To be fair, I only visited for a few hours and had a really horrible day. My Mom and I had one of our mother-daughter blow-ups and I decided to go to Zermatt alone. I really wish we both weren't so stubborn sometimes:(
Anywho, my Mom and I had the Flexi-Saver Swiss rail pass, which required that both travelers travel together at all times. Since I was taking the 3hr (each way) train ride alone, I thought I had to purchase a separate RT ticket for myself. I knew it would be expensive (as everything in Switzerland is expensive) and was willing to just suck it up. But the ticket booth attendant told me not to waste my money and just go ahead and use my existing rail pass, AWESOME!
The train ride is beautiful, and I not only missed my Mom, but I really wished Eric was there with me because if he was, we would had hiked up into the mountains and camped there.
Once you arrive in Zermatt, you have to walk along the main pedestrian drag (cars aren't allowed in Zermatt) before you can catch a glimpse of the Matterhorn. It is spectacular.
The rest of Zermatt is something else. Its like a Alpine outdoor mall, filled with souvenir shops from one end to the other. I got Mom about 20 magnets (a peace offering), and took the train back to Zurich. If I return to Zermatt, I would try to find a place as far away from the train station as possible.
