After a wonderful stay last year, we returned to the Hotel Rugenpark in Interlaken with BK and CK. We were thrilled to see our buddy again! We spent the afternoon exploring town on a walking route suggested by our hostess. Then we returned to the wine bar, Benacus, for a terrific dinner. We were able to choose our own cheeses from their vast selection for our fantastic cheese plate appetizer. For the main course, J had venison, CK had lamb and BK had the "wildschwein" (wild boar). We are not vegetarians. Dessert was chocolate mousse with chilies.... read more

Interlaken reminded me of Boulder because it is right at the base of mountains -- except here there are cows in the middle town that are so cute! . It was so beautiful here and the best part is I got to go skydiving over the Swiss Alps! I have a video of the whole thing to which totally freaked my parents out... The people I met here were really cool too -- everyone was going skydiving or bungee jumping or ice climbing or something crazy -- almost all the people I met on other parts of my trip had been here and made friends with the same American girl that had moved there -- it really is a small world... ... read more

Geo: 46.3055, 6.18535Had a great sleep last night, despite waking up at 6:00 AM. I did wake up for a short while during the middle of the nigh,t but I still managed to get a decent number of hours of sleep. I lay in bed trying to sleep longer, but gave up at 8:15, or so. The hostel had a really great breakfast. Cheese, cold cuts, yogurt, cereal, and great bread. I ate with David and Melissa, a girl from Singapore that works in the TV industry. It sounds like she's traveled to some great places in Asia. It's a small world - after David left the hostel I got to talking with Stephen, the other bunkmate from Southeast Asia. He's also presenting at the computer science conference that David is presenting at. I told him ... read more

Geo: 46.488, 6.7898Bought some yogurt for breakfast - pomegranate - goooooooood! Almond yogurt - gooooooood! Off to the train station. Walked through a week-end market on the way. Too bad I had no time to browse - it looked pretty good. Grabbed a great sandwich for the train - chicken cutlet, served in an excellent, crisp cheese bun. Heavenly ... until I bit into the centre filled with curry sauce. Curry sauce seems to be a favourite in German regions. It actually wasn't that bad, but I prefer it without. Rode on a nice double-decker train with couches, tables, and sofas - positively luxurious! The Swiss countryside was bathed in fog today - it's funny because fog would normally dull its appearance. But today, it actually enhanced its beauty. Off to the French-speaking region of Switzerland. ... read more

Geo: 46.948, 7.44815My slow descent into insanity continues ... despite somehow going to the bathroom in the middle of the night and returning with both of my shower sandals, I woke to find only one of them. The other? It was nowhere to be found. This is getting to be too much ... it must be a conspiracy!!! They stole it from me .... the bastards .... I'll kill them all!!! Of course, I did dream about eating some really funky-smelling blue cheese ... maybe I ate the sandal?Crappy hostel breakfast - I expected more than instant coffee and muesli. I assumed incorrectly that the German influence in the region would mean that there would be a hearty breakfast with cheese and cold cuts. Wrong!!! It's a good thing that I ate my shower sandal last ... read more

Geo: 46.7243, 8.34036Had breakfast and then said goodbye to John and Nugget before going off to the train station. While I was there ... I saw the Sardinia lady! She was the one that was looking after her sister's B&B in Oristano. Small world - I guess she lives in Florence. She also recognized me, but we had that whole "I know you ... but I don't know from where" moment as she walked by in the train station. I managed to blurt out "Sardinia!" in Italian when I realized where she was from. Apparently, she works with Japanese people and thought I might have been one of her previous clients. Anyway, I thought it was a cool story.Didn't get enough sleep last night (this has been a theme for the past several evenings) and wanted ... read more

Unspunnen is a Swiss Festival that takes place every 12 years. This year was the 200 anniversary of the event. It began as a way to unite the various Cantons when Switzerland became a unified country. The festival runs for 3 days and includes a variety of activities. There are fantastic fireworks, flag throwing, Alphorn, and jodeling competitions, Swiss wrestling matches, stone tossing contests, and the costume parade. The stone tossing is called Unspunnen and is the major event of the weekend. There are various weight categories of stone thowing, but the Unsprunnen stone weighs 167 pounds!! The object is to see who can throw it more than 3 meters. Believe it or not, several men actually were able to do that. The costume parade displayed the traditional dress of all the Swiss cantons. It was ... read more

Run 26.2 miles up to Kleine Scheidegg!? It's killer just to walk it. But thousands of runners have done just that, each year, for the past 14 years. It was an amazing thing to watch. This year the race was held on Sept. 9 and it was a beautiful, sunny, cool day. Just perfect for a long race. We were at the start in Interlaken and watched as over 1000 runners passed us on their way to Bonnigen on Lake Brienz. From there they started the uphill climb to Wengen and continued on to Kleine Scheidegg. As for us, we caught the train up to the finish, had lunch, and positioned ourselves at the finish line in plenty of time to see the first arrivals. Most of the race follows a slow steady climb upwards to ... read more

If I could design the perfect place on earth it would be the Berner Oberland area, WITH NICE WEATHER! It has everything we dearly love: beautiful lakes, miles and miles of hiking trails, spectacular mountains, quaint villages with charming chalets, beautiful gardens, and delightful people. We love being there and this time we had the luxury of spending an entire month in the area. We usually stay in Interlaken and use their trains and the Swiss Pass to get around the area. Our chalet flat overlooked the Jungfrau and was near the park in the center of town. The location couldn't have been better. We also spent a week on the hillside overlooking Lake Brienz in the town of Ringgenburg. This is a beautiful little village about a half hour's walk from Interlaken. The walk runs ... read more
