Camino 5. Descanso en Oviedo

Cuando salgo del albergue está lloviendo y todo está muy oscuro. No importa que haya alerta naranja en toda Castilla y León por viento y lluvia, yo circulo, sigo para adelante.

Dejo a Joe y a los coreanos durmiendo como angelitos y me dice la chica de la recepción: "¿Pero como sales para Astorga, si está el tiempo muy mal?"
-"Que sí, que sí, que voy poco a poco y llego"
Me vuelve a repetir una señora que trabaja allí limpiando: "¿Pero como sales ahora con la bici, si hay alerta naranja?"
-"Que sí, que sí, que poco a poco llego"
Me dice el conserje:"Está el tiempo muy mal"
-"Bueno, si no llego lejos me quedaré más cerca"
Pero sí, estoy convencido de seguir para adelante a pesar de las inclemencias metereológicas, de las lluvias, de los vientos feroces; a pesar de la alerta naranja y de las recomendaciones me he pertrechado y salgo de allí montado en mi bicicleta cargado de ilusión y pesadas alforjas. Me cago en su madre.

Cuando he recorrido 300 metros paro. Doy la vuelta y regreso al albergue.
- Quisiera quedarme otra noche aquí
- Son 3€
- Gracias
- De nada

Así es la inconsistencia del ser humano, por lo menos mi inconsistencia.

Dejo todos mis bultos en la misma habitación y en la misma cama. Joe y los coreanos se están ya levantando.
Explico a Joe que he cambiado de planes. Al estar el tiempo tan desapacible he decidido quedarme otra noche más y acercarme en autobús a Oviedo para pasar el día. Siempre he oído decir que Oviedo es una ciudad muy bonita, pero nunca antes he estado allí.
Un autobús sale a las 11. Voy con Joe, pues él pronto tiene que regresar a Estados Unidos y no le da tiempo a llegar andando a Santiago de Compostela.
Él compra un billete para Ponferrada a las 10:30, con intención de tomar otro transporte que le lleve a Sarria, ya en Galicia, y caminar desde allí lo que queda de camino, unos 110 kilómetros.
Nos deseamos buena suerte y nos despedimos de nuevo.
Las nubes se han marchado, el sol ha salido y el día se presenta lleno de gloria y luminoso.

De camino a Oviedo, mirando al pantano de Luna y a los montes cantábricos nevados desde la ventanilla del autobús, luar na lubre me acompaña.

Oviedo es una ciudad muy señorial. Por unos momentos me siento como alguien de un pueblo chico que llega a una gran capital. Elegantasímas avenidas, bulevares y mastodónticos modernos edificios aún en construcción. Limpieza, elegancia y a veces espacios e infraestructuaras que me parecen de una ciudad mucho más grande. Dinero, resumiendo, lo que veo es dinero, golpes de talonario.
Y en todo este marco arquitectónico se ve algo que hasta yo me doy cuenta de que está allí. Se palpa la vieja Vetusta carca e hipócrita. Lo veo reflejado en tres señoras paseando en la calle Uria, calle en la que se encuentran muchos de los comercios más elegantes de Oviedo. Tras la lluvia de la mañana el día quedó espléndido y casi rozamos los 20 grados. Las mujeres pasean lentamente, muy estiradas y charlando. Por supuesto que eso no me llama la atención, como tampoco que se hayan pintado unos inexistentes labios ni su indudable paso por la peluquería esta mañana. Lo que me llama realmente la atención son sus abrigos de piel y sus guantes de cuero caro. Pero debe ser esto normal en esta ciudad, pues soy yo el único peatón que me giro para cerciorarme de que no son un producto de mi imaginación.
Ya dijo la limpiadora del albergue de León que cuando era ella una chavala y viajaba a Oviedo, todos le decían. "¿Pero para qué vas a Oviedo?¿A ver corbatas?"
-"En cambio Gijón es más quinqui, y Mieres, y Avilés, y Langreo, y..."- sigue diciéndome. Parece ser que se cumple la máxima que para conocer una región o un país no debes ir a su capital. Por lo menos en cuanto a política, mientras que en Oviedo barren las derechas, en las otras ciudades asturianas son las izquierdas.

