Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment. To be updated

I've never been so happy to return to Spain than I was after leaving Ireland! Actually, come to think of it, that was the first time I have ever returned to Spain...lol. Anyway, the warm weather was so welcoming when we stepped off the plane from Ireland. My cold is doing much better now, I've been heavily medicating, which has paid off. Grandma, I've really been using the kleenex and vix you sent me! Thanks! Today I went on an optional tour that API offered, just to a few places around Seville. We went to an old hospital/church, and then toured [View Full Entry]

Aviles!

Oh…today was kind of a long day. We actually went inside the Prado today. I learned about Ribera, Valezques, and Zabana. I appreciate art so much more. No regrets about taking this class. After Art I was on a mission to get a present for Andrea. I had NO idea what to get her. I realized that I don’t know what music she like, what she reads, or what activities she enjoys. What kind of friend am I? Yikes! So after an hour of looking, I just got her a shirt, a belt, eye shadow, a ring, and earrings, all to [View Full Entry]

----- Being in a car here is not the most relaxing experience, in fact I think that its one giant “Oh my God!” moment. I don’t think I would be able to adapt to driving here especially in roundabouts I still don’t understand how they work and I go through two at lest everyday. Another thing the speed limits here are quite crazy, I don’t think 70 km for a two way road in moderate disrepair that is to thin for to car to pass is very sane. The only thing in the favour here is that the drivers even though [View Full Entry]

Basketball girls, this is called a liat tar (we pronounce it ¨lay tar¨) to go along with tellums, for you who don´t know the code, rat tails and mullets ...this is not even as good as it gets either..... [more]
So I finally got the pictures up...yeah for that. You´ll have to excuse them because they´re on the wrong entries, but I am not going to change them, maybe some other time when I don´t have to pay for this service. Today was relaxing...it is so beautiful here I really just want to go to the beach, while to locals are still in long coats and scarfs because this is cold for them still. I am resisting the urge to wear shorts because it is quite an uncommon thing around here. This place is very hip, I cannot get over it. [View Full Entry]

I made it

Europe » Spain » District of Madrid
So I woke up early to do the homework I failed to finish yesterday. I really dread Thursday’s. All day I was saying “Someone shoot me in the face.” I stress so much about my two papers I have to do every week and yesterday I couldn’t find any information. I was so frustrated. I finished two assignments, but the third one I just didn’t turn in. Luckily I wasn’t the only person who had trouble finding information. Only two girls turned in the paper. We tried to ask questions in class, but she didn’t answer them too well. I’ll just [View Full Entry]

Weds March 22nd Granada Having been given a free pass Steve and I departed Cadiar (without kids) and retraced our steps along the Lanjaron road to Granada. It's almost as scary in that direction. Compared to the Alpujarras, Granada is a huge metropolis and the traffic is horrendous..as are the road signs. We found a sign for the hotel we had booked a room in, followed it and then the signs stopped! A couple of circuits and we found the hotel ...with road works, complete with digger, outside stopping us getting to it. A brief tour of the back roads and [View Full Entry]

In a carriage
Introduction Due to frustration with the American Embassy, i booked flights on Tuesday and flew to Seville on Thursday to spend a couple of days with my cousin Sophie before heading over to Morocco for 10 days. It was really nice to be able to just sticks and leave without any firm plans. I didn't take many pictures in Seville, partly because it preys on my pride to lower myself to the level of the fat American happy snapping tourists. I suppose that the other excuse I have is that I was enjoying wandering around so much that I didn't want [View Full Entry]
