This will be short and sweet, to make up for the last one...sorry about that...I got carried away with our last day... Saturday, Sept 29, 2012 - Took off this AM for Girona in Spain for two nights, and ran into torrential rains about half way there. This did not bode well if it continued….but a little enforced down-time wouldn’t go amiss. With the rain stopped in the evening, we decided to go out for Mexican - yep, you got that right…in Spain - food, and found a highly rated (by TripAdvisor) place in the old town. We made reservations for 8:30 PM, which is about the earliest any of the restaurants open for dinner. We had guacamole as a started, which was VERY good - lots of lemon juice used. For our mains, I had blue corn tostadas with chicken and Kevin had beef fajitas. I have to say that Kevin’s dinner was not that hot, and pretty devoid of flavor. My tostadas were very nice, with a bit of a smoky flavor, which, explained to me, was chipotle peppers. But Kevin said it was a bit “cafeteria” and not what we were hoping for.

An iconic shot of Girona
I have seen this as a quilt, done by 5 women. At least, I THINK it was this town... September 30, 2012 - After a hotel breakfast, we took off walking to the Old Town, and it was needed after the last couple of days of inactivity. We went to the Coll, the medieval Jewish area of the town, next to the cathedral. There was a large Jewish population in Girona until 1492, when they were expelled during the Inquisiton. The museum was very extensive in the history of the area, and well documented for the four major languages. We also surprised at the number of Catalan flags flying off of balconies. This state is wanting independence from Spain AND the EU, and the dissenters are very vocal about it. The first language is Catalan, and they look at me funny when I speak my Mexican Spanish. English is very well accepted here, so it’s not worth trying to speak Spanish, which is fine with me. After walking around for some more time, we settled on a little restaurant for a late (2:30) lunch. Kevin had escargot (20 of them) with a lovely chili-based sauce, and I had a gazpacho that was as good as mine, made even better by the fact I didn’t have to make it! It
Wisteria growing
Lots of wire used to train these three bushes. They stand over 20 feet high, with crosswires. I bet it is beautiful when they are blooming! only missed the chopped bits, but it had a beautiful flavor. Then Kevin had a Valencia paella, with shrimp, cockles and beef, and I had a Catalan sausage, white beans and French fries. The rice of the paella was very tasty, although a little salty, so I can give it a thumbs-up. I loved my sausage. It wasn’t spicy but had a good flavor, and the white beans weren’t bland at all, being cooked with bacon lardoons. The name of the restaurant is “La Forca Vella” at La Forca, #4. Lunch only cost 11.50 Euros each. Highly recommended! After walking our lunch off back to the hotel, we settled in for the evening…Up and on the road to Barcelona for five days tomorrow morning! Adios!
