LLEIDA to SITGES 13th May 2007 (Sunday - Hazy 23º)
With an eye on the rear mirror we cruise the next 200 kms towards Barcelona and are amazed at the thousands (yes thousands) of wind turbines that dot the landscape. They are everywhere. In paddocks and fields and along every ridge as far as the eye can see. I am impressed with this VERY serious attempt to use an alternative means of energy production but the visual pollution is a big drawback. Wind Farms account for over a quarter of Spain’s electricity generation.
Once again we avoid the big city and head to a little place just south of Barca. It is called Sitges and is a resort town popular with English Tourists and as we soon find out…Gay Couples…of the male variety. We park near the Tourist Information Bureau at 2:05pm to find that it closed at 2:00pm - what have we done to offend these people??
Wander off in a huff to find our own Accommodation without the help of the TIB. Who needs them anyway? Go ahead close at 2:00pm - see if we care! Its not as though we are Tourists needing Information from
a Bureau or anything like that!!!!
We settle on the Platjadour Hotel right on the main beach. Check in and park the car in a not too distant side street.
Feeling pretty loose goose we stroll into a Bar on the beach front across the way and order up. San Miguel Beer for me and a Vodka, Soda and Lime for Deb. The waiter is an Asian born Spaniard in the style of “Manwell” from Faulty Towers. After three unsuccessful attempts he finally appears with my beer and Deb’s vodka - the latter being the largest mixed drink ever poured. The glass is ‘schooneresk’ in its proportions and has at least 6 nips of vodka lurking in its depths. We nurse these and watch the Spanish Families out enjoying their Sunday.
The Santa Maria seafood restaurant has the pleasure of our company tonight and it is not too shabby. Calamari followed by seafood Paella accompanied by a nice bottle of white wine.
Back to the Platjadour and coma like sleep with dreams of Vodkas the size of Volkswagens.