Visito la ciudad, camino por las calles del centro y hago fotos a sus palacios, casas, plazas e iglesias. De vez en cuando las campanas suenan por Asturias patria querida. Siempre me resultó curioso que una canción tan regionalista llegara sea tan cantada y llegue a todos los confines del universo.

Como fabes con almejas en un menú del día y me gustan. Después, subo dando un paseo al Naranco. Bueno, en realidad no subo hasta arriba del todo del monte Naranco, me quedo en la mitad de la cuesta.

Ramiro I fue rey de Asturias durante no tanto tiempo. Sólo 8 años: del 842 al 850. Siguiendo la costumbre del joven reino, su reinado, como el de los reyes anteriores, ya comenzó con fuertes enfrentamientos. Al morir el rey Alfonso II "el casto", un hombre "puro" que no tuvo descendencia, Ramiro fue elegido rey de Asturias.
Mientras que Ramiro se encontraba fuera de Oviedo, en Galicia, ocupandose de su propio matrimonio con una muchacha de nombre Paterna, el conde Nepociano, cuñado del rey difunto, se proclamó rey de forma ilegítima. Enterado de los actos del usurpador, Ramiro juntó un ejército en Lugo y se encaminó a la batalla.
Tras ganar en Cornellana sacó los ojos a Nepociano y no le dejó ni vender cupones después.
Fue vara de la justicia por su severa administración contra rebeldes, ladrones, salteadores, magos y adivinos. Eso no impidió que los nobles Alvito y Piniolo se sublevaran sucesivamente contra él.
Pero no sólo eran los problemas internos. También tuvo que hacer frente a una flota de 70 naves normandas que se asomaron en Gijón y en Coruña.
De vez en cuando luchó además con los musulmanes, como en la mítica batalla de Clavijo. El apostol Santiago, que en ese tiempo estaba de moda pues se acababa de descubrir su tumba, se presentó en sueños al rey Ramiro cuando estaba cercado por el enemigo, y le dijo:
"...ten valor, pues yo he de venir en tu ayuda y mañana, con el poder de Dios, vencerás a toda esta muchedumbre de enemigos, por quienes te ves cercado..."
Y en plena batalla apareció Santiago montando un caballo blanco, y blandiendo espada en mano comenzó a repartir mandobles entre los perros de Alá.

Y entre batallas, administración de la justicia y aplastamiento de rebeldes, Ramiro tuvo tiempo de construirse un complejo palaciego en las faldas del monte Naranco, a 3 kilómetros de Oviedo.
Santa María del Naranco fue un palacio, y junto a él se encontrarían las perreras, los establos y otras dependencias, pues la caza era abundante en este arbolado monte.
San Miguel de Lillo fue la capilla del complejo. Una iglesia grande, de la que queda sólo un tercio, pues el resto se derrumbó tras un corrimiento de tierras.
Estos dos edificios son los ejemplos más valiosos y conocidos del arte prerrománico asturias, un arte ecléctico, herencia artística astur y visigoda con las influencias carolingias y bizantinas, clarísimo precursor del arte románico y declarado patrimonio de la humanidad por la UNESCO.
Son modestos, sencillos, pero muy bonitos, sobre todo si se piensa que tienen casi 1.200 años de antigüedad, construídos en los oscuros tiempos del la alta Edad media.

Desde las faldas del monte Naranco hay muy buena vista de Oviedo y de esta parte de Asturias, que aunque no se pueda comparar con otras partes de la región, es aún muy bonita. Se puede vislumbrar la torre de la catedral, y, ocupando media ciudad, el monstruoso palacio de congresos "Princesa Letizia", obra de Santiago Calatrava y aún en construcción.
¡Menudo bragetazo que ha metido la tía jodida!

