Hanno would usually plan out of town trips to make sure we don’t just stay in bed and get bored in our apartments during the weekends, and Cathryn had to be dragged along
(driving for us.aw!). They would usually take us out of Manchester on the weekends to show us how beautiful the rest of England is!
I’ve been hearing about Lake District from my colleagues who have been planning to go and from the people in the office who constantly warn us about its rainy weather.
Sheep … sheep … sheep more sheep and neatly trimmed country side grass. Driving around country side would always involve sheep and our amusement over the short grass. If you wonder why I’ve been mentioning about our amusement to it, is because in the Philippines, if you go to the country side, the grasses are quite tall and they definitely don’t look anything like those that we see when we are driving outside of Manchester. We’d curiously ask about why they are that short and Hanno would say that it maybe because of the sheep everywhere that keep on munching them. Hmmmmm ...
The Lake District Trip was one of my
favorites. The English country side always amazes me and provides that sort of "calming" thing, if you know what I mean.
We would randomly stop on the way to marvel on the beautiful views and to take photos of course.
We stayed at a backpacker’s inn in Windermere. We had a room with a couple of double bunks and shared baths - one on each floor. There wasn’t any cashier or a front desk person when we arrived. We were just given the door’s lock combination through email to get ourselves in, and the remaining payment was just to be placed in an envelope and is to be dropped in a safe. There were just posters around to tell us what to do. I haven't seen anything like this before. Cool ... cool.
After sorting everything out, Hanno drove us off to How Town for a little sight seeing and then to Hallin Fell for some hill climb, which led us to a very nice view of Ullswater when we reached the summit. Later on, we were back at Windermere to meet Hanno and Cathryn’s friends; a nice couple, Carl and Nicole for dinner and some drinks.
Ducks
How Town We went to dinner at Lucy 4’s - we had this really sweet chocolate fondue for dessert, then went pub hopping afterwards. I did a little drinking, we were lucky to find
(my first) Pimms at one of the pubs - Yaaay! It’s a summer drink so I was lucky to find one because it was already the start of autumn. After that, I had a few sip of
(bitter) beer and Bailey’s with milk
(as suggested by Cathryn). The milk does makes it taste a little better for an occassional drinker like me but still nothing beats Smirnoff ice!
The next day - nope, luckily there wasn’t any sort of hang over for me - until Monday! Part of Sunday was spent hiking around Tarn Hows under a rainy weather. It was a good one nevertheless and the view was quite nice and the sky would clear up a little bit at times.
Before heading back to Manchester we also went to visit another Lake District town Grasmere and bought my very first freshly baked ginger bread! I also got to know about the famous writer Beatrix Potter and her creation, Peter Rabbit. I always loved reading
children’s books! Where was I when Beatrix Potter introduced Peter Rabbit to the kids
(probably, I wasn’t born yet)? I didn’t know her until we came here, Glad to meet you Ms. Potter!
Lake District’s attempt to prove me wrong about its wet weather failed badly on the second day but thank you for not raining on us on the first day, thus, letting us enjoy our little hill climb.
As per Wikipedia: During the year, Lake District valleys typically experience 20 days with snow falling, a further 200 wet days, and 145 dry days.
That’s all for Lake District! Love xxx Tin
