So last night I got a call from my "friend mom" asking if I'd like to go long skating with her and her partner. I have to admit I questioned this considering the weather has been so warm around here lately...but i went with it because I thought if nothing else it would be an amazing experience. For those who don't know, long skating is quite different than normal skating. You have boots that sometimes have a square toe, and you strap the blades on to that and kind of just tie them around. It requires a fair amount of equipment to get out there on the lake. My friend family go out quite a bit so they happened to have everything. I had a backpack with extra warm clothing that had to be strapped across ... read more

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” -Mark Twain Gotta love Mark Twain. I did always like the sound of taking that path less travelled and now, here I am. I've been back in Sweden now for nearly a month. What a strange feeling it is to be back in a place that now seems in many ways so familiar, but also new again. A fresh group of exchange students have come this semester and many of my friends have gone home. All the hellos and goodbyes are a bit overhwhelming actually. This place has seemed like one really big ... read more

Well hello again! This is a whole new thing for me- 2 posts in 2 days!! I just wanted to update with a few pictures of what I woke up to this morning. Sweden is funny in the sense that last night when I went to bed there was absolutely no indication that when I woke up I should be pulling out the Christmas decorations and roasting chestnuts on an open fire. It's a frigan winter wonderland over here! The weather is not so cold (which is probably what makes it such prime conditions for so much snow!) as it is just 1 degree here and will apparently be a high of 3 the rest of the week. The catch is, it is supposed to snow from now right through to Thursday! Oh boy! Someone is ... read more

So once again I have certainly been neglecting my blog. I guess it's kind of a good thing because I've been so busy living I haven't had much of a chance to write about it. A few exciting things have happened since my last post. I had the amazing opportunity to go to Stockholm and see the NHL game opener. It was probably one of the most thrilling moments ever!! The game was the San Jose Sharks vs the Columbus Blue Jackets. I really don't know much about either team but I decided sharks are cooler so I cheered for San Jose, who won of course. Since then I've been live streaming every NHL game I can get my hands on. The only part I don't like so much is the time difference. Games begin at ... read more

So this post will be a bit of a different one from the norm. I haven't done much poetry writing since I've been here but for some reason walking to school the other day I looked around and truly came to appreciate how gorgeous it is here in the fall. Next thing I know- POOF- I was writing again. I don't normally share my poems with anyone but since this one was written here about the things I see around me, experiences I'm having and how they make me feel, I thought I would post it as part of the catalogue of my journey. Summer's Passing, Winter's Glory Gold and crimson silk Patchworks of quilted time. Laces of silvery threaded frost, Tempestuous winter's crime. Muddied waters of frozen moonbeams, Heaven's skyward glare. Innocent yearning for tepid ... read more

Hello Beautiful Blog Readers! So I'm back to discuss other Swedish lessons I've learned since I've been here- and there have been many! First are those I've learned in my Swedish language course. Not having any prior knowledge of the language I'm finding the whole thing a tiny bit difficult. I find it totally humiliating to say any of the words out loud because of how bad my pronunciation is which really doesn't help because my Swedish friends want me to say things I've learned in class and I don't want to. Every Wednesday when I come home from class grumbling over how hard it is my one roommate makes me tell him a new phrase I learned so that I have to practice it. Mean. During my complaints about Swedish class this particular roommate stopped ... read more

Hej Hej!! So glad the server is finally up and working because I've been dying to talk about the excursion I went on! I went as part of a class I'm taking about Swedish history and culture. It was fantastic! We left at 9am and stopped first at Rök where we gathered around an ancient rune stone. It is the oldest known runic inscription in stone. Pretty cool. The inscription is pre-Christian and about 760 characters. Our teacher can read the old Viking language and translated the words for us. Rune stones are built in memory of those who died and this 4 ton solid granite masterpiece is no exception. Just amazing! Next we toured the countryside and our teachers pointed out important landmarks along the way but our final destination were the ruins of Alvastra ... read more

Hello All!! So I've been really incredibly lame updating this blog lately. I even had to read over the last entry to even remember what I haven't written about yet...poor neglected travel blog. Well I guess since then I experienced the joys of a student bar/pub. It was great! A few of us hung out on the patio and drank the cheapest thing they had to offer- vodka and redbull. Although cheap and wonderful I won't think I slept at all that night. I'm starting to really enjoy the black licorice shots (called something in the area of Turkish Pepper) and mintu alcohol. Not that all I'm doing is getting drunk but they certainly make it taste better than we do in Canada. After the bar we went over to a concert offered free by the ... read more

Helloo all So today was quite the exciting day! I was all worried because I didnt think my I was giving my address out correctly but I received a package from home!! It's so weird, I've only been here like 2 weeks but getting mail or packages from Canada is SO exciting! I've been sick lately too so the comforts of home are definitely welcome. This cold is kicking my butt!! Funny story: I went to the pharmacy downtown today to get something to help me breathe so I can sleep at night and the pharmacist laughed at me and told me I sounded funny. I do have this weird honking sort of thing going on that is kind of unnattractive. I believe she compared me to the sound of a pig because I'm so congested. ... read more

Gamla Linkoping was fabulous! Of course the moment we arrived it started to absolutely pour but we tried to navigate our way around regardless. It really is funny that once it starts raining everyone takes cover here- hiding in the little shops and things. I think it's funny because it rains so often here you would be stuck inside constantly if you tried to hide from the rain. Umbrellas aren't even really all that helpful as I find it often blows sideways so you're soaked regardless. I've learned to embrace my bad hair. I have also discovered the secret to why so many Swedish people are as thin as they are! First of all I've done so much walking since I've been here it's insane. Also, while we walked around Gamla Linkoping we came across this ... read more
