Switzerland's development stretches back to 1291, when a defensive alliance was formed among three cantons, forming the Swiss Confederation - which gained independence from the Roman Empire in 1499. As a result the Swiss population is formed from distinct linguistic groups, French, Italian, German and the traditional Romansch. It is common for Swiss residents to be multi-lingual.

Switzerland holds mountainous regions, with Jura in the north and the Alps in the south - famous for their ski slopes. The central plateau however holds rolling hills, great lakes and plains, creating a luscious green landscape during the summer months. Famous for it's rural mountain towns with their pine lodges and chalets, Switzerland also holds cities each with a unique character - from the vibrant and thriving, to the traditional and cultured.

As it turned out, we never made it to Switzerland on the day we planned. A baggage handler's strike left us stranded in Santorini (I can hear you all sighing with pity). I added a postscript to the last blog entry if you are wondering how on earth we managed to console ourselves with the devastating news. Anyway, two days later we found ourselves in Interlaken, the alpine playground of the Swiss. From there, we took an overnight train to Venice, then another overnight train to Nice, France, then a few trains along the cote d'zure and into Avignon, a bus [View Full Entry]

Continued from Florence As anyone who has traveled with Mike can tell you he was asleep moments after boarding the train. We were in a small coachette on the left side of the train, for the first part of our run. Something tells me mike road with his back to the direction we were traveling but that really doesn’t sound like him. I know I road facing our travel as I was FINALLY passing through that wonderful section of scenery between Florence and Bologna. This was the first time in about 18 months since I had passed this way and I [View Full Entry]

All is peace and love in this Paradise called Gimmelwald. Everywhere but at Helmut's. Helmut runs a hostel and a hotel there. I made a big blunder, allowing the tourism office at the Bern train station make a reservation for me, and they arranged things at Helmut's. I was told the hostel was full, so the reservation was at the more expensive hotel. So I am hiking from Murren to Gimmelwald, and the first thing I come to in Gimmelwald was home sweet home! The Mittaghorn hotel, run by Walter. Nothing fancy, but quaint as can be. Big beautiful cows, with [View Full Entry]
