Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

This is a legitimate rest day, something that we don´t end up doing too often because of our personalities or because there seems to be all these things we ¨should¨see when traveling or because as Americans we are always aspiring to do more and have as many experiences as possible. This is our thrid full day in Valencia, a vibrant city that retains much of the charm of a small town. We first arrived here after what we foolishly anticipated would be an easy day of 50 km that turned out to be a trying endevor pocked by sections of [View Full Entry]

One of the great parts of staying in Barcelona for more than just a couple of days was I got to know some people at the hostel fairly well. A cool american called Dave from Boulder Colorado (such an american name), a lovely lady Maywa from Malaysia and an aussie girl Holly from the one and only Canberra. As we were both heading to Valencia we ended up getting the train together that morning and Maywa arrived later. On arrival Valencia comes across as a really nice city, so we checked into the hotel and spent that afternoon at the beach. [View Full Entry]

All together

Today we started our new classes. This comes as good news because this means that we don´t have to sit through our intensive Spanish class for three hours every day. I was a little sad because my teacher for the first few weeks, Mar, is no longer my instructer. Instead, I have this lady Rosa who is a little crazy, but still a good teacher I think. So, I still have my two Spanish classes with Rosa, and now I have Spanish Cinema and The Spanish Civil War. It is really cool to have classes about subjects other than grammer and [View Full Entry]

¿Que Pasó?

Europe » Spain » Valencian Community » Alicante
Seeing as how it is the last day of September, I thought I would upade my blog. I guess I start with last Saturday... After a rough Friday night, (fun rough, not bad rough) I had to wake up super early to catch my bus with the rest of my friends for a planned day trip of the provence of Alicante. Still under the influence, we drove about an hour to this cave up in the middle of some mountain. Once we were inside it was actually pretty cool. I didn´t catch everyting the guide was saying but I did hear [View Full Entry]

The Church in El Barrio
We walked around and took some pictures of el barrio during the day since we usually only see it at night.
Yes, I finally got some of my pictures uploaded. I hope you all enjoy them as much as I enjoyed taking them (some of them are from El Barrio). Tuesday nights here in Alicante are Guacamole Nights. This bar that a lot of us hang out at, Austins, has amazing guac every Tuesday. The reason this rocks so much is because the guac is a little spicy. You may think that is not a big deal, but seriously, it is probably the spiciest thing in all of Alicante. I don´t know if it is a regional thing or a country thing, [View Full Entry]

Jellys

I just got out of another three hour class which was a little hard to get through. I have not been sleeping well the past two nights. I think my small bed might be getting the best of me. All of us are trying to figure out what we are going to do for our fall break. Some kids are going to Moracco and some are going to Rome. I was thinking with some kids that we would go to Athens, but that idea is turning out to be really expensive. If anyone has great ideas please let me know. Later [View Full Entry]

My Room
My Room
It´s awesome but my bed is kinda short.
So, setting up this whole blog thing has been a pain. I set up this blog and then tried to access it in spain and was not able to. I then set up another blog and wrote in it for an hour only to have it erased. Now I am hoping that this blog will work and will continue to work. Alright, so Spain has been nothing short of amazing. I arrived 2 weeks ago today and I already feel like I have been here forever. Right when I walked into the orientation hotel I met some of the coolest people. [View Full Entry]
