Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

Day 5 Just a quick note and photo til we can find time to update the rest of the blog entries and photos. Wanted to share a BEAUTIFUL view from the terrace of our hotel, where we are hanging out while updating the blog. Behind us in the background is the Castille de Santa Barbara- it is almost always present in the background, wherever you go here. At night, it is lit up, and almost surreal. We have promised to get there before we head out to Malaga. [View Full Entry]

Ola Bo & Dud, Someone turned the thermostat up in Spain, we are currently getting temperatures in the mid 30c and the sun is extremely hot. It’s been far too hot for driving about in the car and site seeing so we’ve been awaiting a little cloud cover before setting out. Guadalest was top of our list for a visit. This is a historical town perched on one of the highest points of the Costa Blanca - its nickname is “The Eagles Nest”, you will see why when looking at the photographs. Initially, the village was built up around the Castle [View Full Entry]

This is why we came to Valcenia
We started our final day on a rough note…. Judith was sick, we are not sure if it is food poising, the water (which was fine in Madrid) or a stomach virus but she was up most of the night and we got little sleep. It started 2 days back but got worst last night. No worries though, the wounded trooper got up on time, got ready and we were off to our final destination. The drive to Valencia along the coast was very nice and if we had more time I would have taken all the back roads to enjoy [View Full Entry]

April 25, 26, 2008 VALENCIA / PLAYA VORAMAR, Spain We enjoyed the drive through the Spanish countryside to Valencia and on to Playa Voramar ( an hour north of Valencia. This is beautiful country with great views of the Mediteranean, the mountains, thousands of vineyards, orange ( famous Valencia Oranges ) and olive groves as well as other fruit and vegetable gardens. Playa Voramar is a beautiful place with a great beach. One of the nicest beaches we've ever seen. We were a little early as some of the facilities are just opening for the season. It is evident here that [View Full Entry]

I was to fly to Spain on the 22nd of April, departing from Buillund. This all went smoothly enough, but when I arrived 30 min early and had all my luggage, I was amazed. Normally, an early flight is no real cause for amazement, but after hearing the numerous horror stories floating around the aether related to Ryanair, I was suitably impressed. Despite the flight being early, it was still 2230. Not wanting to wait aruond for a bus, I hailed a cab and 12 Euro later I was in Valencia. I met Gemma, my host, dumped my bags at her [View Full Entry]

After leaving Toledo, we arrived in Atocha (Madrid train station) and decided to leave our large backpacks in lockers and grab what we needed for the night and set out for a hotel. This can sometimes be an easy goal and other times, not as easy. You wind up stopping at a hotel, asking the price, seeing if breakfast is included and then ask to view the room to see if it’s worth the money all while trying to speak and understand spanish. We eventually found a very cute loft apt that was in a great area that was cheaper than [View Full Entry]

Dear Bo & Dud, What a surprise the Costa Blanca has been to us - a few days in Benidorm has turned into a couple of weeks, which in turn, is probably going to become a month! Our situation is glorious - we are almost in a basin, surrounded by the glorious Serra de Aitana. The camp site is much bigger than our usual choice, the facilities are superb and the parcela is hedge marked, huge and fully serviced. There are two pools (cool water) and I can usually find some time during the day when I can swim alone - [View Full Entry]

So, I wrote this blog entry already, but thanks to my wonderful laptop, I lost it! I can't guarantee that this entry will be as good as the other one I wrote, but I'll try... In recent news, today was the BIG day. It was the day that my 10+ page paper was due. I e-mailed it to my advisor at SNC yesterday. Oh, and it ended up being 15 pages! Go me! This weekend Kaley and I went to Alicante, which is on the Meditteranean coast. It was a fun trip! It took us about 3.5 hours to get there [View Full Entry]
