I am alive and well. Long time no hear. And thus the trend continues, that I shall bad mouth a town-city as soon as I arrive in it. Basel. It's big, it's expensive. Good thing I have ditched the habit of converting everything into Polish zlotys. Today I had a drink that came in a bottle, approx 3 dl -- wasn't freshly squeezed, wasn't some exotic berry, wasn't even organic, for 4.50 Francs. That comes out to about 4 bucks. That's like 15 zlotys! (ok, I did the conversion just this one time) And it wasnt even in the airport! I pretty much have to take out a mortage to eat a decent meal in this town. Grüezi!! Qué tal os va por ahí? Yo sigo aquí dándolo todo...y ya por fin bicicletizado. He ido esta mañana al Flohmarkt de Petersplatz y he encontrado una buena bici por muy buen precio...igual hasta me aficiono a hacer pequeñas incursiones en la tranquila geografía suiza. Esta semana tampoco hemos parado, entre unas cosas y otras al final todos los días se hace algo; como aquí todo el mundo está un pocode prestado, pues siempre hay alguien dispuesto a tomarse unas cañas, a ir a comer al río (está haciendo un tiempo estupendo, ahora debemos tener unos 25 grados...). El jueves nos fuimos un nutrido grupo del estudio a una conferencia de Jacques Herzog a Zúrich; y después de bastante autocomplacencia y qué-buenos-somos acabamos en el lago tomando cerveza y unas salchichas. Buenas noches a todos desde basilea!! Sigo vivo y coleando; y bastante contento con todo lo que me sucede. Aunque hay una relativa calma y un ambiente de trabajo improtante, no me he librado de salir a tomar cervezas. Es curioso porque al lado del estudio -arquitectos: véase detalle de la puerta- y en la orilla del Rhin hay un bar que se puede considerar una parte más del estudio; siempre que vas te encuentras a alguien. Se llama Cargo Bar, y yo ya me he sacado el abono de temporada!! Incluso, no os lo creeréis, pero esta semana he salido lunes y jueves... que no decaiga. Como podéis ver, ya me he amuelado convenientemente la habitación, después de la tercera visita a Ikea. Creo que ya lo tengo casi todo a punto. Sólo me falta ... read more

Hola a todos de nuevo!! Aquí estoy sano y salvo y con un flamante (aunque un poco exiguo) nuevo mobilario (patrocinado por IKEA). La única pega es que aún me duelen los pulgares de poner tornillos... eso sí, ya soy un experto en montajes y desmontajes varios (lo de los desmontajes porque no siempre sale bien a la primera...). Bien, bien. Ara que ya estoy instalado y que dentro de un rato me iré (como quien dice) a hacer la compra a Alemania, aprovecho para iniciaros en el maravilloso mundo basilisco. De momento va todo sobre ruedas. Empezando por el principio, el estudio es increíble. After getting a good dose of sun on the lake cruise in Lucerne we arrived in the architectural Mecca that is Basel. After some rest we woke to three inches of snow falling in flakes so big you could build an igloo. So with the memories of our previous days sunshine disappearing we donned our cold weather gear and headed off for the German border to the Vitra Design Museum. Now last time I was here it was all sunshine and green grass, not the case this time as it was a winter wonderland of architectural classics. I didn't think Gehry's Museum could get any whiter. Hola a tod@s!! Por fin en Basilea...hace ya tiempo que sabía que me venía, por fin llegó el momento, y tras un breve viaje, aquí estoy. Aún acostumbrándome a la nueva vida. De entrada, la casa y el barrio están muy bien, pero no tengo nada de nada...ni muebles, ni cama, ni armario...es bastante curioso. Así que me toca dormir en el suelo un par de días hasta que asalte el IKEA más cercano (cosa que haré mañana, d.m.). Ayer fui a ver el Madrid-Barça a un bar, bastante poblado de ejemplares hispánicos, con gente del estudio que me presentó Key; es bastante curiosa la mezcla que se da, al final no sabes en que idioma estás hablando porque con cada persona hablas uno diferente; con los portugueses en español, con los suizos en alemán, con ... read more

OK since we've returned from South Africa, we are back in the winter zone of Basel, but now it's the beginning of the end of winter, because Fasnacht is upon us. Running annually since perhaps the 11th century, Fasnacht is the beginning of the fasting season of lent (although the Swiss are primarily non-Catholic). The festival, which begins the Monday after Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is marked by music, merriment, food, drink, and amazing costumes. It always begins with the "Morgenstraich" Monday at 4 am, when all the lights in the city are turned off; the huge illuminated lanterns accompanied by loud marching bands begin promenading through the narrow streets of downtown Basel, for 72 straight hours. Greetings, I'm back from Basel for nearly two weeks now. Usually I would have blogged live from the event itself, but the reality of shooting with three cameras slowed me down. The event started on Friday 13th January, but we arrived early on Thursday 12th in the morning, bleary-eyed after the long overnight flight from South Africa to case the joint, as we knew things wouldn't let up once it started rolling. We weren't wrong. The rooms at the Swisshotel Plaza in Basel are really nice. My room has a huge circular window which looked down onto the square. In the room opposite is Jonathan Ott, and four rooms down are the Shulgins. Getting into the lift with a whole lot of people who are urban legends makes for exciting moments, something the Symposium is full ... read more
