Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

Hola everybody, Well here I am in sunny Spain and Wow what an experience so far. Firstly I think I should of taken a lot more Spanish lessons. I flew out Thursday afternoon and arrived 9.30pm. First thing first was that I had to get to Tarragona from Rues airport. The easiest option would most likely of been a taxi but you all know me, tight arse decided to do public transport seeing it would be so much cheaper. So I boarded the bus to Rues and then changed in Rues to go to Tarragona. Not overly difficult but when no [View Full Entry]

We left Barcelona early in the morning and I listened to Michael Buble songs on Dan's i-pod throughout the quick ride to Valencia. When we got to Valencia, I was immediately enamoured: clean, white and tall buildings, a beautiful fountain in the middle of a big, beautiful square, and frankly, I was just happy to be out of Barcelona. I constantly feel like I'm going to be pickpocketed at any minute there. We had to walk a fair piece in the boiling heat to our amazing hostel, Home Backpackers. Along the way, I chatted with Chris Floreani (Flo), Chris Franga (Frank [View Full Entry]

As promised here is the Fallas installation of my travel blog. Since everyone asks me "what is this thing called Fallas?" and then after an explanation I get "how is that allowed during Lent?" I will answer both of these questions for you. :) Fallas is celebrated every year March 13 - 19, the week before St. Joseph's Day. Falla means fire in Valenciano and every neighborhood and sometimes street spends hundreds of thousands of euros in the construction of various sized fallas - which are papier mache creations that they then display in their neighborhood. The theme changes every year [View Full Entry]

We’ve just come back from the Las Fallas festival in Spain. On our first day we spent the afternoon walking around the city, taking in as many of the Fallas figures as possible. They range in size from a few feet high to the size of a city building and can cost up to a hundred thousand dollars. On Thursday we made the mistake of trying to walk through the main plaza at 2.00pm to try and get to the supermarket. Unfortunately it was pretty hard to wade through 10s of thousands of people who were waiting for the daytime firework [View Full Entry]

Even came to pick me up from the airport!
Marty, Mr Electronic Superstar, has been given the opportunity to be a member of the Swiss America’s Cup Team, Alinghi, working from Valencia until mid 2007. So where do ya think the first place in Spain was going to be that I would visit? Friday off work, and out to Gatwick I go. A very uneventful plane ride later, I land at the sunny little airport to find Marty awaiting my arrival, having taken time out of his busy schedule. Off we toddled to the Tryp Oceanic, the hotel that Alinghi were housing him in. Very nice place, with great views [View Full Entry]

Here is some Paella, which is particularly famous in Valencia. Spanish people have to eat some every day. Or they die.
Hey kids, Pia here, reporting from Valencia, where the sun shines all the time and people take it slow. Or something like that. Maybe I shouldn´t be in advertising. The remainder of our time in England can be summed up by the following: mid-morning gambling, cold, Australians, cream tea, museums, horrid fish and chips, sleep, hippies, airport. There you go. We spent Tuesday night in Stansted airport, where we got zero sleep and ate a full English breakfast at 3:30 a.m. Once we got off the plane in Spain, we had no idea what to do, so we quickly latched on [View Full Entry]

Unfortunately I didn't get to see that much of Valencia, since my bus got in at 1 am, so I didn't get to the hostel until 2 so I didn't get an early start on the day and then I had to be at the airport at 3 for my flight home. Since it was a Sunday morning it was a market day, so there were lots of people walking very slowly through narrow streets, and haggling over prices... walking quickly to see more of the town was completely out of the question, so I gave up on that idea and [View Full Entry]

The locals out on a warm Sunday evening....on sand!
We left Barcelona and got into Valencia with even better weather than what we left. It was 28 degrees C, which is like 70-80 F and we were hot walking around the city. Almost forgot it´s February! We went to an art museum and watched the locals play soccer on a hot Sunday afternoon on sand fields. It was a day of walking all around the city and getting supper and late night dessert at outdoor cafes. The next day we went to a local market and then visited Valencia´s cathedral where authorities say the Holy Grail, the cup Jesus [View Full Entry]
