Land Ho – The new World
April 20
th - Barcelona
We arrived in Barcelona Sunday morning with a big bump against the dock. I think that was our wakeup call. I roll over and Kirsten is just out of bed, I think we just ran ashore. Yeah, at least it was land. LOL
We’re up, packed and ready, our departure time is 9:30ish. We go to the Lido Deck and have one last Holland American breakfast.
Around 9:30 we depart the ship. We go through passport control and find our luggage.
We work our way to the taxi; when it’s our time, we pile into the clown car with our luggage. Off to the airport we go, Opa is in the co-pilot seat giving directions. Yes, the taxi driver and Opa are discussing the finer points of Barcelona and how to get to the airport. I think they actually understand each other.
He drops us off at Terminal 2 at the car rental counter. How much smoother can this possibly be? Kirsten walks up to the counter and after a few moments of her kitchen Spanish she find
out the car is at Terminal 1, we are at Terminal 2.
Kirsten goes into crisis mode; she starts barking orders like she’s running the Help Desk. There’s just one problem Opa, Oma and I are the ones she talking to. She says I’ll go and get the car you take care of momma and Daddy. I have a better idea… you stay here and I go and get the car. Kirsten reminds me the car is in her name…#$%^&.
I won’t let that happen again. We wave as Kirsten skips away singing some jingle.
Kirsten returns with the car in about 30 minutes. We finish our cup of coffee and load the car with all our stuff. We have a WolksVagan. That’s how Omi and the Germans pronounce it.
We are on the road. Well at least were heading west out of Barcelona toward LLEIDA to spend the night.
As were coming into LLEIDA, Hedy see and ALDI, she is so excited. Yes the ALDI looks just like the ones in Germany & Orlando. Go figure.
We then see a billboard
advertising an IBIS Budget for $35 euros. Hedy got so excited she squealed! Kirsten hits the brakes, momma! Don’t do that.
Ok, we find the Ibis and yes it is $35 Euros. The problem here is I will not be able to find another hotel for $35 a night and my lying that it only cost $35 Euros or less will never fly.
Basically I’m screwed.
We spent the night in LLEIDA, they have a big and very old Cathedral. As were buying our entrance tickets Omi asks clerk do they still hold mass here? The clerk looks at me I try not to make eye contact and he responds with a slow
“No Senoria”.
After visiting the cathedral Omi & I walk down and find Kirsten and Opa.
From here we are all getting pretty hungry; well it’s Easter Sunday and all restaurants shop and groceries including ALDI are closed. Kirsten finds us an open restaurant, we are the only guests and he somehow pulls together a somewhat tasty meal.
After dinner we walk around a few blocks but everything is closed
up tight. We head back to the IBIS and sit in the dining room and play cards and share one of their “Meal of the Day”.
Well it’s pushing 9PM and everyone is ready for a good night sleep. Well everyone but Kirsten, she knows the bed is HARD.
Good night. More Blogs to come.
