With our last long weekend ahead, we decided to take Friday afternoon and Tuesday as holidays to extend it even further. We hit the road for Zurich on Friday arvo. Saturday moring in Zurich was spent at an awesome flea market and the afternoon somehow vanished attending the ExpoVina. ExpoVina comprised 12 boats moored together and hundreds, maybe a couple of thousand wines available for tasting. You paid a one-off entry fee and walked from boat to boat, each with at least two levels and probably 10 or more different "booths" set up for each vineyard or region. You received a taste of anything you wanted. And boy, did those "tastes" add up!!
At the Aussie booth, where we wanted to try some wines that were selling for about 40-60 Euros a bottle, we chatted to some Swiss gals who had been to Tasmania for their post grad degrees and were having a mini reunion. They gave us some tips to consider for our journey to Friedrichshafen the next day, namely go via Lucerne and check out Mount Rigi.
We followed their advice and took a boat trip from Lucerne to Vitznau, then a steep train up Mt Rigi, cable car
back down Mt Rigi to Weggis. Then the boat trip back to Lucerne. All surrounded by magnificent mountains. It ranked right up there with Nepal for beauty!!
We continued on to Friedrichshafen as Marty had booked a ZEPELLIN ride as a birthday present on the Monday!! Alas, the weather was very crappy, so they had to cancel it... Luckily we also had Tuesday as an option... But even more disappointing, the day started out better than Monday, but the organisers decided it still wasn't suitable. However, during the time we would have been in the air, the weather had cleared and was absolutely perfect... It just wasn't meant to be.
So, we consoled ourselves by visiting the Zepellin museum, which was pretty cool as they had a life size model of one there and heaps of info on their history and construction. Poor Marty then had a tough drive home in dark, rainy conditions with roadworks and cars zooming by at around 170/180kmh... not at all like the beautiful autumnal vistas we had experienced the rest of the weekend!!
