Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

Claustrophobia—it was suddenly all I could think about. The walls of the buildings were enclosing me. My 5’1 stature felt like it could reach up and touch the bottoms of the balconies without stretching. The makeshift fences littered with people were on top of me. I couldn’t make a move without bumping into a drunk. I took a deep breath to remind myself that I was only walking the route with the guys. I wasn’t dumb enough to actually run with the bulls. The 825 meters seemed forever to walk. Worst yet, being the typical American, I had absolutely no [View Full Entry]

The trip to Madrid was a general release of adrenaline after the excitement of the America's Cup, but we arrived and found our hostel and crashed. The following morning we were up early as we had extended our stay in Valencia to see the racing in lieu of 2 days in Madrid. First stop was more transport woe, as we attempted to book transport to Pamplona, and waited 2 hours to finally get it sorted. First sightseeing stop of the day was Museo del Prado, where despite the lack of a guide, we saw some amazing art, including art by [View Full Entry]

Hi My name is Vaca, I am a cow and I live in Spain. Being a cow in Spain isn't the same as being a cow in any other country in the world because every year in July the Spaniards hold the San Fermin Festival aka The Running of the Bulls. Sanfermines, held in honour of Saint Fermin, the patron saint of Pamplona and Navarre now attracts visitors from all over the world... visitors hoping to run with the bulls and survive, witness a bull fight and party all night long. Well thats all well and good. If your not a [View Full Entry]

1 town: Pamplona; 2 colours: white and red; 3 days and a whole lot of carnage! We’ve made to Pamplona for the San Fermin festival, Leah and I came prepared, and James has just brought his ‘whites’ ready for the opening festival tomorrow. We’ve met up with Leah’s friend Dan and the four of us are starting the festival the only way allowed: trying some of the local sangria, which is actually quite good! Day One of the festival - The Opening Ceremony - if you can survive today, you can survive anything! Leah and I were woken up early by [View Full Entry]

Ola Spain! Europe » Spain » Navarre » Pamplona
Arrived in the UK on the 2nd, spending a few days catching up with Bernie and Shaun in Preston before flying out to Madrid for a nine day adventure through Spain with Karen and Mick. Our first few hours in Madrid was spent trying to navigate the maze of motorways to find our caravan park. Mick did a fantastic job of driving the motorhome through heavy traffic....all on the opposite side of the road! Spain was a very pretty place with fantastic weather in the central parts. Our South East Asian body thermometers didn't really appreciate a little bit cooler weather [View Full Entry]

Provisional detour Europe » Spain » Navarre » Pamplona
Today the race begins. I got off to a flying start, leaving Kellie and Ezra behind in their beds. Sure Ezra was sick, but that wasn’t my problem. I was still convinced it was berry-induced. I headed off bright and early, deciding to walk with Louise. We’d walked all of about 50 metres when who did we run into but the Danish boys! They’d stayed in Pampalona the previous night, and had gone to see some bulls running down the street. So Louise, Frederick, August and I headed off along the camino together. It was a beautiful sunny day, and we [View Full Entry]

The next morning we begged and pleaded with the nazi-lady who managed the refuge to let us stay another night, because Ezra was still sick. We even had proof of it because a spanish girl that we'd been drinking sangria with the previous night was a doctor. But nazi-lady would not hear of it. We were kicked out of the refuge. Poor Ezra was in bad shape. We were sitting outside the albergue (another word for refuge), looking tired and miserable, and we got to chatting to a very interesting Italian journalist who was doing the camino by bike. He told [View Full Entry]

THis is Part two of my entry(see Cinque Terre, Not wheelchair accessable, sept. 1st 2006)...... Goats More Goats and Goat Herders, How we love their mustaches. How we like their cloaks and their canes. And the goat bells ring through the mountains.... The pyrenees ate my bottom bracket, the last bite that broke it. Rockies, Alps, Alpenines, all were crossed and left behind. The Pyrenees and I, we stuck together, east to west, along their southern realm. At times I was high upon their heads and then they pulled away as I slid down their rocky thighs to the bottom of [View Full Entry]

Well, I guess this is my catchup entry, for I have not written anything in almost a month. I will do my best to give a synopsis of the whirlwind that has been the last twenty-plus overstimulating days. I left the flat and happy Po River valley in Italy, which seems to be the only flat place in the country, and embarked on my largest climb by bicycle to date. Picking a backroad off of my map, I chose my path over the Alpenines to the Mediterranean. From about sea level, I climbed 8,500 feet in 40 miles to the summit [View Full Entry]
