I'm not even going to try to add photos. Just wait until Wednesday or Thursday. This will probably be my last update from Europe. Crazy! It's gone by so fast! Keep checking back here though, because I'll do my best to add a bunch of stuff once I'm back in Calgary, like detailed maps, more photos, and other fun stuff. Thursday last week started off sunny, so I headed out for one more hike from Zermatt while I could. The direction I chose reminded me that as much as I love skiing, ski areas are really ugly in the summer. Muddy roads everywhere, big metal towers, chair lifts, power lines, and so forth. I still had a good day, but it was a little less pleasant than some of my other hikes. Friday it rained all ... read more

So having arrived in Bern, I awoke to my shoebox-sized two-bed dorm on saturday morning (30th August), and immediately ventured into town for a good look around and some much-needed breakfast. Having missed the eleven o'clock guided tour of the parliament building, then spent half-an-hour wandering around the main train station looking for the tourist office, before ultimately deciding not to even bother checking out either of the two museums I had hoped to visit because they were each charging eighteen Swiss Francs (roughly the same amount as in Australian dollars) for admission; I ended up heading back to the parliament building just in time for the two o'clock guided tour - which was not only free, but also, despite the national council chamber being closed to the public due to renovations, very impressive. My next ... read more

Well, yesterday we went for a really lovely walk for 2 1/2 hours. (yep, we actually walked that long - US!!!) It was really scenic and surrounded by mountains and waterfalls. Then we were told that the van would be ready for collection in France at 4.00 so we set off lunchtime and got to the garage with 1/2 hour spare. BAD NEWS AGAIN.....they had ordered the wrong starter motor so it hadn´t been done. All that driving for nothing. We got a few bits we needed out of the van and, as it was raining in France we decided to head back to Switzerland and find another place to stay. This morning we are doing some well needed laundry and whilst the washing is being done, we're having a hot chocolate and checking emails. The ... read more

Well, by Friday, we'd had quite enough of France so we decided to drive down to Switzerland in the hire car for the day! WOW!!!! Berne was lovely (the old town) and then we went onto Interlaken - amazing! Long drive there and back but well worth it. AA called to say the van was getting a new starter Motor on Monday so we decided to leave France for the weekend and find a place to stay in Interlaken. Saturday - check out of France and go back to Switzerland. Stayed in a lovely hotel called Silberhorn which looks so pretty. Interlaken area is spectacular!!!! Surrounded by the Alps and 72 Waterfalls, the place we stayed was in Lauterbrunnen. Never have I ever seen a place like it. Today we went up Mount Jungfrau in a ... read more

We spent two nights in Bern, the capital city of Switzerland. The city is a World Heritage Site because of its preservation. The city centre is actually really cool, it has a canal (now covered) running under the main street. The main clock tower is pretty nice as well. But my highlight was the discovery of the existence of the Einstein Museum. I originally thought there only thing Einstein was his Apartment, but the Museum is holding a very in depth Einstein exhibit. After the exhibit we went outside to see the jousting and sword fighting that was taking place. ... read more

June 21, 22, 2008 Bern / Interlaken, Switzerland Our first day in Bern was Sunday. A perfect day to visit downtown and all the shops. They are nearly all closed on Sundays !!! We did a good walk about the old city center and visited the park where they keep the city mascots, bears. Bern is a very nice city. Not a lot of real touristy things to do in the city but a very nice old city that has been well restored and maintained. Bern sits on the edge of The Alps with some very nice views of the mountains and typical “Post Card” scenery. A short drive from Bern is Interlaken, a small city right in the mountains. We enjoyed a ride on a very new funicular, on a very old track ( over ... read more

Wir waren baff - ... read more

Friday the 13th, on the train from Paris in car number 13 departing at 13:00. Despite the bad omen, the train ride was beautiful and pleasent, riding through the French and Swiss countryside, up in 1st class (no class to the back). Upon arriving we were greated by 300,000 dutch people dressed in orange, aka Holland/Netherlands. Unknowingly we arrived to a host city for the Eurocup and Holland came to represent for that nights game, Holland vs. France. Marcs high school friend/exchange student met us in Berne and led us to the center of town where 4 huge screens, plus every store with its own outdoor tv and chairs, were set up for a public viewing to accomidate the 300000+ Dutch, French, and Swiss people, and the 2 Americans. We also met up with Carlas boyfriend, ... read more
