Hej! I went to Stockholm for the first time last weekend. My friend from Duluth, Cassy, came to visit me Wednesday night and we left on Thursday afternoon. We took a 4 hour train there and found our hostel without a problem. We got some dinner and went bar hopping. Kai met us a few hours later when he got to town. The next day we went to Skansen, the only outdoor museum with a zoo! It was really fun. We went to dinner and went out bar hopping again around the city. Cassy left for her airport at three in the morning and we saw her off. On Saturday, Kai and I went to Gamla Stan, the oldest part of the city. It was definitely the most beautiful part. We went to a pub called Stampens run by an American musician. They sang in English but spoke Swedish between songs. When we first went in, it was the Saturday afternoon ritual of Blues Jams by different artists. It was kind of like Open Mic where each group plays two songs. Everyone was really talented. I had a glass of my favorite beer Newcastle for 54 kronos. If you do the
Big Ship!
This is a Viking Line ship that travels from Stockholm to Helsinki, it's huge! conversion, you will find out how expensive beer is in Stockholm. After watching a few bands, Kai and I returned to our hostel to make some dinner. A few hours later, we went back to Stampens to see a blues band play in the lower level and a dixieland (complete with a clarinet leader) band play on the main level. The music was excellent! Everyone except for Kai and I were our parents' age, but that didn't really matter. We got a few confused looks, since Swedish youth like their dance clubs instead. We watched the dixieland band for a long time and when they finished we went back downstairs to watch the blues band. They played The Doors, The Who, and Chuck Berry! We danced a lot right next to the stage and I sang all the lyrics I knew, it was so much fun!! We went up to the lead singer when they were done and told him how much we enjoyed their playing. He commented that we were good dancers and must be American because we knew the songs. He said we were pretty young and we just laughed and said we love the blues. On Sunday,
we went to the Vasa Museum where the sunken Vasa ship has been recovered from the sea and placed in the museum. It was huge! It sank after 20 minutes on the sea because they put the guns too high in the ship and it keeled over in the wind. There was a lot of other information in the museum and it was very interesting. Then we went to the beautiful Nordic museum. It looks like a royal palace and it had a lot of great artifacts. On Sunday evening, we got dressed up and went to a fancy place for dinner. We had our first red wine and red meat in Sweden (this is quite an expensive treat here for students). The waitress didn't bring our bill over for about 45 minutes after we were done eating, must be the Swedish way. We relaxed that night and went our separate ways on Monday morning. It was a fabulous time! My only complaint is the prices. But with those prices come very high quality goods, places, and people 😊 The architecture is so beautiful and there is water everywhere. The subway system is stellar; we never waited more than 5
minutes for the right train. Everyone was very polite and spoke English, which was very helpful. I recommend everyone go there someday because it is like no other city. Now I am back in Vaxjo until my next adventure. I hope everyone is doing well at home and I hope you enjoyed reading about my experience. Check out the pictures! Love, Emily