De nuevo en el centro, entro en la catedral de San Salvador. Una catedral gótica, sí, muy bien, sus naves, bóvedas, vidrieras, capillas, bonita. Pero lo que realmente tengo ganas de ver dentro es la Cámara Santa, para la que hay que pagar una entrada. La cámara santa se remonta a los tiempos de Alfonso II el Casto, aunque esté reformada varios siglos más tarde. Por esta época se descubrió la tumba del apóstol Santiago el Mayor y peregrinos de toda Europa comenzaron a acudir a Galicia para venerar sus reliquias. Al ser la meseta castellana aún un lugar inseguro, frontera con la España musulmana, el camino primitivo serpenteaba por las costas del Cantábrico pasando por la capital de Asturias.
A esta cámara se la llama Santa, porque se guardan unas reliquias de aúpa. Tras la reja, en una arca de plata están metidos los restos de...¡Jesucristo y la virgen María! Para esnucarse. Ya se decía después de que el camino "oficial" subiera a la meseta castellanoleonesa que "quien va a Santiago y no al Salvador, visita al criado pero no al señor". Muchos peregrinos se desviaban a Oviedo entonces, pero ahora no mucha gente se debe cree que está aquí el fundador de la secta, pues la catedral y la cámara están muy tristes por vacías.
También tienen aquí metido el ¡Santo sudario!. Madre mía. Según estudios el hombre del cadáver al que envolvió tenía el pelo recogido en una coleta y peor cara que los pollos del Simago.
Entre la arca y el sudario se guardan otras joyas de la monarquía asturiana, como la cruz de los ángeles y la cruz de la victoria, que llevó Don Pelayo en la batalla de Covadonga.

Y mientras estoy dando vueltas por la catedral recibo una llamada al móvil. Es Gemma. Le había llamado antes desde San Miguel de Lillo y ya ha recogido a los niños del colegio. Quedamos en la calle Uría, en la acera del campo de San Francisco.

Ella está sonriendo al igual que Tom y Bea, que están comiendo un sandwich de jamón y queso.
Me llevan de paseo y me enseñan la tienda de la tía de doña Letizia, que antes debía ser jipi y ahora pija, o ya lo era de antes y ahora no lo oculta. El caso es que vende las mismas mierdas, pero más caras. También me enseñan la fuente donde se baña la gente cuando gana Fernando Alonso. Como les veo muy ilusionados no les digo que me parece un gilipollas.
Gemma me cuenta que aunque la gente está muy contenta con Letizia y el príncipe de Asturias, muchos ovetenses se hacen republicanos cuando vienen a la ciudad, pues se cortan muchas calles y preparan unos atascos de agárrate que hay curva.
Me invitan a una limonada y me acompañan a la estación. Tom saca su pañuelo de mocos blanco y lo ondea cuando el autobús ya ha arrancado de vuelta para León. ¡Muchas gracias por vuestra hospitalidad!

De vuelta en León y tras visitar unas tascas del barrio húmedo, regreso al albergue. Al entrar en la habitación escucho una voz que me dice: "Ah, esse siclista"
"¡Coño, Altair!"
Ahí está el brasileiro desparramado en calzoncillos sobre una cama. Me enseña su pierna ligeramente hinchada, causante de que se encuentre en ese estado.
El día antes, él y Richard habían andado de Sahagún hasta Mansilla: su segundo día seguido caminando más de 40 kilómetros. En Reliegos, el pueblo anterior a Mansilla, Altair quería parar, pues ya tenía tocada la pierna, pero Richard quería seguir, y Altair le siguió.
"Richard es un animal"
"Los alemanes suelen ser muy cadriculados"- le contesto, pensando cómo me contraba la noche anterior en Sahagún todos los nombres de los pueblos donde quería pernoctar hasta llegar a Santiago-
"Pero es muy buena persona"
"Sí, sí que lo parece"
En Mansilla esperaron varias horas sentados en la calle y pasando frío hasta que abrieron el albergue, pues la chica que lo atendía tenía que hacer esa tarde unos recados.
Esta mañana, al pasar por León, Altair se ha quedado. No podía más, y Richard ha seguido hasta Villadangos del Páramo, unos 20 kilómetros después.
"Mañana Richard va a Astorga"- me dice en portuñol.
"¡Yo también voy mañana a Astorga!"
"Si lo encuentras mañana, dale este bolígrafo que me prestó. Si no lo encuentras lo dejas en el albergue de Astorga y yo ya sabré"
"Ah, sí, cómo no"
"Yo iré un día o dos por detrás de él"
Y comenzó a pensar en alto en los albergues a los que iría a dormir, y cuando podría reencontrarse con Richard. Seguramente en Santiago.
Me percato que hay otras dos camas ocupadas en la habitación. Sus ocupantes ahora mismo no están presentes, pero han extendido todas sus cosas encima. Pregunto a Altair, y él me responde:
"Son dos chicas"
"¿De dónde son, sabes?
"Una es de Asturias y la otra es de Burgos"
"¡¿De Burgos!? ¡Que bien, una paisana!"-le digo todo ilusionado
"Pero no es bonita"

