Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

The locals out on a warm Sunday evening....on sand!
We left Barcelona and got into Valencia with even better weather than what we left. It was 28 degrees C, which is like 70-80 F and we were hot walking around the city. Almost forgot it´s February! We went to an art museum and watched the locals play soccer on a hot Sunday afternoon on sand fields. It was a day of walking all around the city and getting supper and late night dessert at outdoor cafes. The next day we went to a local market and then visited Valencia´s cathedral where authorities say the Holy Grail, the cup Jesus [View Full Entry]

Well this past weekend found me once again in Valencia, but this Friday I’m headed to a pueblo outside of Valencia City called Bocairent and then the next weekend I’m planning a bigger trip to Madrid or Barcelona. My exciting news from the past week is that I've found a jiu jitsu school here in Valencia, that's about 10 minutes walking distance from my house. When I first went to the class I don't think they knew what to think of me or my attempts to communicate with them in Spanish. So I sat and watched the class and then after [View Full Entry]

Well after my first real weekend in Valencia, I can now say I’ve been in the Mediterranean Sea and to the beach in January J The weekends start early for me here as we have no Friday class, so I spent my Friday running some errands. I now have a cell phone and the nice thing about cell phones in Spain is that incoming calls are free to the recipient (wink wink . . . feel free to call me (011-34)670275697. I then spent some of the afternoon taking pictures of Valencia, but not just any pictures, pictures which prove there [View Full Entry]

Well as you can tell, I'm all safe and settled in Valencia, Spain. Hope you're ready for a long email . . . After quite the flying adventure and three days without my luggage, me and my bags made it to Valencia. I am living with a Spanish family and housemte from UVA about 5 minutes walking distance from my university. I'm very lucky because some people have to ride a bus for 30 minutes to get here. My Spanish parents are Juan and Marga and are in their mid 60s. They have two children, Blanca (33) who lives with her [View Full Entry]

Saturday January 15, 2005 As part of an introduction to Spain, I went with the entire Spanish program here on a short bus tour of Valencia and then spent the afternoon climbing to the top of an old castle located in a town 45 minutes away from Valencia called Xŕtiva. We made our way through tiny streets to the mountain road up to the castle. Upon making it to the castle we all sat on the steps and ate our “bocadillos” which are the equivalent of sandwiches for bag lunches. I was given ham and cheese on half a French baguette [View Full Entry]

4 days of relaxing and lounging in the Balearic Islands have come to an end. This morning was an early wake up as we had to catch our morning ferry to take us back to the mainland. Once we all boarded the ferry, everybody pretty much crashed for the duration of the trip. Back at the port at Denia, we reboarded our Contiki coach which seemed like it had been forever since we were last on it. We continued down the coast to the city of Valencia which is Spain's third largest city. Valencia was the only one night stop [View Full Entry]

Ah Spain! I had to review my Spanish before coming here. Anyway, i had 12 units of Spanish in college so i know it won't be difficult communicating with my ancestors - my grandmother is pure Spanish. We went around Valencia after our daily attendance to our seminars. It was indeed a charming and lively city. We spent the night at the Plaza eating Tapas. Don’t miss the Paella, it was great but we had to wait for 1 hour for our Paella to be cooked at the hotel restaurant. Anyway, for me it was worth it. [View Full Entry]
