Blog -- August 1 A National Holiday Today is Switzerland’s national holiday; we will probably fall asleep to the sound of fireworks because tonight we are camping in the country’s oldest city, Chur (pronounced Core). Speaking of pronunciation, we are now in German-speaking Switzerland. I have some understanding of both Spanish and French, but no German. I’ve tried, but it just does not come to me. I apologize to all those with whom we struggle to communicate over the next three weeks. Leaving Disentis this morning, we quickly found ourselves on another narrowing mountain bike trail. Though the scenery was beautiful, our bodies and bikes are just not made for off road single track through the forest. We saw few other touring cyclists on the trail though we did leap frog with one young man on ... read more
Hello Blog readers, We are back from our day trip to Chur, Switzerland to visit Gloria's cousins Anita and Gaby. It was a pleasant journey with only one train change in Basel. Basel is a city that incorporates 3 countries. France, Switzerland and Germany so you have to depart the French train, walk through the Zoll ( border crossing) because Switzerland is not in the "European Union" and board a Swiss train (10 minute walk) It didn't start out to well as we needed to be at the station here in France at 7:25 AM. We were there in enough time only to be told that there were track construction and the train connection would "NOT BE POSSIBLE" as they say. But we could catch the 7:02 train. So we run to the platform where we ... read more

(Off the beaten path? The town we were living in isn't even an option on the list, so I put Chur instead. The town we were living in is called Igis. And apologies but the 't' button is messed on this computer..just a warning) In Switzerland we became removed. No moblie phones, internet and more or less, just the three of us that spoke english. IOt was almost therapeutic in a sense- being in some tiny, Swiss town you could barely properly pronounce the name of, where nobody could find you if they wanted to. Everyone only knew that you were now gone into the abyss of travel and woul dhave only their imagination of what adventures and situations were befalling you each day. I could feel the weariness pulling at the edges of me now. ... read more
Thursday 12 mars The best view from a breakfast room so far! All by our selves as usual. We left Rothenburg and planned our next stop to Chur in Switzerland. We checked the net and found a couple of hotels there which seemed okay (which means not TOO expensive for a swiss place). Now we were heading for the Alps! It was fascinating to see the changing landscape along the road. When we got to Chur, it turned out to be a quite large, busy and utterly ugly place with strip malls, junkies and abandoned houses. A crowded city where it seemed to be impossible to leave the car with the luggage in a safe place. We decided to drive a little bit further, and left the highway when it said: “Thusis”. Our dear friend “Gullan”, ... read more

Hallo hallo! I just got back from a weekend holiday of skiing in the Alps! My broken computer has been debilitating to say the least, my fingers are crossed that I can get it fixed this week-- and then I will finally be able to upload my amazing pictures from Venice, Vienna, Budapest, Prague. So skiing in the Alps was a bit different than skiing in the States. First of all, the only people I saw falling were my friends. Even the smallest children looked as though they learned to ski around the same time they learned to walk. We had a really fun time though; I forgive my friends for exaggerating their skiing skills. All I can say is thank god we didn’t rent a place that was ski to door-- something we seriously did ... read more
Well, as I write this, Nick and I are held up in our two-man dome tent listening to the pounding rain, wind and thunder. The day started off great, not to say that it’s ending bad, it’s just another experience. We started off our day by having a free breakfast at the hostel. We were the first ones down to the dining area because our jet lag wouldn’t let us sleep any longer. Oddly enough, there were two other Americans sharing the room with us. After breakfast, we headed out to see the few sight in Zurich. It took us longer to find where we parked our car then it did to see the sights. But that was good; we got to see a lot of the city by foot. After finding our car, we ... read more