Una cosa es no ser bonita y otra es que no te coman ni los lobos. A la burgalesa la encuentro utilizando internet.
Me recuerda a la infanta Elena. No por su parecido. Sus facciones son completamente diferentes a la de los Borbones españoles, pero aún así dejan ver cómo que normal, normal no es. Cómo que le falta o le sobra algo para ser una persona corriente, que le faltan primaveras o algo. No sabría cómo decir. Quizás fue simplemente que hablaba ella sola consigo mismo todo el rato y me hizo a mi fantasear. O que me dijese cosas como:
"Si yo soy también de Burgos y no os conozco" (me trataba del vos) mirandome con desconfianza.
"Claro, en Burgos hay 200.000 personas y no las vas a conocer a todas" pienso para mis adentros. Y sigo pensando: "Por suerte yo a ti tampoco"

A ella tampoco le causo gran interés, así que nos dejamos en paz y seguimos cada uno haciendo nuestras cosas.

When I go out from the albergue it is raining and everything looks very dark. It doesn´t matter there is a weather alert because of the wind and the rain, I ride, I keep going.

When I leave the room, Joe and the Coreans are still peacefully sleeping, and the young lady at the reception desk says to me: "Are you sure you want to ride to Astorga. The weather is horribe!"
-"Oh, yes I am. I go little by little and I shall arrive"
Other lady who works there cleaning repeats me: "but why you go out with the bicycle, if there is a weather alert?"
-"Oh, because I go little by little and I shall arrive"
And the janitor would say me soon later: "The weather is horrible"
-"Yes, I know. If I can´t do it I shall stop before"
That´s right. I am convinced of riding no matter what. No matter the furious wind and the heavy rain, I will go. And I go out and I ride on my bike.

Right after I have done 300 meters I stop and turn around and back to the albergue.
-I would like to stay one more night
-It´s three euro
-Thank you
-You´re wellcome

So, that is the inconstancy of the human being, at least my own inconstancy.

I leave all my staff in the same room and on the same bed. Joe and the Coreans are getting up.
I tell Joe that I´ve changed my plan. As the weather is so unpleasant I´ve decided not to ride today and doing a daytrip to Oviedo instead. Many times I´ve heard that Oviedo was a very nice place, but I have never been there before.

My bus leaves at 11. I go there with Joe. His time is ending, and he can´t make it to Santiago walking. He buys a ticket to Ponferrada for the 10:30 bus, with the intention of catching there another one to Sarria, roughly 110 kilometers before Compostela.
We wish good luck and say goodbye again.
The clouds are gone and the sun starts shining. It looks like the rest of the day is going to be full of light and glory.

During my trip to Oviedo, while I watch the Luna damn and the Cantabrian mountains, luar na lubre keeps me company.

Oviedo is a very lordly town. For some seconds I feel like coming from a little village and arriving in a big capital. Fancy avenues, boulevards and huge modern buildings still under construction. Elegant and clean, and sometimes spaces that would be more fitting in a bigger town. Money, what I see is money, cheque hitting.
And in this architectonical frame there is something of what I realize. I can feel the old Vetusta, the old square town full of hypocrisy depicted in the XIXth century novel "La Regenta" .
I can see this enbodied in three old women slowly walking along Uria street, the main commercial street in Oviedo. After the rain in the morning the day got lovely and we are scratching the 20 degrees. Neither their stiffness or their non existent painted lips or their coiffure draw my attention. Actually what draws my attention are their fur coats and expensive leather gloves. But this must be normal under the mild Asturian temperatures, for I am the only one that turns back the head to check out if what I´ve seen is actually real.

