Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment. To be updated

To the Castle!

Roman ruins and fairytale castles Where is my prince? We took a daytrip to Segovia today to see the Roman aqueduct (still functional, but not in use) and Alcazar castle (whichWalt Disney used as an inspiration for his castle for DisneyLand). We started at the aqueduct and Jaime (our guide) explained the history of the area and the modern lifestyle they enjoyed 2500 years ago. The aqueduct allowed them indoor plumbing and sewage systems. Jaime is a Ph.D. student studying international relations and had wonderful English. Mary and I were lucky enough to have lunch wit [View Full Entry]

Bending time

 Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Girona
As a virgin to Spanish soil, I had anticipated this moment for many a long hour. What would Spain look like, taste like, smell like? People from all over had crowded my vision with their own anecdotes and feelings, and the pre fabricated images of a lazy siesta-ing country were at the forefront of my remarkabley un-vivid imagination. I was feeling a bit lost about the whole thing. And then I arrived in Girona. The absolute image of what I imagined a Spanish town to be, without me even quite knowing what I was expecting. Archetypal ancient ruins, classic cornices and [View Full Entry]

I wish I could tell you something about Barcelona. But I spent only two days there, and one of them was sleeping. I blame my "landlord" who I'd lucked upon the previous night as I searched for accommodation in a local internet cafe (sensing a theme here? Pre-booking accommodation has not been my strong point!). He was offering rooms for rent, I was looking... and well, Juan's your uncle. A night at Sugar later and I was in tatters. Memories of Sugar in Adelaide came flooding back, and made my head hurt even more. Damn those Spaniards and their double shots. [View Full Entry]

Flirting in Rome Chocolate Gelato Mary and I had a busy day touring the local primary care clinic in Toledo. We were able to learn more about the distribution of care in Toledo's version of Universal Health Care. What was most striking was the similarities of how the systems work; the amount of time office visits were, who is seen by who, the focus of primary prevention. The differences seemed to mostly on how care is payed for and the organization of care to be closer to the population (and the use of home visits to provide care to those who [View Full Entry]

Friday, May 26th, 2006 It's really early in the morning and I know I should go to sleep, but I got to write this down before I forget. I went out with Alysia and her friend from work, Maureen, also an American, tonight. The Nu~nez de Balboa (metro) area is really nice. Now I'm thinking that I'm really living in the hood. =P We went to this awesome resturant that was cheap and very good. Gotta go back tere again. We had a spinach and mozerlla salad, then a bunch of different tapas. And it only came to 32 euro for [View Full Entry]

First Week

 Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Seville
Hi All- I´m just getting into a routine so far. It has almost been my first week here in Spain. I have downloaded my photos onto kodak.com for those who are in my circle. I promise to post here soon. Finding a room for a single traveler is difficult. Either you can stay in a hostel (alburgue juvenil), which I did for one night. They were full for the rest of the time, so if you go during the summer book ahead. I then walked from pension to pension which is listed as a hostel (inexpensive hotel) and found one for [View Full Entry]

The Four Posts and Avila at night
Hey guys! Sorry its been a while since Ive updated. Traveling around with 3 other people, especially this group keeps me soooo busy! I pass out hard every night! Matt and his sister got in to Madrid on Sat morning. We immediately went to Avila which was a lot of fun to show them around. Avila was a good place to start out because there´s not much to do and we were all extremely tired, especially Matt and Beth because of the time change. It was fun to climb the walls and see the Four Posts at night though because I [View Full Entry]

All I wanted to do was sleep, but I didn’t get any of that done. I didn’t even bring my paper in. I told the professor that my computer hadn’t been working the last two days and that the final copy of my paper was on the computer. I told he I had the first draft on a disk, but I had to fix it up. I don’t know if she believed me or not, but she said that I could turn it in any time this weekend. Sweet! Right before the test, Oscuro had told me about this one artist, [View Full Entry]

Inside El Prado
Inside El Prado
This is pretty much what every room looked like -- full of people.
Today was a fun filled day of tours and exploring. We started off the day early with a tour of El Prado museum where we were partially able to see famous works by El Greco, Goya, and Valesquez. I say partially because there were a ton of people in the museum... so many that we could rarely see all of a painting and could barely hear the tour guide (which didn´t help any, because the tour was in Spanish). After that, we had roughly 4 hours of free time to explore the city so a group of 5 guys + me [View Full Entry]
