I only spent a day in Lugo after walking from Leon on the Caminos de San Salvador y Primitivo, but it deserves its own post. Tourism in Europe during the summer is completely out of control. Cities like Madrid and Barcelona are inundated with tourists, which means long lines, a ceaseless flow of tours and scams, American fast food chains, junk shops with souvenirs made in China, and even worse a loss of cultural authenticity. Even midsized cities like Granada and Cordoba have elements of this, despite the broiling heat. But most smaller cities like Lugo (and Leon, Zaragoza, Valladolid and probably a couple dozen others) fly under the radar. If you speak a bit of Spanish, I recommend prioritizing these cities even if you have to skip the big ones entirely. If traveling for you ... read more

After walking the Camino de San Salvador from Leon to Oviedo, I continued onto the Camino Primitivo, which begins in Oviedo and passes through the Asturias and Galicia regions. It eventually joins with the Camino Frances for the final two days before reaching Santiago de Compostela, but time constraints only allowed me to walk the first 208 km from Oviedo to Lugo. This worked out well since I wouldn't enjoy walking with hundreds of pilgrims at the end of the French Way. It’s called the Primitivo because it was the first camino, not because it is the most primitive, though the accommodations are mostly basic albergues, which are like basic hostels - bunk bed, one big bathroom, little privacy. It’s busier than El Camino de San Salvador, with maybe 40-50 pilgrims in each etapa (stage). But ... read more

Today was our last day in Malaga, so again we got up pretty late, and just wandered around town. We ate lunch at the Restaurant Malaka. We both ordered Ensaladilla and I ordered a shrimp pincho. The ensaladilla rusa was pretty good, although a bit sweet. The shrimp pincho was very good, and the only thing wrong with it was there wasn't enough. After lunch we wandered back to the pension to take a nap. We watched a movie and then about 7pm we decided to walk back down to the beach. We walked the whole beach, and stopped at a restaurant for dinner. I didn't take a picture, and I don't remember the name, but Manoli ordered ham and mushrooms and I ordered albondigas (meatballs). They were both quite good. After dinner, since we were ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Chipiona June 27th 2023

This morning we woke up, packed our stuff, turned in the key to our room, and headed to the bus station. We took bus number 1 to the bus station, arriving a bit early. We ate lunch at a cafeteria in the bus station. Manoli ate a pork soup and I had an order of shrimp pil pil. Both were pretty good. We boarded our bus around 2pm and headed to Chipiona, via Cadiz, and a few other stops. After a few stops in other places, we arrived at the Cadiz bus station around 5pm. We had about a half hour wait until the connecting bus to Chipiona. Finally the bus boarded and we got on for the last leg of our trip, to Chipiona, my wife's hometown. When we pulled into the Chipiona bus station, ... read more

Today was a down day, with nothing much to do. Manoli had looked over the map to see what might be interesting. We left the pension around 11am or so, and headed to the beach. It was a fairly long walk, but pretty interesting too. We arrived at Malagueta Beach, one of the main beaches in Malaga, and after a short walk along the beach, Manoli spotted the Chiringuito Sicsu Bar. She had heard it served pretty good food, so we stopped. Pretty much every table was outside, but covered with awnings to keep off the sun. Also, since they had the area cordoned off, we had to wait in line for a few minutes to get a table. We sat down, looked over the menu, and ordered our lunch. Manoli decided to try their seafood ... read more

Today was our day to walk the Caminito del Rey, a very famous "hanging walkway". We'd booked it a couple of days ago, for us and Salome. The tour started by picking us up in a bus in front of the Ayuntamiento at like 8:30am, so we had to get up early and walk down. The bus arrived on time, and was apparently pretty full. After boarding, and our guide introducing herself, in English, Spanish, and French, we headed towards the town of Ardales. Just before arriving, we stopped at a large gas station/store for our restroom, drink and snack break. The guide told us there would be limited availability of those things at the entrance, and none during the hike. I, like everyone else, took advantage of the restrooms, and also bought a few lollipops ... read more

Today we planned on taking a bus to Nerja, a town not far from Malaga. Nerja is famous for three things; the Balcon de Europe, a balcony on a cliff overlooking the beach; the Cuevas de Nerja, a pretty famous cave in which was discovered remains from prehistoric times; and as the location for a famous television series "Verano Azul" and the boat that appeared in the series, La Dorada Primera. We walked down the street and took bus 1 to the bus station, meeting up with Salome. We waited a bit, then took the next bus to Nerja. After we disembarked in the town, we strolled down to the beach. Here is where the Balcon del Europa was located. First we walked through a small opening, then took a walkway to the beach. After a ... read more

Today, our 2nd day in Cartagena, we planned on visiting some museums and taking the tourist boat around the bay. We left the hotel a little after 10am, and wandered down to the marina or port. Yesterday evening we'd been to the port to check it out and found out there was a tourist boat that went around the bay, stopping at the Faro del Navidad, or the Christmas Lighthouse. Apparently its called that because there are two lighthouses, one on each side of the port, green and red. The next boat didn't leave for awhile, so we decided to check out the Museo Naval. It was very interesting and informative, displaying models of ships from quite a few centuries, plus armament and other naval displays. When the time came for the boat, we walked out ... read more

Today we were heading to Malaga, our last stop, and our longest trip. We got up, took a shower, and packed our stuff. After checking out (by the way I highly recommend the Loop Inn Hostel), we headed down to the bus station, to catch our bus to Malaga. The bus ride took a bit over 4 hours, with one stop for a break/lunch. The views were nice, but the rest stop was even better. El Romeral was in the middle of nowhere, so to speak, but had a decent restaurant/cafe. Manoli had a chicken sandwich and I had a seafood salad. Both were pretty good. After about a half hour break, we reboarded the bus and continued our trip to Malaga. I think we pulled into Malaga around 6pm and met my niece Salome at ... read more

Since our bus didn't leave until after 1pm, we got up late as usual, packed up, and headed to the bus station. After a fairly scenic ride, we arrived in Cartagena, and although we had directions, with the twisting streets and some uphills, we asked how to get to the tourism office. A kind gentleman not only pointed us in the right direction, he led us there. When we talked to the person in the tourism office, they told us it was just up the next street, but she noticed our large bag and recommended a slightly longer route that would be a lot easier. We thanked her and headed up, and up, and up. Good thing we listened to her, because the stairs would have been a killer. We found the Loop Inn Hostel, near ... read more