Before, in the albergue in León a lady working there already had told me that when she was a teenager and travelled to Oviedo, her friends asked her: "Why the hell you go to Oviedo? To see ties?"
-"Gijon is more bandit instead, as well as Mieres, Langreo, Avilés..."-she continues. It looks that the non written rule that says that for knowing a region or country you shouldn´t go to its capital, is followed also in Asturias. For instance, regarding politics, Asturias goes to the left and Oviedo to the right.

I visit the town, walk the street and take pictures to palaces, houses, squares and churches. From time to time the bells of the cathedral chime the song "Asturias patria querida". A very regional song, but that has reached the furthest coins of our world. I´ve always wondered why.

I have "fabes con almejas"(=beans with clams) and I like it. Then I go uphill to the Naranco. I don´t go to the top of the hill, I stop at half of the slope.

Ramiro I was king of Asturias for not so long: only eight years, from 842 to 850. Keeping the uses of the young kingdom, his reign began in strong confrontations. When died king Alfonso II "the Chaste", a pure man who didn´t have children, Ramiro was chosen king of Asturias.
Soon after, while Ramiro was in Galicia taking care of his own marriage with a young lady name Paterna, the evil count Nepociano (Alfonso II´s brother in law), proclaimed himself as king in a spurious manner. Once Ramiro knew about the deeds of the usurper, he gathered an army and sought Nepociano to battle. Ramiro won and took out the eyes of his enemy.
He was called "rod of justice" because of his strict administration against rebells, thieves, highwaymen, wizards and fortunetellers. He didn´t avoid though two consecutive rebellions headed by nobles Alvito and Piniolo.
The problems were not only domestical, but also Ramiro had to cope with a viking 70 boat fleet menacing the Asturias coast in Gijon and Coruña. The violent encounters with the moors were neither few. One of these was the battle of Clavijo (La Rioja). The apostle St James, his tomb just been discoverd, showed up in Ramiro´s dreams and said to him: "...be strong, for I am to come tomorrow and help you, and with the power of God, you shall win over this crowds of enemies who are putting siege upon you..." and next morning in the roar of the battle St James came riding a white horse gripping a sword and start to distribute blows among the heathens.

And besides all those battles, the administration of the justice and executions of rebells, Ramiro had time to build a palace complex on the slopes of mount Naranco, 3 kilometers from Oviedo.
Santa Maria of Naranco was the palace, and next to it there were the kennels and the stables, for the game was great in these forested hills.
San Miguel of Lillo was the chapel of the complex. Of the once big church is preserved only one third, because after a landslide part of it collapsed.
These two monuments are ones of the best and better known examples of Asturian preromanesque art, an eclectic art heir of the visigothics and with Carolingian and Byzantine influences. These buildings, clear predecessors of the romanesque art, were included in the world heritage list by the UNESCO.
They are modest, simple, but quite nice, specially when thinking they are 1.200 years old, buil in the dark times of the early middle age.

From the slopes of mount Naranco there are very good views over Oviedo and this area of Asturias. Compared to other parts of Asturias is not that great, but very beautiful though. The spire of the cathedral can be seen, as well as the "Palacio de exposiciones Princesa Letizia" by Santiago Calatrava, half the size of the whole town and still under construction. I still suspect Letizia, originally from Oviedo, married to the crown prince of Spain:Prince of Asturias, just for the money and not for his mind.

Back in the center it is the time for me to enter into the Cathedral of San Salvador. A gothic cathedral with its chapels, vaults, naves, altar pieces,... yes very well, very nice. But it´s the Camara Santa(=holy chamber) the main reason for me coming here. You have to pay an entrance fee.
The chamber dates from the times of Alfonso II the chaste, though partly rebuilt some centuries later. In Alfonso´s times it was discovered the tomb of apostle St James, who supposedly brought the gospel to Hispania. After this discovery, people from the whole of Europe started to pilgrimate for worshipping the relics. As the Castilian plateau was the border with the muslim Spain, and therefore not safe, the original St James´way winded along the north coast and went through the capital of Asturias.
This chamber is called "holy" because a silver ark behind a fence contains remains of Jesuschrist! and the virgin Mary!
After the way to Santiago went up to the plateau a couple of centuries later, Oviedo was still a mayor pilgrimation center. It was said: "who goes to Santiago and not to El Salvador, visits the servant but not the lord"
Therefore, in the middle ages were not few the pilgrims who got to Oviedo from Leon, but nowadays this is not so popular, what makes me think that many don´t believe these relics being actually Jesuschrist´s: The cathedral and the chamber are empty, I have them just for myself.
They keep also here a sudarium used to cover the head of Christ after his death. After some studies it has been said that he had a ponytail.
Besides the ark and the shroud, more jewels of the old Asturian kingdom are kept behid the fence in the chamber, such as the cross of the angels and the victory cross, the very one that don Pelayo was having in his hands when he was the first Christian in Spain to win a battle against the moors. This victory in the Covadonga battle made the Christians to keep this little region in the heart of the harsh mountains of north Spain.

