I am actually back in Frnace now having just returned from our 3 day stint in Switzerland. Let me just say WOW. Switzerland is the most beautiful place by far. I made up their motto "Keep It Green Keep It Clean". They Recycle everything etc. and there is no rubbish anywhere and its just wow... green and lush. Before i get to that though i shall retrace my past week since Nice the first (im in Nice again for a night, just passing through). After our rainy day in Nice/ Monaco we hopped aboard the busabout bus and headed to our next destination which was Milan. We had been told there wasnt much to do. In the words of Lonely Planet "Milan is not good for budget travllers and does not lend itseld to idle wandering ... read more

Had our first real dissapointment for the trip today....we had to leave Lauterbrunen. We left Bern for Lauterbrunen about 5:20 last night and the drive from Bern to Lauterbruunen was where the real pretty stuff started. All the travel brouchers and pictures you see of Switzerland, they come from here. As soon as we got into Jungfrau camping ground we dumped our bags at the little cabin we were assigned and headed for a trek up to one of the waterfalls. Absolutley amazing, breathtaking, picturesque yadda yadda yadda you get the point, hopefully some of my photos come close to doing it justice, although i doubt it very much. The only thing that ruined it was the drunk bogan on the bus from Bern to Jungfrau. No wonder Aussies get a bad name on the traveling ... read more

Amber's Journal: Wow! This place is beautiful! We have absolutely loved our time here in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. It helped a lot that the weather was perfect today as well. We started our day by going to Trummelbach Falls. They are huge waterfalls inside the mountain. You go in and ride this giant elevator/funicular thing up into these caves. The water all comes from this huge glacier but it comes raging through these crevices in the mountain. It was pretty cool to see. From there we drove to Stechelburg and rode a gondola up to the town of Murren. From Murren we hiked up a ways, then down through the forest to some more waterfalls. It was called Sprutz Falls and you could walk behind them. It was pretty. Today was a fulfillment of a dream ... read more

Amber's Journal: Today was a fairly low-key day which was nice. We had a nice breakfast then lounged in beach chairs next to the lake. It was beautiful. After we checked out we drove to a place called Lauterbrunnen, a small town in the Swiss Alps near Interlaken. The drive was gorgeous! I was surprised to see that the Swiss Alps look very much like our own Rocky Mountains. The only major differences are the large green valleys and small villages built into the steep hillsides. They even farm the steep hillsides, many of them by hand. We passed at least 40 waterfalls on the drive today. I love waterfalls so I got excited every time I saw one. Oh, and another difference is the huge (HUGE!) gorgeous lakes they have in the mountains here and ... read more

Our only stop in Switzerland was Lauterbrunnen , a cold little town nestled in between two steep mountains in the Alps. It seems that there is a waterfall every 50m in Switzerland, it is ridiculous how much water they have. There were actually rapids flowing through the stream in our camp! It was so cold that pretty much all of us upgraded to cabins, I was especially keen after already spending 3 months living in a tent! That night was our first major party night when we had a ‘Bright and Tight’ party in a bar called the bomb shelter, and yes it was a bomb shelter. We got a little boozed that night… The next day we took the cog railway up the mountain to Jung Frau, where it was snowing HEAVILY!! We had our ... read more

Jungfrau Mountain Jungfrau mountain is the highest mountain in Europe sitting at about 4,158 metres. Even though it's nearly the end of summer, due to the altitude there's still snow on the mountain. It was 2.5 degrees when we were up there. We caught the train up to the mountain which is about a 2 hour ride. I've got a photo of me doing the matrix in the train which is made possible as the tracks are on a 25% gradient tilted. Sadly, people are lousy at taking photos so it didn't come out as well as I would've liked. Due to the altitude, the lid of my Pringle's container popped off which was pretty cool. Unfortunately I didn't get to see it as it was in my bag, but when we were going up on ... read more

Road to Switzerland Four days left of tour. We've got some long drives ahead of us starting with today which will be about 12 hours. The drive is from Florence to Lauterbrunnen. Switzerland is fucking beautiful. Lakes, rivers, old mountains, lots of green grass, trees and snow in some areas. I think it's actually more beautiful then Austria, which is hard to beat. To put it into perspective, think of being present at a badass castle. You've got a deck chair and beer in your hand. You're about to witness Pairs Hilton get be-headed. All you can do is sit there, sigh and think "Man, this rules." Lucerne On the way to Lauterbrunnen, we stopped off at Lucerne. The city, like the scenery in Switzerland is beautiful. Clean, wicked scenery, full of attractive people and some ... read more

At the end of my last update I was in Innsbruck (in Austria) awaiting the delivery of my new mastercard, which I hadn't expected to receive until the following afternoon (monday 25th August) meaning I wouldn't have time to make it to Switzerland before dark. Thankfully though when I checked out of my hostel - just as reception was about to close for five hours - my card had already arrived, so I headed straight to the train station and jumped on the first available train to Zurich, four hours to the west. And so after having to change from the train to a bus and then back to another train (for what reason I have no idea) to get out of Austria, and travelling through the tiny little country of Liechtenstein (which took a grand ... read more

Thursday, 14 August Our first big travel day. We boarded the bus early to drive to Lauterbruen, Switzerland. The method to make it a quick journey was to sleep on the bus. I wasn't that tired at this point of the trip, so I actually got to see some of the French countryside. There were some amazing castles on the way. As soon as we passed the Swiss boarder the fun began with a Champaign party on the bus. I was a little annoyed, as it was this time that I started to feel a bit crook. But I pushed on and had a bit to drink (nothing compared to my normal Champaign standards). It was definitely the way to get everyone chatting and in the mood. In no time we were at the campsite, and ... read more

We were up early again ready to take the train up the Jungfrau mountain. We walked through the village and arrived around 30min early so we decided to have a quick look around the small town. A few of us searched for the Swiss army knife shop and had a quick look before it was time to head back and get the train. We jumped aboard and slowly began climbing up the massive mountain. The views on the way up were breathtaking, it was hard to believe I was actually seeing these beautiful snow top mountains. We made our first stop at a small village where we changed trains and once again slowly headed to the top. The landscape got better and better it was an incredible sight. As we ascended the Jungfrau I took some ... read more
