1:35 p.m. (American Time) The town of Lugano is gorgeous! On the drive into town we went through a large mountain tunnel. The grass on the side going in was green, but the other side was all white and snowy. It was beautiful. The town's we passed looked like they should have been in "The Sound of Music." Lugano looks like a movie set. I can't believe people live here! The streets are brick/cobblestone in the heart of downtown and there are little fruit/vegetable stands and vendors who sell prepared foods and bread. Amazing. Later that day... We went grocery shopping today. They're so cute. I bought some form of cheese (gruyere, I believe?) and it was delicious. We went to lunch/breakfast at this place called COOP. It was me, Michelle, Jackie, Liz, Brittany and Monica. ... read more

i just wanted to thank you all for being so sweet in my time of panic and depression. i am very happy to report that it has passed and tonight i had a super fun time! we took brinberg's dinner suggestion and walked a mile and a half in the rain (literally) to this fondue restauraunt. he just told me and this girl allie but somehow when it was time to go we had like 15 people wanting to go! so we all trucked up and the hill and we hardly knew where we were going but somehow we found it. when we rolled up they said we would have to wait an hour so half the people turned back but half stayed and we were seated immediately. somehow i was the only one at our ... read more

The plane ride was quite long (8 hours) and I was worried because I don’t sleep well on planes but with a plane full of students it wasn’t bad at all because we just sat around and talked and watched movies the whole time- barely anyone slept on the plane (which made it for a rough first 48 hours). When we arrived in Zurich it was beautiful. The weather was cold but not too bad. (I attached a picture of the Alps that I took from the bus ride) We took a 3 hour bus ride from Zurich to Lugano and when our bus arrived at the Montarina (the place we are staying) we looked out the window and our professor pointed to the huge hill in front of us and said, we are staying ... read more

The bus drive over was gorgeous and very pretty. The Alps are very pretty. Lots of snow. I saw snow on palm trees. Never thought I'd see that. I didn't even know they had palm trees in Switzerland. Interesting. Very sleepy. When we arrived we had to lug our suitcases up 2 flights of stairs. One of mine weighed 60-something lbs. Not fun. We then went on a short walk around the city and went by school. Still don't really know how to get there but I guess I'll figure it out. We found our own way home. On the way we had our first alcoholic beverage legally. lol. I just had a glass of merlot. It was okay. They give you snacks when you drink here. Good idea. Keeps people from getting schwasted. Must sleep. ... read more

I made it! I just got back from a walk with the group downtown... lugano is so pretty! its a lot bigger then i thought it was and i swear it looks just like disney land or something! I've just been bouncing inbetween talking to people, i'm trying really hard to be nice and put myself out there but its been a little hard since i am beside myself with tiredness. We landed in Zurich at 7:55. It was cute because when we landed the pilot gave the score of the orange bowl since he knew so many tech fans were on the plane! Then i got my luggage all by myself (with a little help from a push cart) and loaded it onto the bus. I was planning on sleeping on the bus since i ... read more

We decided to give ourselves a break and stop for the night in Lugano on the way back to Zurich. We enjoyed our visit to Alba so much that we ran out of daylight to make it back (and in truth, weren't quite ready for our magical journey to end). It took a bit of work, but we found a room right on the lake for a decent price (breakfast included) and headed out for dinner. J's well proven technique for late night hotel negotiation is a shrug and "Is that the best you can do?", once the first price is given. Nearly without fail or regards to language this will yield a price drop. As you may recall, we visited Lugano last year () and part of the main square was under construction so we ... read more

Homes Around the WorldAlexandra RoosenburgWelcome! With my travel adventures continuing, and my monthly mass-email growing more and more massive each year, and thereby more and more impersonal, I have decided to takes steps to ensure that everybody stays included and updated on my life's adventures. Here I am in my last month living in Switzerland. It has been a wonderful two year journey, full of ups and downs, many travels, new friends, and professional growth. I will be the most sad about having to leave my 6th graders behind, as they embark on their new journey in middle school. Now, I know that they are moving up and across the street, and it won't necessarily be a huge deal that I'm not teaching in the elementary school anymore, but judging from the start of this year ... read more

Wknd #2: Lugano, Switzerland! No matter how much fun it is to live and work in the city, I always come back to my Maine roots in the end... I love the mountains and the lake and air that smells fresh. For these reasons, I absolutely adored my time in Lugano. That, and also my sweet (and handsome for all you single ladies!) host, Constantin. Constantin is from Germany and was an exchange student in my home town. Although I was in college at that time, he became close friends with my brother. He's studying economics and business and is abroad in Lugano (1 hour from Milan by train) this past semester. Because everyone finished exams the day before I arrived, everyone was still in the mood to party. Sooooo, have a perfect meal of pizza ... read more