Still I am walking around inside the cathedral when I get a phone call. It´s Gemma. I phoned her before from San Miguel de Lillo and she has just picked up the children at school. We set calle Uría as our meeting point.

She is smiling and Tom and Bea are eating a ham and cheese sandwich. They smile too. They walk me around the center and show me the shop of princess Letizia´s aunt. She used to be hippy, but after her niece became the Princess of Asturias, she started to sell the same shit but more expensive. Bea and Tom take me to the fountain where the people bath when Fernando Alonso wins the competitions. As they seem so fond of him, I don´t tell them that I think he is a prick.
Gemma tells me that altough most of the people in town are very happy with Letizia and Felipe, prince of Asturias, they become republicans when the couple come to Oviedo, because of the traffic jams.
They drink with me a lemonade and walk together to the bus station. Tom takes a white handkerchief out of one of his pockets and waves it to me when the bus leaves taking me back to Leon. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

Back in Leon and after having some pinchos in the Barrio Húmedo I go back to the albergue. When I enter into the room I hear one voice that greets me: "the cyclist!"
-"Holy shit, Altair!"
On one of the beds he is lying almost naked. He shows me his slightly swollen leg, the reason why he is taking a rest. The day before he andRichard had walked from Sahagún to Mansilla, their second day doing more than 40 kilometers. In Reliegos, the little village before Mansilla, Altair had wanted to stop, bur Richard wouldn´t have done it, so the brazilian walked with Richard the 6 kilometers left to Mansilla.
"Richard is a beast"-he says.
"The germans are very stubborn"
"But he is a very good person"
"Yes, he seems so"
They waited there in Mansilla wet in the outside until it was dark, for the lady in charge of the albergue wouldn´t show up because she had to do thing.
This morning, when they got to Leon, Altair decided to stay and Richard to walk to Villadangos, 20 kilometers further.
"Tomorrow he is going to Astorga"- he says to me
"Me too!"
"If you happen to meet him tomorrow, please, give him this pen he borrowed me. If not, you leave it in the albergue in Astorga and I will know"
"Ok"
"I am going to be like one day or two behind him"
And then he started to think aloud about the albergues and villages he would like to stop at, and when he would be able to meet Richard again. Probably in Santiago, we conclude.

I realize there are two other beds with somebody´s staff on them. I ask Altair, and he tells me:
"They are two ladies"
"You know where are they from?"
"One is from Asturias and the other from Burgos"
"From Burgos!? What a nice surprise!"
"But she is not pretty"

I was expecting a not pretty girl, but this specimen wouldn´t be even eaten by hungry wolves. She is using the internet.
She reminds me of the Borbons, specially of princess Elena (Prince of Asturias´s elder sister, the king of Spain´s daugther). They are not very similiar, neither their face features, but you can feel that both of them are not normal people, like if they have something that doesn´t fit quite perfectly in their brains. I don´t know how to explain it. Maybe it was her keeping a conversation with herself aloud what made me feel that way about her. Or maybe it was that she asked me questions like:
"I am also from Burgos, I must say, and I do not know thou" (she spoke to me as if she was living a couple of centuries ago)
"Sure, in Burgos there are almost 200.000 unhabitants and it would be impossible for you to know them all"- I think. "Luckily neither I do know thou"

It seems that I am not of great interest to her, so we leave us alone each other and keep doing what we were doing before meeting.
