I arrived in Madrid on Sunday January 27, 2008 at 10am. After flying for nearly 8 hours, I was glad to be back on the ground. In Madrid, we met as a group and got to know each other and our ISA directors. We also toured the city and visted the Museo Reina Sofia, where we saw work from Picasso and Salvador Dali, and the royal palace, Palacio Real. I also had my first experience with the famous Spanish dish, Paella. Paella consists of a mixture of Spanish rice, clams, shrimp, chicken, crawfish, beef, pork, muscles, rabbit, octupus, okra, beans, spices, and other meats and vegetables. To be such a melting pot of tastes, it is actually a very tasty and filling meal. The city of Madrid is a massive, modern place with and old world ... read more

They say that Madrid is a relatively safe place to live. You might be the victim of a pick-pocketing, but no one is going to seriously maim you for your metro pass or anything. If you would have asked me last week if I´d agree completely. The only danger I´d been subjected to as of then was my own clumsiness, mainly while cooking (I don´t think I have any feeling left in my fingers). Not that I was going for a run in back alleys at night or anything, but still. Safe. Until Friday happened. On Friday, I was the victim of a serious and unforgivable crime. And it wasn´t really what was taken from me that bothered me, but rather the wounds I´ve been forced to go in public with in the aftermath. Because, you ... read more

I would like to prompt my first blog with a warning that it is the product of a drunken rant at about 730 am and edited in my hungover state sometime thereafter... It is weird to say that in the days before I left for Madrid it almost seemed surreal to me, but that was entirely the case. Often times friends and family would question whether or not I was excited or prepared for the upcoming semester in Spain; my final semester of my undergraduate degree; and I was not even sure of that fact myself. Needless to say, Chris and I somehow got our act together, and in a week that consisted of last-minute-shopping, insurance companies unwilling to comply with abroad requests, parents, and just overall stress in general, we found ourselves on a plane ... read more

Hey everyone! Hope you are all doing good! I have been super busy over here, so I guess I will fill you in on what has been going on! We got to Madrid at like 10:30 in the morning on Sunday, and the ISA directors met us in the airport. So, if you all want to know how weak the dollar is right now I exchanged money in that airport in Madrid and I gave them $46 and I got 29 euros back. How stupid is that?! Anyways, after we got here we went to the hotel and took showers and naps for awhile and later that night we went and had a bus tour of the city. I couldnt take picture thoguh because the falsh reflected off the windows and it was dark out. But ... read more

Menin viimeisten joukossa koneeseen, eikä virkailija ollut ensin hyväksyä Suomessa tulostamaani check in -varausta, vaikka siinä näkyi selkeästi paikkani 30L. Kun pääsin paikalle, vierustoveri totesi heti espanjaksi: 'Usted viaja solo?' Hän ehdotti että vaihtaisimm... read more

Lar Gorn to Thailand.....TTFN to England.....Hola to Spain! (I'm so multilingual....) So then. South East Asia.... England.... and now Spain. In a single month of December we'd had our fill of English weather and were back on the road to the land of tapas, bullfighting, flamenco, guitars, tacky package holidays and men in big hats. Yes. Spain. I'd have titled this blog "Viva Espana" but I initially thought it had probably been done to death...and apparently it also has fascist connotations....so I went for the Ricky Martin classic - "Living La Vida Loca". He's not even Spanish. And he's crap. Aw well... We decided on Spain after Thailand for a number of reasons. One, it's nearer home. Thailand is so far away it's almost impossible to get to England for a visit. For a start it ... read more

We´re back, and checked into the first place we wanted to stay (but didn´t). This place, Cat´s Hostal, has free internet, but no USB so no pictures (SORRY!) maybe later tonight. Yesterday we went to see the Modern Art of spain, and saw Pablo´s masterpeice Guernica. The painting seethed and seemed to scream, and there´s no place to rest your eyes. There was also Dali. We stayed at a wonderful hostel run by an elderly couple but right now it´s off to lunch. Caio! ... read more

Hi everyone, Another day we spend in Madrid. We are planning to go visit the Museum of Naval History, to learn about the Armada, and the Bullfighting Arena. Last night we finished our day with Churros con Chocolatè. The hot chocolate is different: imagine a piping hot unsweet chocolate pudding made with skim milk to dip crispy doughnuts into! Jon also ended the night with a sip from a bottle of 2 euro red wine. imagine that!! where can you get a bottle of red winefor $3 and it taste delicious (and not in a box)? This is it for right now. Tune in next time for another adventure in Spain . ... read more

España is lovely! Yesterday we tromped through the streets and found a place to stay, clean and affordable. First, we slept. Then we ate, and slept some more. So far our favorite restaurants have names like ¨"Museum of Ham" and "Paradise of Ham". Standing at the bar, you can have a dollar half pint of beer with a free tapas of sausage and bread. We splurged on a plate of Iberico ham, delicious. Today we went to the old Royal Palace and jardines de real retiero (a big park). ... read more
