April 17 My face is red. I booked a private tour in Cartagena. I Asked the tourist office where I was to meet my driver. They had no idea. After consulting the Policia and the civil guard and another couple we all learned that our tour was for Cartagena Columbia. Never noticed. My bad, except I did give the company the ship I was arriving on so I would have expected them to contact me. So I have to endure another blissful day on my private yacht. Such tough duty. When I’m wrong I’m so wrong. Wrong Country, wrong continent, wrong hemisphere. The only way I could have been more wrong was wrong planet. Sat by the pool until lunch, then headed to the Crows Nest for a prime seat by the window reading until my ... read more

The week before our planned 4 weeks of travel around Spain with a two-week extension to fit in Vienna and Budapest, lots of work was done on the boat. On Monday afternoon we were able to pick up the stainless-steel support that we took to the local boatyard to have welded. The welding job was an excellent one – they definitely have quite the craftsperson at Ascar Boatyard. Now the work had to be done to put all the 7 wires that were pulled out of it last week, back in! Trying to squeeze the wires in, especially with some of them having quite a large diameter and even larger fittings on the end, was a job but with the help of our “snake” and a little dish-soap to make the wire slippery, that part of ... read more

The dry spell continued, to our good weather fortune, when leaving the heights of Chinchilla. Atop a rocky hill, it has a history of building into the rock ‘Cuevas’ and habitaciones. Most of the older homes cling to the steep sides of the Monte-Aragon, and small rammed earth abodes with white chimneys (Torreon de la antigua muralla) can be seen from the east side. Taking in some of this before check out, we left down a steep descent beside the autovía which was a relief from the ups we’d had lately. Green trees on part of the road side gave way to plains of browns and oranges, being ploughed and planned for the winter ahead. Bird spotting was put to the side for P2 at a few completely dry wetlands around Corral Rubio, with a brief ... read more

In our previous travels people we have met from Holland, have been good fun. They certainly travel more than many other Europeans we’ve met. Our next 2 campsites we visited were run by Dutch owners, they were to play a part in our long drive up Spain’s Mediterranean coast. Having abandoned Plan A visiting Cordoba, Granada and increasingly the likelihood that Barcelona would go the same way because of the heat. Enter Plan B, to travel and camp near the coast picking up, hopefully, more of the cool sea breeze. Our first hoped stop was Marbella, the holiday destination for the super-rich. I phoned the only campsite in the area know to us -no room. We then drive through hoping to park up, but every available inch of parking was used up. Driving further up the ... read more

We woke up around 9am, and after a cup of coffee we were on way to the beach to catch the bus to the Santa Barbara Castle. At about 10:30 a small bus approached and turned out to the ours. After we boarded, along 5 or 6 others, we rode around the mountain thru a small town at the base and up the road to the parking area. We got off, and walked up to the entrace, and were surprised to find out there was no entry fee. Winding our way up and around, we reached the top level. Here, we took some good photos, then started back down, convinced we'd missed the 40-minute delay between busses, but the bus was there waiting for us. After the 20-minute ride back down, the bus stopped at our ... read more

Well, today we are moving on from Valencia to Alicante. We had bought the tickets for the train last night, but still we weren't sure of everything. We'd had the hotel order a taxi at 12:10, but we were up and ready to go by 10am or so, so we walked to the shopping center just up the street from our hotel. After browsing around, we returned to the hotel, finished packing our stuff and went downstairs to turn in the key card. The taxi showed up right on time and took us to the Alfafar station, where we bought 2 more tickets to Estacion del Norte. We were there quite early, so after confirming that our tickets to Alicante were valid, we looked for a place to eat lunch and relax. We ended up eating ... read more

We woke up earlier today because we had tickets for the Coves de Sant Josep tour and we had to be at the pickup point by 8:20am. We'd asked the hotel staff to order us a taxi for 8am. We got downstairs with plenty of time to spare, and the taxi showed up a few minutes early too. Arriving at the pickup point, we sort of wandered around a bit, making sure we were in the right place, since there were no signs. We noticed a few other people sort of waiting for something, and sure enough, they too were taking the tour also. The bus arrived ontime and away we went, the bus pretty well loaded. It was quite a long trip and one of the guides told us all along the way about history ... read more

We were pretty tired when we went to bed, so we didn't get up until 8am. There was nothing planned for today except a foot tour of Valencia... and I mean foot! We walked to Alfafar train station and caught the train to Valencia Estacion Norte. We still had a few trips paid for with our metro ticket we'd bought at the Valencia Airport. Manoli bought an 8-trip ticket that would serve for both of us to take the Metro or Train 4 times. It worked fine, except the first person thru the gate had to pass the ticket off to the other. Oh well, it was a lot cheaper than individual one-trip tickets. We arrived just a little before 10am and started checking out the Plaza Ajuntimiento sights. First, we visited the museum inside the ... read more

After kicking off the summer with a trip to Italy, I didn't really have any further travel plans and thus I wasn’t expecting to be writing again so soon - but here we are! Life has a habit of keeping you on your toes. The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the world of work forever by forcing millions of office workers to work remotely and for many companies across the globe, this forced experiment proved to be a huge success, as employers realised that productivity could be maintained or even improved, and employees realised that they really didn't need to be in the office every day anymore - that work could now be much more flexible and convenient than ever before. I am fortunate enough to be working for a company that has not just embraced remote ... read more

It’s our last full day with access to a washing machine for at least a week so we decide to make use of it while we still can. As I think I might have mentioned previously the washing machine is in a cupboard on the very much smaller of our two balconies, as is the fold out contraption that we need to hang the clothes on to dry. We quickly discover that if we try to fold out the contraption before we do the washing, we can’t get past it to get to the cupboard where the washing machine is …. unless we only half fold out the contraption….. and also bring the fold out ironing board inside so that it doesn’t get in the way too…. And then there’s the pegs issue. We’ve noticed that ... read more
