Background: The Swiss Confederation was founded in 1291 as a defensive alliance among three cantons. In succeeding years, other localities joined the original three. The Swiss Confederation secured its independence from the Holy Roman Empire in 1499. Switzerland's sovreignty and neutrality have long been honored by the major European powers, and the country was not involved in either of the two World Wars. The political and economic integration of Europe over the past half century, as well as Switzerland's role in many UN and international organizations, has strengthened Switzerland's ties with its neighbors. However, the country did not officially become a UN member until 2002. Switzerland remains active in many UN and international organizations, but retains a strong commitment to neutrality.

Haus of Tolsty

 Europe » Switzerland » North-East » Zürich
After our quick change of plans, we diverted to Zurich this evening in lieu of St. Moritz. Chizzy and Bryan were very gracious in accomodating us a day early. We met Tolsty the cat. The only picture we have of him is blurry, which should tell you something. The other pictures from this evening are my experiments with tripod and long exposure... [View Full Entry]

it was such a beautiful day.
i'm in an internet cafe in zurich right now. this is quickly becoming one of my favorite cities in the world. besides the fact that everything here is so exhorbitantly expensive, it's pretty wonderful- very charming, beautiful, and clean. no wonder my mother lived here herself. today, some guy tried to greet me in mandarin. that was pretty funny. we walked around a lot, i ate a lot of candy, and spent more money than i intended to... damn credit card traps. we had a great fondue dinner and sat in some swanky cafe and my cousin told me more stories [View Full Entry]

The Langoliers

 Europe » Switzerland » North-East » Zürich
Anyone out there a Stephen King fan? Then you should know his piece “The Langoliers”, which also made it to the big screen. For those of you who don’t: Big airplane with destination somewhere on the US mainland. All of a sudden most of the people on the flight have vanished, with a few “lucky” ones left to their destiny. Manage to land the plane on some mysteriously abandoned airport surrounded by mountains (probably somewhere in Maine, considering it’s Stephen King…). No people, no communications, no other planes, not even any smells or sounds on the [View Full Entry]

My trip along the Silk Road begins oddly enough in Switzerland - and why not! I visited a very good friend from a previous trip to Central America some three years ago. I stayed for almost a week in Zurich, and it was great. Zurich feels like a northern city with Southern influences, and despite the fact that there are approx. 30% foreign workers, their influence on the city was to me surprisingly little, compared to other cities with much lower immigrant ratios. A small compact and beautiful city with a sense of tradition, built in some part on banking history. [View Full Entry]
