with my host family
julie, fernando and alba On Friday after I finished my program, Lisa, my friends Christina, Lisa, Monica and I made our way to Barcelona. We left around 4 pm, shortly after my last “almuerzo” (the main meal of the day, served at lunch time which is around 2:30) with my family and Lisa. She was definitely nervous about the meal in my house, but I promised her it would be great - and it was! We had chicken and some awesome patatas and gazpacho (a thick vegetable broth served cold). We arrived in Barcelona via train at 10:30 pm, and took a taxi to the hotel about 10 minutes from center city Barca. We met up with Monica and my other friend Lisa at the hotel (they took a plane). We grabbed some dinner and walked around the city for a bit and met up with other friends who were also traveling in Barcelona this weekend.
On Saturday, we slept in - for the second time since I’ve been in Spain! We figured out the public transportation and took a bus and then a train to a beautiful beach outside the city, Sitges. After spending the afternoon tanning and swimming in the Mediterranean, we
split a couple pizzas and headed back to the hotel. Saturday night we took advantage of the incredible night life Barcelona has to offer and celebrated my last night with friends from my program. Luckily, it won’t really be the last night! We have plans to meet up with my friend Christina in Rome on Friday and my friend Ian in London in a few weeks. All the girls I went to Barcelona with also go to PSU and we will get to see each other then as well!
Sunday we woke up early and walked to the Park Guell. It is a park designed by Guadi with gorgeous flowing architecture, brightly colored intricate tiled ceilings, statutes, and walkways. His architecture was based off the movement of the waves of the ocean, and there were beautiful views from the park of the ocean and the city. Since we were leaving early Monday morning, we only had Sunday to sight see and decided to invest in a double decker tour bus complete with ENGLISH commentary and advice on what activities to do at each stop. You could get on and off as you pleased for the entire day (we even
plaza de espana
still in sevilla used the tour bus to save money on bus and taxi fare later that evening). We saw pretty much the entire city, including the F.C. Barcelona futbol stadium, the ports and World Trade Center of Barcelona (shaped like a boat near the port), the Olympic stadium and other buildings associated with the ’92 Olympics, La Pedrera (a very famous Gaudi building). We even took a cable car up to the Teleferic de Montjuic for amazing ocean and city views. We saw the very famous Sagrada Familia (a very modern church that was Gaudi’s life focus. When he died, the construction was still very much underway. Construction has continued at a slow but steady rate for over 40 years funded by anonymous donations and tour profits.) We ended the night with dinner on the main avenue of Las Ramblas, famous for its shopping and street performers. Monday morning we woke up early, headed to the train station and made our way to Nice, France.
