A military power during the 17th century, Sweden has not participated in any war in almost two centuries. An armed neutrality was preserved in both World Wars. Sweden's long-successful economic formula of a capitalist system interlarded with substantial welfare elements was challenged in the 1990s by high unemployment and in 2000-02 by the global economic downturn, but fiscal discipline over the past several years has allowed the country to weather economic vagaries. Indecision over the country's role in the political and economic integration of Europe delayed Sweden's entry into the EU until 1995, and waived the introduction of the euro in 1999.To be updated

I've often heard about the wonders of Paris in the Springtime, but never once have heard of Stockholm in the Fall. So, I'm here to tell you about the wonders of Stockholm in the fall. Before I get into the whirlwind trip to Stockholm, I want to take a minute to tell you about the great travel director I've got here. I haven't given Jeff much credit since we arrived...mostly, I've just given him grief. He's done a remarkable job getting us where we need/want to go. I get overwhelmed with the language, the options, all the details and have a [View Full Entry]

It was originally the Danes and is now the Swedes. It is quite tall--think of how many stairs to the top!
I had been really looking forward to going to Sweden as at least 3 really great things come from there: those little red Swedish fish, Swedish meatballs....AND Swedish Massage! While I didn't partake of any of those three things while there (I will get a massage next time) Sweden did not fail to be a great time! Our first trip to Sweden was about two weeks ago. Amazingly Sweden is only forty minutes away (20 on the train, and 20 on a ferry). We went to Helsingborg, a beautiful waterfront town. There we explored a tower that was used to see [View Full Entry]

So I guess this is one of the few times before I leave that I have time to actually write a post here. I really don't know where to start. This is probably one of the most crazy adventures that I have ever "signed up for". Allthough, I hope that it's just the beginning and that many more amazing experiences will come from it. I guess I don't have that much more to say for now, other than that I will miss my friends but just so you know I am only a short msgs or email away from you! Only [View Full Entry]

My good and patient Swedish teacher.
We've been here now for two full months,I'm having a hard time resolving within myself how those days can feel like forever and hardly at all, all at the same time. I want/need to stop counting the days until we go "home"- don't quote me on that - but I'm going to try. Last week we had incredible weather, what we in Minnesota would call Indian Summer. In Sweden, it's referred to as "Brit Summer" (and I may have that wrong)...call it what you want, just give me more! As I look out the window, the trees are starting to turn. [View Full Entry]

It's been awhile since I wrote something but I got a good excuse. I was studying and studying. I had to go back to Germany for a few days but not for fun but for my Vordiplom. I had to take the mathematics exam and .... tadaa ... I made it. But that's not the whole of it. Additionally I had to write another exam only 2 days later but here in Sweden. But guess what. I passed that too and now I am a really happy guy. So I thought it is about time to make an update. Two days [View Full Entry]

This weekend we trekked up North to visit Alissa's relatives in Sweden. Alissa and I stayed with Stig and Bettina and their teenage sons, Peter and Gustaf in Eskilstuna, about an hour and a half outside of Stockholm while Josh and Emily stayed in Stockholm for the weekend. The flight on "Hola Air" (oh yes...) went reasonably well and we were at Arlanda by Thursday evening. We got to ride in a car (hey, that's exciting when you have been traveling by train, plane and foot for 6 weeks!) and drove out to their home. The next morning, following our traditional(?) A Weekend in Amsterdam

 Europe » Sweden » Kronoberg » Växjö
Greetings from Sweden! Last weekend I met Kai in Amsterdam for three nights and we had a blast! I left Vaxjo at 9:30am Thursday morning, catching the bus to the train station. I caught a train to Copenhagen which took 2 1/2 hours. It was really foggy that morning but luckily the fog lifted by the time I flew out. I got a window seat on a "City-Hopper", its a plane seating 50 people that fly short distances in Europe. The view from the plane was amazing as we left Copenhagen. I saw the long bridge that connects Malmo, Sweden to [View Full Entry]
