ALGICIRAS-RONDA TRAINI was impressed by the punctuality, and the cleanliness of the carriages. Clear windows, and spotless floors, and no signs of discarded coffee cups or papers.
RONDA TRAIN I awoke at 7:am took a quick shower, packed my backpack and quietly stole down the stairs
of the Canon Hotel in Gibraltar. In the half light I walked down Main street and then turned north to the marine road where I waited along with the morning commuters for the bus. They run every 15 minutes,
and I was soon on board heading for the La Linea Border of Spain. At the border, and armed with my British passport I crossed into Spain and hiked over to the La Linea bus station, only 15 minutes away.
I brought a few snacks with me and ate breakfast en route to Algeciras train station, about a 45 minute
journey. The bus stopped about a block from the station. I caught the 12:30 train to Ronda, a hill
village famous for its ceramic pottery its spectacular stone bridge, and its ancient bullring.
The train was relatively empty of passengers, giving me a pick of seats. As we pulled out of Algeciras station exactly at 12:30 I was impressed with the cleanliness of the carriage; spotless windows,
immaculate floors, and seats unblemished by the stains of discarded coffee cups. I always relax on trains.
Something to do with being insulated and enveloped in a kind of rolling cocoon with windows and having the world revealed to me in a collage of landscapes scrolling by my window like the illustrated pages of National Geographic. Its a form of reading and reading always relaxes me.
