So yesterday was a long day as well. I woke up late and that wasn't good, I ment to get up at around 10 and then head to the Royal Palace. But instead I woke up at like 12 then didn't head out till 1:30 and made it to the Reina Sofia museum at 4. In actuallity I wanted to see the Placio Real first because it closes at 4:00, but instead of taking the metro quickly there I walked. And when I walked I got lost for about half an hour. Kinda put me off schedule but I back tracked and just went to the Reina Sofia instead. The Reina Sofia is the modern muesum in Madrid, it is famous for holding Picasso's "Guiernica". Which I might add is really amazing to see. They included ... read more

Add another check to the list, I’ve taught my first and second class. My responsibilities were to cover about half the class period, so around 20 minutes, devoted to the KKK and some of the sources that were in the text. I planned to have the students go over about half of the sources in a think-pair-share activity, which actually worked well. Because so many of the students have Spanish as their first language I figured they would discuss in Spanish which is fine-I just made them accountable for their work by telling them beforehand I would call on each group. A few of the students led the discussion throughout the period and were really eager to answer and give their opinion, which was great but I just need to make sure they don’t dominate the ... read more

So last night Ana, Angel, and I had dinner here at the apartment. Ana made a good salad with corn, white asparagus, crab, tuna, and tomatoes. I liked it a lot. Then we went out to meet a few of Ana's friends from A Corona, her hometown in the north of spain. We went to a bar called La Sueca. It is translated as "The Swiss Girl" or "I'm not Listening" ha ha. Either way its pretty funny. We went out around 12 and came home around 3. A late night in Spain is 6 so we weren't out for long but its was long enough for me. After spending the day walking around Madrid it was a lot to go out, I was ready to hit the bed, but I made it out and was ... read more

Again, perk of being a 'teacher' ... Christmas vacation. And oh man did I ever need it! I stayed in Europe and spent my first week of vacation with my cousin Georgina, her boyfriend Santiago, and my good friend Dan in Malaga/Benalmadena on the Mediterranean Coast ... nothing at all wrong with that. I managed to miss my initial flight and proceeded to spend 3 very lonnnnnng hours in Terminal 4 of the Madrid Barajas airport ... good thing they've made it big enough to house many many many clothing stores, but needless to say, time ticked by very slowly. I arrived in Malaga and was swiftly picked up by my cousin and we caught up quickly and called it a night as it was late and they had work the next day. I managed to ... read more

Today was my frist day of this visit walking around Madrid. It was a lot of fun, we first walked to a tourist station to get a map and when the girl could tell I was American she asked if we wanted one in English. Of corse I said no, I am a big girl and I have to try and conqure the langague barrier. So then we went to The Prado Museao. There we covered the basic Spanish painters Goya, Velazques, and El Greco. It was nice to see all the paintings person. I got to see a few Carravajio as well. That was totally impressive. Though it is all subject matter of kings and queens and fuit. There is also the all important subject of religion which is basically the only thing classical masters ... read more

So it is my first day in Spain and I will be the first to say that I was unprepared for the culture shock. I got hit with it hard and I never expected it to be so confusing. I can get around Washington, DC perfectly fine with my eyes closed. But this city is much different. Funny story: the first thing out of customs I did was exchange dollars for eruos and man is the rate bad today. When I walked up tothe counter I obivously look American and the man said "hello" to me so I said it back. Then he asked for my passport and said "Ellen you need to speak Spanish from now on". But it was in a stern kind of teacher sort of way. That was the first time I ... read more

Buenas I am here in Madrid and will hit the one week mark this Saturday. Flying in was a pain, only because 8 hour plane rides are awful! I had a 4 hour layover in Amsterdam and ended up taking a short nap on the floor at my gate because there were no benches nearby. My flight to Madrid was short (I actually fell asleep) and I did not have any delays. Once I stepped out of the airport a taxi whisked me away to Hostal Aguilar where the other student teacher Amanda was staying. I was SO tired that I ended up going to bed right after I got in, around 9:30 or so. Although I had a full nights rest I woke up feeling like I hadn't slept a wink . Amanda and ... read more

Moi, Viimeksi taisin olla viela Portugalin puolella, kun kirjoittelin. Sielta lahdin pohjoiseen, Santiago de Compostelaan, sinne mihin pyhiinvaeltajat kàvelevat Ranskasta. Mukava pieni kite surfing -kaupunki, Afrikka nakyy toisella rannalla aurinkokin paistoi valilla tosin siellà tuulee aina, siksi kai ne siella surffaileekin... No mutta sain kuitenkin yhden biitsipaivan alle. Tarifan jalkeen pyorin viela Andaluciassa (Malaga, Granada, Cordoba), mutta sitten tuli tieto, etta filippiinilaiset matkatoverini eivat ole pitaneet kiiretta laivan lastauksessa, laiva 3 viikkoa myohassa! Oli pakko aloittaa... read more
