One of many little streets in the old town - surprisingly easy to avoid the tourists and see the island as it should be.

Warm days, clear skies, lots of flowers - this seemed very typical and so different from the February I'd spent here in Stockholm!

At various points around the Royal Palace, guards would stand and, following the worn tracks on the ground, march some 30 feet.

Within the numerous meadows in Skansen, visitors would gather flowers to make garlands for their hair. Young and old, no one was exempt.

The crowds were gathering for the raising of the maypole on the eve of the longest day. This little girl found a way to pass the time by practicing gurning - which wasn't on the list of activities!

The raising of the maypole is a central event in the Midsommarfest. Amidst cheering and clapping, the Maypole slowly made its way to the perpendicular.

This native of Sweden and her cubs delighted the crowds at feeding time.

I'm not sure where this particular specimen lived as he was only seen once during our 4 day visit. However, although he didn't show is tail feathers, he was a very fine specimen.

There were a large number of ships and boats moored alongside the island, but none was as pretty as this lady.

Over the midsommar, virtually everything was shut. There were very few shops open, this stall being one - just off the main shopping area.

This delightful water sculpture was in the grounds of the theatre - as were a number of individuals playing boules.
