Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

Hola a todos! I went to Salamanca for this past Halloween weekend where I met up with six other auxiliares in my program. Five of them are working at schools in Palencia capital and one is working in the Basque Country (in Vitoria). I had met most of them at my orientation in Madrid and had visited one (my friend Brooke) in Valladolid the weekend before (she is living in Valladolid, a much larger city, and commutes to Palencia for work.) Salamanca is known as Castilla y Leon's most beautiful city and it is one of its liveliest as well due [View Full Entry]

Salamanca - September 13 The following day we made the journey to Salamanca, first by metro and then by coach. Salamanca is a university town and is known for speaking the purist Spanish (and therefore gets language students from around the world). We arrived there during their week long festivities for their Saints day. There were food stalls and bands playing in the square that created a lively atmosphere. We wandered the streets of this town and visited the House of Shells which is actually a place that pilgrims would come to stay on their 1000km pilgramage through France an [View Full Entry]

Salamanca Right-o we are in Salamanca on the recommendation of Alejandro and again we’ve come across another very majestic city. Salamanca is a University Town and the oldest Uni in Spain is located here. Like all Spanish town/cities it has a Plaza Mayor the here you seem to gravitate towards it without trying. Walking around the afternoon we arrive to get some sort of orientation and we kept ending up in the Plaza Mayor. Down a couple of streets here and there and suddenly Plaza Mayor is in front of you. Walk the other way a few turns here and there [View Full Entry]

Spain is almost like a vacation from my vacation... First of all, I´m sitting in my hotel room with a computer connected to the internet. That itself is amazing (given that I didn´t bring a laptop). The room is also only 40 euros, if I heard them correctly of course. So I´m catching up on some blogging. I met Scott in the Madrid airport 3 weeks ago. The plan was to head to Toledo from the airport for some small(er) town relaxation first since he´s jetlagged and post-oral boards. First impression - Spain is like America. Remember that I´ve said everywhere [View Full Entry]

Sorry to keep you all waiting, but I am FINALLY able to sit down and take some time to write my first blog while here in Salamanca! We have been so busy getting settled into our apartments, the area, and our school...and so far so good! :) The only problem is that the internet is a lot slower here and I don´t have as much access to it as I do back home. Therefore, I probably won´t be able to blog as much as I had hoped! Maybe I can come up with a way to make the blogging process faster [View Full Entry]

This weekend I went to Ciudad Rodrigo with a few girls that are in the Hispanic Studies Program with me, Julliete, Mariko, and Sarah(Sister it seems like you are following me around everywhere in Spain, I think I've met four different Sara's here!) Ciudad Rodrigo is about an hour South of Salamanca, and normally has nothing exciting but an old wall that surrounds the city and a cathedral. However this weekend was La Carnaval de Toro, which actually dates back to the 1500's when Los Reyes Católicos were alive and is considered one of the oldest and most unique carnivals in [View Full Entry]

On Thursday night I went to a performance of traditional dance. It was cool because Spanish dance is much more than Flamenco, which comes from the south. Up north there is actually a lot of Celtic influence- for example, one style of dance is accompanied by bagpipes! It was great to see all of the traditional costumes. For some of the dances there was a full band (8 or so men on Spanish guitar, bass, percussion, etc.) and female singers. The baile started at 8:30 pm and the intermission was at 10 pm which was a lot later than we thought [View Full Entry]

I literally just found the best ¨Churreria¨in the entire world. My friend Kelli and I had 8 churros for 1 euro! haha. They were small I swear. I love finding little secret, hidden places in a city that I´m visiting. Its so fun to actually feel like I am a part of this society, to get to know the streets, to wake up and realize that I have been dreaming in spanish (ok... very simple spanish, but you get my point). School is pretty easy. I am understanding almost everything in Spanish but I still am learning how to be able [View Full Entry]
