Did Covid change the world ? Yes I think it did . Volunteers have dropped off volunteering since the pandemic. Many historical properties can no longer open their doors each and every week through the season. Some have closed for good as visitors stopped calling. Numbers have not returned to pre-pandemic levels . Perhaps we never should have shut down and just carried on. Things might have been very different . Today was one of those examples of places that were thriving pre- Covid but now is a pale shadow of its former self. We left Port Sunlight village after looking quickly at the museum . £16 entrance fee for both of us seemed a touch steep. We got into the car with no name and headed further up the Wirral. To our left the hills ... read more

It has finally reached the point of no return where we are starting to realise this is the last time we will be doing things for some time. The last time we will spend a whole day doing nothing. The last time we will have access to our own computer and room. The last time we will go to work (ok thats not such a bad one). For once Emma is being the optimist out of all of this and saying its soon going to be the first time we do lots of things as well. Whilst I like this it doesn't stop me being absolutely petrified that I am about to leave everything I am used to and start a prolonged period of time where for the first part and possibly more I will be ... read more

Wednesday 17th June to Friday July 3rd, 2009 I was excited, very excited. In fact the excitement that had steadily been increasing over the previous weeks had now got to the stage where I was fit to burst, not only because I was shortly going to see friends and family for the first time in over a year nor that I was about to spend a week of leisure in the golfing metropolis of southern Portugal but also for the fact that I was about to take a well earned break from the corporate world of eggs, fruit and veg and that I wasn't going to find myself sitting behind the wheel of a car on the 405 freeway for more than the next two weeks. Before the excitement could really be fully appreciated however I ... read more

Arrived in Manchester, UK on June 21, 2009. We took a direct red-eye flight from Vancouver to Manchester. W.. commented the dinner served on the flight was "the best food I've ever eaten". Two hours later he complained of a headache and said "this is the worst day in W.. history." Soon after, all that food he'd eaten came back up. It was a little messy, but a good thing we had a complete change of clothes in the carry-on baggage. N..'s aunt and uncle met us at the Manchester airport and drove us to N..'s cousin's house in Chester (Upton). We were all a tad bit jet-lagged. We went to a Greek restaurant to celebrate their daughter's 15th birthday.... read more

Another beautiful day =) I slept on Simons wonderful ready bed which is like a blow up with a sleeping bag attached. Woke up and chilled for a bit while Simon woke up, checked my email and what not. Then it was a big deal to get in a huge greasy breakfast so off we went. We needed to find a parking spot on a hill becuase of his starter motor. It was kinda funny took a couple extra mins but ha no worries. Walked over to this tiny cafe and ordered breakfast, and breakfast was breakfast eh no choices or nothing it was small med or large. Simon got the small which was kind of disappointing but nevertheless i ordered the large!!. The only real surprise on the plate was something called black pudding which ... read more

(N&P) Week 1 - Touched down back in Blighty on 3rd March, it felt a bit chilly after several months of baking heat. Family friends Breda and Sean opened their home to us for the first two nights back, feeding us with ham toasties, roast dinner and all things yummy, washed down with plentiful cups of tea! Ah, it was great to be back. Thence we went to stay in Paula’s sister Katie and her husband Goshi’s new abode in Langley, which was all lovely. We spent a leisurely time with them and Dad, great to see them after such a long while, although home is always home and already I had slipped into the familiar lull of being there that at times I had to think hard to remember we’d been away at all! Whilst ... read more

(N&P) - although punctuated by some great social occasions, our summer has mostly involved going through all the stuff that we brought up from Twickenham, sorting out photos from the last few years, and planning the next part of our travels. In Nick's case, a typical day generally began with watching Ironside kick some 70's butt (not literally), and Paula generally had her nose buried in some papers from the past few years from morn till night! Our celebrity moment was meeting Bill Bryson at Durham Uni's 175th anniversary celebrations, at the end of Summer in September, see right. Thurs 26th July to Weds 1st Aug - We spent the Friday, my first full day back from South America, filling in umpteen visa application forms to enable us to get into the less-open nations in the ... read more

Hello everyone! As everyone who has been in earshot of me in the last 3 months will know I am off to Oz for a year, and it has got scarily close now - I leave on Monday! I am still very very very excited but the nerves are kicking in a little now. I dreamt I got lost at the airport last night - not good! Today I am doing all the boring stuff like updating my CV, scanning documents and practice packing, again. This is why I thought I'd do a practice post here to see if everything works okay. Thanks again to everyone who has made my social calender so busy in the last 3 months. I have had 3 great official leaving nights out and countless meals, drinks and days out. ... read more

Well here's a turn up for the books, we are no longer in South America as the title may have given away. There are a number of reasons for our early departure from this part of the world but by far the dumbest is the simple fact that we failed to cancel an internal flight and the kind people at Lan airways took it upon themselves to cancel all of our onward flights including the incredibly overbooked leg from Santiago to Auckland. Long story short, we would have been stuck in South America for much longer than planned or budgeted for so we bailed. Having seen Macchu Pichu and countless other wonderous things I felt satisfied that we had made a decent fist of our first trip to South America. We couldn't afford the Galapagos and ... read more
