Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

(august 6th through 7th 2005) the 12hr bus ride was hell. though we drove through beautiful hills, and olive plantations, the time itself was exhausting to us. it was boring. even our 1/2 hr stop in a deserted town was draining. we arrived in valencia just past nine, and awaited two friends that my brother had met during his time in portugal--both of them spaniards (cristina and pilar). we decided to make this a rest stop before barcelona, but it didn't turn out that way. my brother and i decided to invite them out to dinner, as they were hosting us [View Full Entry]

Renfe (spanish train company) is as ridiculous as ever with not enough seats and then the train splitting in half and us nearly in the wrong carriage!! then finally got to dato get [View Full Entry]

Valencia, land of Oranges was a very cool city. It had a huge park in it that used to be a river, it flooded the city once upon a time so they decided to turn it into a park! The only bad thing was that we were there on a Saturday and a Sunday, and Sundays in europe are pretty much dead. Still, we managed to have a night out drinking Agua de Valencia, which is freshly squeezed orange juice, champagne and vodka, one of my favourite spanish drinks so far. We saw a traditional spanish band playing which was awesome, [View Full Entry]

I am a bit behind on my blog. I am working hard to catch up but I just posted new pictures on previous blog entries so you all can enjoy those until I get caught up. When I arrived in Valencia there were thousands of people waiting on the side of the street. I figured the Pope was going to make an appearence. I decided to find the Purple Nest hostel. I really lucked out with this hostel. It was beautiful, clean and brand new. I droppped off my stuff and headed for the supermarket. After spending a couple days in [View Full Entry]

I went to the market and picked up supplies because Id found a blender in the hostel. It was the best banana smoothie ever! Left on the busabout bus for the journey to Madrid. We hit monster traffice leaving the city. Police everywhere, bomb squad adn ambulances. They diverted the bus and it turns out a metro derailed and killed like 40 people... Once in Madrid I found my hostel, which was only a 3 person dorm with beds not bunks! Small things matter! Free internet and a kitchen was an added bonus. Went out with people from the hostel in [View Full Entry]

who knew but apparently Valencia is Spains third largest city. I spent 1 adn 3/4 hours walking down a dried up river bed turned park which went to the beach. Saw the America´s Cup adn lots of really interesting architecture. I met a guy from Templestowe in the hostel who knew some similar people which was weird, he had been working at the Living Room before he came over here. Caught up with Canberra girls Sarah and Lauren adn we went out. Spain is crazy, people are still in resturants eating at 12am and the clubs dont even open until 2am. [View Full Entry]

Off to Valencia to see the City of Science. Our hostel finally had a kitchen and you wouldn't believe how excited we were to cook pasta. Imagine, me excited about cooking!?! The markets in Valencia weren't as pretty as those in Barcelona, but they were much bigger and had more quality stuff. We bought some saffron because Spain is apparently the place to get the good stuff. Our pasta dinners and lunch sandwiches etc. were so tasty from the fresh ingredients and wonderful cheese. Our second day was spent in the City of Science. Funky architecture (unfortunately stuffy due to the [View Full Entry]

I love this state. I have only been to the capital of Valencia, which is Valencia. It´s on the Med. The centro is so small that I found myself starting in one side and by the end of the day gone completely to the opposite side. Everyone here is really friendly. They have their own dialect, Valencian, but many people here speak Castelleano or English. It´s a old city filled with young people. I was told by a grandmother that many young families have returned and the city its going through a renaissance. The centro has kept its small town feel [View Full Entry]
