Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

Europe 2008 - Day 7

 Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada
Hello Everyone, This is just a quick one since we are leaving in about 15 minutes to run to catch the overnight - hotel train to Valencia. We arrive at 5 am and will spend one night there. To recap yesterday, we woke up really early and ran to the Alhambra (major tourist attraction) to see if we would be able to get in without a ticket. We actually ran up the hill, thinking we would beat the crowd, arrived breathless to saw a huge line up. Not wanting to waste our day in line, especially with the possibility of not [View Full Entry]

Lately, I have had a dark, ominous, dense rain cloud hovering over my head. Only mine, because it is so sunny and warm here. (the cloud has only been there the past few days, I am not going to lie) Similar to those clouds in cartoons that follow people around. Really pessimistic-like. Actually, this cloud only follows me when I think about it, or take notice of it. Acknowledging the existence of said cloud is easy to do. It seems that all of my conversations have to do with the end of the world, how could we have elected our president [View Full Entry]

Europe 2008 - Day 6

 Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada
Ola Everybody Even though it has been really convenient to have computers in the hostels we have been staying in, they are so slow! making it difficult to upload pictures, etc. Our second day in Spain was spent walking through more gardens and visiting the Alcazar palace. It was really beautiful dating back to the 7th century. Very interesting with all of the different influences on the architecture, detailed hand carvings in the doors and walls. Outside in the beautiful gardens, Chris was pooed on by a duck flying overhead. We took some great pictures of this and Im glad it [View Full Entry]

In Granada, you see lots of art on the walls. I guess there is a difference between styles of grafitti but it gives you a lot to think about, or to at least let pass through your stream of conciousness while you are walking. For example, a picture of a girl playing the violin to me, is different that an angst filled tag such as "Harta de bolonia" (Full of Bolonga.) It is fun to explore these places. And to appreciate many of them on the bus ride to school, or the walking to and fro. It is also inspiring. So [View Full Entry]

Did bob see the girl who was in the room while he was outside? Or was he in the room with the girl when he saw her? Before I left, one of my biggest fears was not being able to communicate effectively. Or rather, being able to communicate but still being able to be me! Because some of the things I say in english just would make no sense at all in spanish. Now, I feel like I have lost the ability to understand ambiguity. I realized how vague I was when speaking in english because it is so easy to [View Full Entry]

Granada

 Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada
I recently flew solo for a weekend getaway to Granada, and I have to say it was one of the best things I’ve done for myself here. I have always wanted to see the famous Alhambra and have heard tons of great things about Granada, so with only two weeks left in Spain, I had to go! The hostel I stayed at was centrally located, right next to the path leading up to La Alhambra and next to the most central plaza in town, Plaza Nuevo. Nearly everyone in the hostel had come solo from all parts around the globe. There [View Full Entry]

A room with a view

 Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada
When the hostel owner handed over the keys to our room and directed us to go up, up the stairs, above everything else, we didn't think twice. Four flights later, having discovered that room 402 was not in fact on the top floor, Erin Cochran and I exchanged puzzled looks and directed our attention up the stairs to the only remaining option: the roof. Now it must be said that all guests, pleasant as they may be, generate a certain level of pressure for their hosts. Pressure to entertain them, pressure to dazzle them with tasty local fare, pressure to introduce [View Full Entry]

When I first arrived in Granada, I was in what THEY call the 'honeymoon phase' and once I woke up a few days later it was over. Yes, this is true. While I was excited, ecstatic, enamoured, nervous, lukewarm-ed-ly shy, mildly outgoing etc. I was also very alone and living life right out of a Gabriel Garcia Marquez book. Namely, 100 Years of Solitude (which is fantastic and everyone should read it). That is right, I was also in a place of solitude. How did I cope with this feeling? I walked over to a 'famous' street called Cuesta de Gomerez. [View Full Entry]

Someday, I will be the master of my own nerves. Someday, hopefully soon I will be able to sing in front of everyone and anyone. Someday my my fingers will be able to do what I know they are capable of, in spite of the fact that I know I am shaking and my face is beet red. I will have to get over whatever it is that I have been under. And pronto. Because I will be playing guitar and attempting to sing for the foreign exchange student talent show. "La Noche Mexicana" (Mexican Night) was the highlight of my [View Full Entry]

Part Two

 Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada
Hello Again! (Yay for free internet!) I will now record the second half of my trip, which wasnt nearly as exciting as the first part, thank goodness. Still, some more interesting luck managed to sneak its way in. Once we got back into Kruger we spent 2 days driving from the very northern part of it to the very southern part, seeing some game we hadnt before so that was cool. Then it was time to re-enter Mozambique, at a MUCH busier border---we waited in an intensely crowded room which had giant cobwebs hanging from the ceiling and ants crawling all [View Full Entry]
