I am going to warn all of you ahead of time, this blog is going to be a long one. This past weekend was a long weekend, and I spent it in Madrid. I had a really great time. Sallie and I flew in to Madrid Friday night, and checked into our hostel. We were trying to meet up with Furman friends who were on their study abroad program there, but had some difficulties contacting each other at first. Eventually, my friend Matt (Krantz for all of you at Furman who may know him) got a hold of us and took us to eat in a Restaurant called “Museo de Jamon,” which literally translates into “Museum of Ham.” Its basically a Spanish chain of restaurants, that serves lots of ham (ham is really popular in Madrid). ... read more

It was a beautiful cool day here in Madrid. We started the morning bright and early for breakfast, although Faye and Bill both had trouble sleeping last night. Probably was the time change (or the giant cup of super coffee ice cream Bill had just before bed). The dogs in the picture looked like Faye and Bill early this morning! We spent the entire morning at the famous Sunday Morning Flea Market. They had everything from schlock to really nice hand made sweaters. Also some nice jewelry - that’s what Renee and Faye are shopping for (hope you like it Lindsey!). We then had a great lunch at a sidewalk café and then toured all around Madrid on an open bus tour. It was pretty brisk near sunset! For dinner we tried the Spanish Restaurant we ... read more

After a long night with frequent delays due to weather up and down the US East Coast, we arrived safely in Madrid about 2 hours behind schedule. Our plane was probably the smallest plane we have ever flown on an international flight a 757 configured 3 & 3. However, we all had aisle seats and after a quick dinner we all fell asleep for 4 or 5 hours before awakening at noon Spain time which is 6 AM East Coast time. We landed around 1:30 and went straight to our hotel. Hotel Europa is a beautiful small hotel right on one of the busiest squares in Madrid. Right outside the door our lots of sidewalk cafes, shops and restaurants. The weather is beautiful ... about 70 by day and in the 50´s at night but near ... read more

Because I expressed so much interest in the LAST bullfight, my friends got me tickets to another. I got to see a Puerta Grande, or a Grand Exit. The bullfighter was so good that he was carried out of the arena on the arms of the crowd. Its hard to describe a good bullfight from a bad one. Even though they do the same thing in every bullfight, some are terribly boring. The bullfighter´s job is to train the bull to see only the flag and to continue moving smoothly around the bullfighter. Eventually, if the bullfighter has done his job right, he can actually get to within an inch of the bull and get the bull to go behind his back and sides to follow the flag. In a bad bullfight, the bull stops and ... read more

Well, here I am, my last day in Spain. Yesterday I took the bus from Barcelona to Madrid and arrived here early evening. I went to the supermarket and picked up a few things to make pasta with, and came back and cooked at the hostel. While I was sitting eating dinner I met a lot of people who are staying at the hostel, and talked with them until lights out at 11pm. I have met so many interesting people here, last night I met a funeral director from New Zealand! So today I went to two museums, which was a lot, but I had the tickets already so... First I went to the Museo Thyssen... something, it´s a long name. I really like it, had a great variety of art from the middle ages to ... read more

I went and saw an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G movie tonight at the cinema. It was called "El orfanato" which means The Orphanage in English. I think it's coming out in December in the USA. It was a freaky horror movie by the guy who made Pan's Laberinth, but it wasn't like the typical horror movie I'm used to in America. This movie actually had a really powerful meaning, and I actually felt moved at the end. I would tell you all about it, but I wouldn't want to spoil anything. Life here couldn't be better. I am working, paying rent, reading every day, and experiencing Europe in a very unique way. Living in the USA your whole life is like living in a fishbowl: to a fish the tank seems great, but to the observer there is so ... read more

Improvise has become the catch phrase of the past week. It's gone by in such a blur. Improvising has been a lot of fun though; Txe, Nikki, and I have used it for meals, plans, transportation, trips, work, you name it. It makes things a lot more interesting and more adventurous and will remain the theme for a while I suppose. This past weekend Txe went home to the Basque country and Nikki and I spent time with friends from her program. Saturday we ate lunch at this place called Maoz which is a serious competitor for Sprouts ... great messy falafels that we had, quite filling. yum. We later did some 'shopping' but it was more like browsing as I restrained myself from buying this dress I find fantastic for both Halloween and my birthday ... read more

Phew I made it to europe! i really dont believe it, and i think i should be congratulated.. sth america ´is so easy these days´ they said, ´its safe and friendly´ they said. Who said? no compadre of lachlan lindsay pagan, thats for sure. Haha.. perhaps im being dramatic but the bolivia and peru definately tested patience, perseverence and will power alot.. its beautiful but nonetheless the poverty and hate and fear and loathing all seep in, even thru my thick watertight hippie shell. SO! madrid, im here and it is superb. my bags arrived fine, my guitar was in one piece (gasp) and so was i. meeting erin (she is my manager from the exeter for those uninformend..) at the airport was not what i thought, since there are 2 more airport terminals there than ... read more

Well, tomorrow I head out to Barcelona. I am taking the bus, it will probably take about 7-8 hours. I should be in Barcelona tomorrow evening. The past few days in Madrid have been busy. Yesterday I walked around a lot, as usual. I went back to the parque del buen retiro, and went to look at the statue of the fallen angel, one of the few statues of the devil in the world. It was quite interesting and it made me wonder why it had been put in the park... I´ll have to look that up later. Later in the evening I went out with some friends from the hostel, we had cervezas, tapas, and good conversation. It was a large group from the hostel, and very fun and interesting to talk to people from ... read more
