So not knowing where to go is a bit of a conundrum and life is hard for us who can’t make up our minds. After som very unserious planning I had two alternatives, The Ardennes or the Carpathians. But luckily I could postpone my decision until i got to Germany, right to the Ardennes or left to the Carpathians. The last and final moment came at a T-junction, luckily the was a traffic light so I could, like the donkey with the two hay bales, shilly- shally for a few seconds more, in the end the left side won. I set forth to go south with an overconfident goal , well i could have made it but suddenly I got up to 29C so I ended up taking a hotel in Prenzlau, out of energy. Black ... read more

This morning we left the excitement of Stockholm to head north to the quieter, more rural landscape of northern Sweden. We thoroughly enjoyed Stockholm and could easily spend a few more days wandering about. But this is only a 15 day vacation so it’s time to get on the road. So today we’re heading north, at least a little bit to see the changing landscape of rural Sweden. As we head north, the houses disappear, and we are quickly transported to a land for fields and forests similar to northern New England in the US. The only significant difference is the shape of the houses, and the fact that almost all of them are painted a dark red color with white trim. Evidently, this is a traditional color combination for northern Sweden that began in the ... read more

Today was a busy day in Stockholm – it’s hard to say too much about this wonderful city. Having toured some of the city and the countryside, I now understand the attraction. We started our morning by meeting our local guide, Marco, the quintessential Stockholm man – young, charming, with a handsome face, perfect body, pink shirt and every hair in place. Our tour began with a visit to Stockholm City Hall, which would not normally be expected to be very impressive, but this city hall was very impressive. Built in the 1920’s with both public and private funds, the City Hall was very architecturally and artistically impressive. The building is massive and built in the National Romantic style The main hall is called the Blue Room, and is brick, not blue. The original design called ... read more

Today is a quiet travel day as we make our way to Stockholm for the next two days. The itinerary shows us arriving in Stockholm around 4:00PM, dropping our stuff at the hotel, and hopping on a boat to head out to dinner. Maja decided that it would be too hectic to try to head on out to dinner after a long day on the bus, so the dinner was postponed until tomorrow night after we had rested. Good plan! So, this morning we hit the road at 8:00AM and left the metropolis of Gothenburg behind to head northeast the 300 miles cross country to Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. Along the way we plan to make a couple of stops and still make it into Stockholm by 4:00PM. The first stop is at the Grannabergets ... read more

After yesterday’s rainy afternoon in Copenhagen, the forecast for today was windy in the morning with temperatures rising during the day and a bright sunny afternoon in Gothenburg, Sweden as we headed northeast. Unfortunately, the weatherman could not have been more wrong. As we left a slightly breezy Copenhagen in the morning, the rain began and the temperature began to drop. By the time we got to Gothenburg, it was cold, rainy, and we were in shorts and t-shirts. But the bus ride was nice, and the scenery began to change as we crossed into Sweden and headed northeast. Maja went over some of the differences between Denmark and Sweden that we may not have noticed. There are not nearly as many bicycles in Sweden as Denmark, as all of Denmark is almost completely flat while ... read more

Finally we can start a countdown in weeks 😍 Okay, it's still a little bit longer than 11 weeks, but it feels as if we're almost there. We are so excited to go! 🥳 From now on we will try to add more blogs on this page and keep you posted about all our preparations. And yes, we need to prepare a lot 🥹 The last months we were talking about all our expectations. The weather conditions and all the clothes we have to pack for it 🧳 But also the food. We have to bring our meals and snacks for the whole week 🥣 and actually, it sounds easier than it is. Of course, we travel by car so we can bring a lot and in an easier way than when we would go by ... read more

A bunch of mini adventures with the family before and after our Arctic trip. We did a lot over the course of about ten days Snowstorm When I first arrived by train from Copenhagen, it was snowing. By the end of the day, it was coming down hard. We took the metro from the train station because of the slush. It was so pretty and wintry to see this on first arrival, the new fallen snow covering the trees and roofs. The kids and Aunt D went sledding that night (well, it was probably like 3pm, but it was dark). They enjoyed making snowballs. We visited the Vasa Museum the next day, walking most of the route which took about 30 minutes - the trams were shut down, so our options were limited. The kids complained, ... read more

On our last day, we decided to drive the 90 minutes even further north to explore the town of Abisko, one of the best places to see the Northern lights. I will warn you - it was gorgeous. My photos do not do it justice. We left around 9:30 am so we were driving throughout the peak of daylight. Essentially, it is a beautiful blur between sunrise and sunset, incredible colors the whole time. The ride itself was easy and beautiful (despite a bit of GPS confusion in the city of Kiruna and stopping for me to view the expansive mine operations in the distance). We stopped a couple of times for photos, including when we saw the large Lake Tometrask, more mountainous country, trains over bridges, and the snow covered landscape. We also stopped at ... read more

My sisters, their families and I took the 15 hour overnight train to the far north of Sweden: Kiruna, 150 km north of the arctic circle. I was actually quite excited for the train ride (I love trains), but a couple of the adults were a bit nervous (I won't say who). We had booked two cabins, each slept 6 people. The 6 kids all enjoyed some cousin time in their own cabin, while the adults played some bean board game two cabins down. We had asked the middle cabin if they wanted to switch, but they were an incomplete group of strangers. The wine came out and we stated to enjoy our time, but the two families were divided come bed time. I made up most of the beds, climbing to the top bunk and ... read more
