amazing powder in front of matterhorn! After the six month trip to South America it was important to get back to work and start earning some money again! What better than running a ski and snowboard course in Zermatt!
Ten weeks of fun in the snow with a bit of work thrown in is a perfect way to ease back into the working lifestyle! Well thats what Nick did anyway, I just came along for the ride for 6 weeks to be the cleaner, washer upper and ski bum extrodinaire!
Zermatt is great, a stunning old Swiss Alpine village set in a steep sided valley. The Matterhorn mountain towers over the village at one end and at 4478m looks pretty awe-inspiring on a blue sky day, apparently the infamous Toblerone bar's shape was based on the shape of the mountain!
In the 2 months that Nick has been here and the 5 weeks that I have been here we have enjoyed plenty of ski-ing, its pretty different to the ski-ing over in North America. We have skied over to Italy a few times which has been pretty cool.
We had a good time at a cheese-making demonstration the other week, a swiss lady
makes cheese everyday in her cellar room after her husband has milked the cows in the morning at 5.30am. We even saw their own personal cows that are kept in a very small old wooden house a few metres away from the cheese making factory. The demo lasted about 3 hours and we were quite surprised that in that time we saw the cheese go from milk to solid 'cottage cheese' that was strained into a circular mould. It would then take a further 2-3 months to ripen before being sold on.
Over the last week Nick's cousin Paul was out visiting which gave us a good excuse to go ski-ing loads, experience the apres ski and enjoy the restaurants. Luckily we had a dump of snow earlier this week that allowed us to explore the off piste ski-ing, we even hiked up a small slope to enjoy a fresh powder run that was lurveeeely!
On friday night we stopped off at the Hennu Stall, a mountain bar that is on the last run down to the resort. It was 3pm and we had had a good day so decided to have a few beers. This went on
for a while and as a band was playing we decided to stay until around 7pm and had a good dance. It was also pretty cool as Prince William and his mates were also at the same bar having a good boogie - a bit surreal to see him really but very exciting! We finished off the night having a lovely meal and then a few more beers at a local bar....needless to say that ski-ing was off the cards on the day after!
Well its my last week here and Nick has two more weeks, the sun is shining today and skies are blue, its not a bad life!
