Today, after a scrummy breakfast we were off to discover the Lake District. Howard had a quick motorway fix and then it was on to the C roads for the rest of the day. We had decided not to bother with the towns and concentrate on the vistas and see as much as we could in the time we had. Our route took us along Lake Windermere to Ambleside and over Wrynose Pass Wrynose Pass lies on a narrow, minor road that twists and turns from Little Langdale onward to Cockley Beck. Here, after plunging to Wrynose Bottom, the road forks. One arm leads south through Dunnerdale; the other fork connects with Hardknott Pass, where the road heads westward through Eskdale. Wrynose is part of the old Roman road named ... read more

We were suddenly blessed with a few unexpected days off work. As the weather was gorgeous at the time we decided not to waste it but to go camping in our favourite place, The Lake District. As usual we headed for Castlerigg, Keswick. The campsite we've been going to for the last 20 years or more. We spent the whole 4 days climbing the fells and relaxing at the campsite. The weather was perfect and as it was June we had daylight until almost eleven o clock each day so no worries about getting lost on the fells. The photos show the mountains we climbed.... read more

Coast to Coast Hike (10th-21st April, 2006) Just to give you a bit of background, the coast to coast walk (or C2C - Irish Sea to the North Sea) begins in St. Bees on the west coast of England and finishes in Robin Hood's Bay on the east coast. Covering 192 miles (306km), the walk passes through the Lakes District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. Alfred Wainwright completed the walk in 1972 and published his own route. Although there are maps of the trail there is no set path the entire way. There is scope for variations to be made to the walk and that is the way that Wainwright wanted it to be. He didn't want it to become a really well worn path like other walks in the area. There were ... read more

I got back from the Lake District of Northern England late on Sunday night after a dreadful 7 hour coach ride. We began our trip at 6:45am on Friday the 14th. We left Enfield (Katie, Stephanie, and still drunken me) at 6:45 am. Yes, I was up only because Katie called and got me up. When I left I couldn’t find my keys to my dorm but being still completely pissed I just left without them. We ventured by the overground rail to the underground to Nottinghill gate to get on a coach bus for 7 hours to head to Keswick (Cumbria) where we would be residing at GlaraMara Mountain. The drive to Glaramara was actually quite astounding. The country part of England is very beautiful. The rolling hills, green grass, grazing cattle and sheep, and ... read more

This morning I was awoken by a loud ray of bright sunshine glaring right thru my window. Someone forgot to close the curtains. Ah well, I was to be blessed with 2 days of sunshine in a row! From the Yorkshire Dales to the Lake District is but a mere hop skip & a jump! After another full English breakfast ( I love black pudding. Don’t wanna know how it’s made) I set off heading northwest. I arrived in the Lake District via the town of Windermere. As the forecast for the next day called for rain, I figured I’d better ride the famous Wrynose & Hardknott Passes today. The Lake District is arguably even more beautiful than the Yorkshire Dales & the four wheeled traffic attests to that! It kinda reminded me of western North ... read more

Once again, thank goodness, the weather forecast was wrong. No showers of any sort, light cloud and occasional gusty wind. We mainly walked along a limestone ridge, and Vince led. Andy took a day for paperwork, to my mind an odd decision in the midst of a week’s walking program. No problems, however. Vince does explain a lot more along the way than Andy or John, although as Catrina, a Parisian, remarked, “He is so talkative, sometimes he doesn’t notice no one is near him.”! The coach took us almost to Kendal , in the southern part of the Lake District, thus less mountainous and more open. We climbed to the top of the first escarpment, from where the most beautiful panorama of the central mountains opened out. The level 2 group has walked several of ... read more
