Monistrol de Montserrat Travel Blogs

Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

Friday 24th July - Barcelona - Central Catalonia Barcelona traffic was pretty dire so I was hoping this trip up to Parc Guell with me sat melting in the heat would be worth it. Was it? No. And worse I had to lug all the bungeed luggage round the park, due to the constant threat of theft of anything not bolted down. So I absolutely fried. The trousers were designed to be summer trousers so what muppet in the Hein Gericke design department decided on black as a color? Call me a philistine but I just didn't see the appeal in [View Full Entry]

We had to get going about an hour earlier this morning to make sure that we were at the bus stop in time to purchase our tour to Montserrat. We arrived at the bus stop at about 9.10am and the bus selling the tickets for tours to Montserrat and Barcelona arrived at about 9.20am. After we bought our tickets there was a considerable amount of radioing and telephoning as the Plana staff worked out how many people they had going on tours today. Eventually there were three busses for Montserrat, but it was an absolute shemozzle getting everyone boarded. The staff [View Full Entry]

Well as most of the CELTYL lot took their flights home or moved on to travelling elsewhere Francesca and I found ourselves the only two left in Barcelona. We'd made plans to visit the monastery at Monserrat today so I was up early making a packed lunch and heading off to meet Francesca by the metro stop. We reached Placa d'Espanya where we could supposedly get a train to the monastery. We found the trip was made very simple for us by the tourist stands offering an inclusive ticket for the train and cable car. We were handed our tickets, timetable [View Full Entry]

Unfortunately, my camera died before we toured the monastery - I'll steal some of my friends' pics soon so you guys can all check it out, it was really amazing. In the mean time, hope you like landscapes and pictures of rocks. The pictures really don't do it justice. The mountain is a 45 minute train ride from Barcelona, and from the top we could easily see the whole city and the coastline. I have a 360 movie I'll post up soon as well. Disfrute! (Enjoy!) Here are some GORGEOUS pictures from Montserrat. They don't even do it justice, but look anyway. Side note: I started classes this week and my head is pounding. Taking grammar classes in spanish is MUCH, and I mean, MUCCHHHHH different than taking regular classes in spanish. For six hours straight I am translating as fast as my brain allows, which is not very fast..... at this rate, I'm hoping for Cs in each course. (which by the way of average... having an A or 10 is considered publishable work. unreal, right?, a 9 is way up there as well, and 8 [View Full Entry]

Buenos Dias! We are in Spain! Barcelona to be more precise. We woke up this morning as the ship was pulling into the docks in Barcelona. And although the city is known for its architecture, food, history and food (did I already mention that?) - we decided that once again we would venture down our own path and leave the city. Gasp! We hopped on a bus (more on the incredible rudeness of Europeans later), then a metro, then a train, then a tram (cremallera) and finally arrived at our destination - Montserrat! Montserrat is about an hour northwest of Barcelona [View Full Entry]
