After all the travelling Amy has done in the past year we had to think of something extra special for her first birthday. We think Amy likes hiking - her mum and dad certainly do - so what better place to choose than the Bernese Alps in Switzerland which are home to some of Europe's most famous mountains, including the Eiger. As you would expect in Switzerland almost everything ran to plan. The only exception was the weather. The cloud refused to budge for the first 2 days so we may as well have been in London for all we could see. We took Amy to Kleine Scheidigg and Eigergletscher on her birthday but encountered the type of cloud that you knew wasn't going to lift. However, the hotel did give us a lovely cake for ... read more

Switzerland - Wengen, July 8-11, 2014 Our good luck with the weather finally gave out as we awoke to heavy rain in Zermatt on the 8th, reinforcing our appreciation of the great views we had enjoyed. We had five legs of train travel to reach Wengen near the scenic attractions of the Jungfrau. Our plans for the day kept evolving in consideration of the wet weather. One intermediate stop was Interlaken, and on the spur of the moment we decided to visit Jungfrau park there instead of going directly to Wengen. There were convenient lockers large enough to hold our big suitcases at the station, so we could proceed relatively unencumbered. Also convenient was the fact that bus 103 to Jungfrau Park left right from the train station. With the Swiss Flexi Pass, bus tickets are ... read more

I was woken up by the sound of chirping birds outside my window. It sounded like the recorded one in Disneyland, but this one is for real. I draped myself in my jacket and walk to my 2-sides private balcony – it was so cold, colder than a fridge. Its twilight blue hour; where the sun almost rises but the moon is not gone yet; and the lights from the village are still twinkling. I’m in Wengen. Somewhere in the laps of Berner Oberland mountain terrain, Switzerland. Armed with a cup of warm choco, I sat there quietly – admiring the fact that I can see a thick cloud passing over the Lauterbrunnen valley down below. Gosh, I’m higher than the clouds. This place is so tranquil; yet it still has strong & stable wifi connection. ... read more

HIKING HEAVEN IN WENGEN, SWITERLAND Wengen www.mywengen.ch Summer travels this year took us back to the delightful, car-free village of Wengen in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. Situated high above the Lauterbrunnen valley, Wengen enjoys the most spectacular mountain views, including the emblematic Jungfrau massif. During the Summer season (May to October) Wengen is a hiker’s paradise with 500km of stunning mountain trails to explore. In Winter (December to April) Wengen becomes a thriving community to 10,000+ skiers, snowboarders, tobogganists, snow-shoe walkers and hikers. Wengen famously hosts the Lauberhorn Downhill Ski Race - the longest and most exciting on the world-cup circuit. Apart from some cloud settling around the mountains at a middle level, the day was fine so we walked down to Grund and got the cable car to Mannlichen. This is a longest cable way in Europe (not sure about the world). It takes 30 minutes to reach the top gliding over pastures, steep hills, forests and then high mountain pastures with many marmots. At the top is a 360 degree view of mountains towards Interlaken, to the east to Titless, then the mountains surrounding Grindelwald and the Lauterbrunnen valleys. It is spectacular and made all the more eerietoday by cloud swirling and lifting giving keyhole views over the valleys. From Mannlichen we walked the Panorama Trail to Kleine Scheidegg. This trail takes you face on to the Eiger with Grindelwald far in the distance below. ... read more

The weather has cleared and the Eiger, Monch, Jungfrau and Wetterhorn mountains are out again in all their splendour. It looked like a good day to walk from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg and down to Wengen, but, the track was closed. As the day wore on the mountains clouded over and the sun eventually disappeared. We instead, headed up to Grosse Scheidegg after lunch and walked to First which turned out to be all uphill. Being up high on the opposite side of the valley from the principal mountains is the best place to view them from. You are high enough to be on the same level as the glaciers and see just how much they have receded over the years. We remember taking the boys to the Upper Glacier and going into an ice cave. ... read more

Yesterday we ventured over to Interlaken once again, this time to take the Jungfraubahn up to Jungfrau mountain, the highest peak in Europe. Jungfrau is part of the three sister mountains - Jungfrau, Monch and Eiger. The peaks are known as the "Bernese Oberland" and were among the first high-altitude mountains in the Swiss Alps upon which man ever set foot. Monch is the highest of the peaks ... 13,475 feet above sea level. Up on the mountain is the Sphinx, 11,760 feet above sea level, where you can send the highest postcard in the world (unless you find a place to mail one up on K2 after moutainclimbing ... I doubt that is part of my life plan however!). Although Jungfrau is a tourist destination, there is a good deal of environmental research being done ... read more

This morning I woke up to the smell of pine trees, the birds chirping and the most stunning views of the snow-capped Swiss Alps. Today I'm in Wengen in south-west Switzerland. Most people on my tour have gone up 4000m to Jungfrau mountain but as it is -5° up there and I haven't brought a jacket with me on this trip, I decided to stay in the much more inviting 17° township. I have booked a 1hr masage at a beautiful wellness clinic here followed by an afternoon of sitting in the spas looking out the 360° views of the mountains. I can't wait! Yesterday we left the amazing Paris and it took 9hrs drive to get here eek! Paris was fabulous!! Spending only 1.5days there was not enough...the first night we arrived we did a ... read more

Well a busy and distinctly expensive month but has been a lot of fun. Will post more shortly but am gonna attempt to get some photos up that tell the tale! Ok... so due to breaking my camera (ok ok i dropped it down the loo!) I can't load pix on atm as my memory card does not appear to want to work right now. Shame but if you're on facebook, the photos are on there tagged by others. Moral of the story, do not let me near anything expensive. Tally of losses and breakages now is my wallet, my phone which i dropped on the floor and now my camera. Hoping it'll be like when i washed my phone in the washing machine and after a dry out it worked again after a week. So ... read more

Can't actually remember the last time i wrote... oh wait just checked. So you don't know about the Love Boat. Well me, Portia, Patrick and Plum decided we would go on this night boat called the Love Boat. Does as it says on the tin. Mostly just had a good laugh at the others on the boat and ogled the spare fit guys who were lacking. All in all though an amusing night and the photos show the drunkenness of the others. Since then we had two birthdays last week; Dawn and Patrick. So we organised a BBQ. I say we, I mean Kuoni did. Didn't quite go as planned but nm. Had a pretty good night afterwards. In the usual place. Unfortunately patrick was playing the concerned friend so didn't quite make it past ... read more
