Building
Everything is at odd angles including the columns We flew into Barcelona from Sevilla pretty late at night, we were groggy and ready for a peaceful night sleep. We got into the hostel at about 2am, the night guard showed us to our room and we were out. A merely 5 hours later, we were rudely awakened by what sounded like a million school children running up and down the hall screaming... you can imagine how happy we were with that. There was no point in sleeping anymore because even the sound of our music turned up as loud as possible couldn't drown out their noise. We got up, got ready and set out to see Barcelona in the day light, first things first, we of course needed a coffee. We walked around for a bit just taking in the sights. We caught the metro into the City Center and saw a few of Gaudi’s buildings, which were absolutely AMAZING and stopped alongside the other tourists for a few photos. We then decided it would be interesting to go to their zoo so we headed to the sea side where the zoo was located. On our walk there we stumble upon this crazy market that had all sorts of
Design on the ceiling
Made from plates and cups handmade crafts from jewelry, cloths, soaps to food such as falafel, cheese, meats, bread, mohitos and so much more! We just walked around, listening to the music and looking at all it had to offer. We have some pretty cool photos of it.
Later in the week we met up with Corey and Maddy (our friends we made in Lagos) to go see the Park that Gaudi had designed. This place was amazing!! All his work has curves, there are no 90 degree angles. He uses a bunch of recycled materials for the roof and designs. There was a section that resembled a wave crashing over or roots coming up from the ground (we had a disagreement of what we thought it looked like). There were two buildings that also looked like something out of a Dr. Suess book. Each building was made from broken cups, plates or anything else that he found. That house that Gaudi lived in also resided on this property. There was a large circular area that was at the top of the hill where there was this jazzy, ska, reggae music group that was playing and were really good! Rachael ended up buying a
CD by them. We then walked to the very top part of the park and were able to look out over the city and see Sagrada Familia. This building was absolutely amazing! He had just started it when he passed away so it is a work in progress but I’m pretty sure it will take a lot of time before it is finished. There are the four towers that you see when you look at it and then there will be a fifth tower that goes in the middle that is a little over 700 meters tall (no taller because he didn’t want to create anything taller than what God created) and the tallest mountain in the area is just under 800 meters tall. The front of the building (church) is supose to represent Jesus’s birth which a bunch of cheerful statues and objects around where as the other side is suppose to represent his death. It was unbelievable. We then went out to this restaurant that was recommended to us by a local which was pretty good, had dinner and a few glasses of wine and said our goodbyes to Maddy and Corey.
Our last full day in
Barcelona we decided to walk down Le Ramble (which is the main street of Barcelona). We saw all the street performers and of course a lot of people watching. We found this really interesting market off one of the side streets. It had all fresh fruits, meats, fish, nuts, gelato, and veggies. We tasted a few new things, some of which I can’t remember the names but there are some pictures of it so you might now. After that we just wandered around the city.
Well Spain was fun, now we’re off to France to work on the farm!
