Map Notes:

What can I say? - we love Switzerland!
Switzerland has fantastic long distance cycle trails, and they don’t all involve climbing the alps. You don’t even need a map as all the routes are way-marked and take you to amazing places, into the forest, up by waterfalls, nature reserves, lakes with reed beds or enticing clear water, mountain views, quintessential farm chalets, crop fields, needle top spire churches and of course, cows with bells!

Our average daily distance has gone significantly down, partly due to more challenging terrain and unsealed roads, partly due to there being so many nice places to stop and admire the scenery, and there really seems no need to hurry.

Having crossed so easily into Switzerland, we did get a bit of a shock on the Brunig pass at 1008m between Interlaken and Lucerne which was basically a 10 percent gradient for a few kilometres to the top. Having struggled over it in 30 degree heat which we did not expect in Switzerland we met a couple (Bruno and Veronica) who were riding a tandem and towing a trailer with 1 year old Merrick on board. They were headed for the very same pass (Merrick’s first pass). I have nothing but admiration for them! See photo below!

And the Big Bonkers Bicycle Bonanza!
We are 2 kiwis leaving London and embarking on a long and meandering ride home. It is more than 12 000 miles! We are not athletes, just ordinary people who like to pass through countries rather than passing over them, meeting the people, experiencing the nature and the life. We will travel by bicycle, boat, and train. We hope to make it at least half way without taking a plane. Some background from Nigel Introduction: If asked I'd find it hard to pin point how my interest in cycling began. It certainly wouldn't have been my first cycling memory, as a five year old getting my little ... full info

Nig is looking decidedly gypsy like, note the socks hanging off. (the umbrella is actually intended to stop the rain coming in our tent - and maybe sometimes the sun!)
