What a gem! I'm very glad that I did this trip, despite all the hassles that come with a VERY touristy part of Spain. I went with Julia Travel again (the same crew that took me to Gibraltar yesterday), and it was much better today. I was the last person to be picked up, which made the trip both there and back shorter and more enjoyable. We stopped at some random hotel/restaurant on the way there and back - I'm guessing the tour company has some kind of deal with them. Whatever. I didn't buy anything. I always bring my own snacks for these trips, because you just never know. I met a Cornish couple, Peter and Alice, in their 50s, who were taking 2 weeks in Portugal and Spain before heading back to work on ... read more

We have had a wonderful time here in Cordoba. The weather has been cool - cold but we have survived. When we first got here we all took a nap. I slept in my coat until the heat got our flat a little warmer. I would never say it was warm in here except when we slept under the nice comforters. So we've seen La Mezquita - the mosque that was converted into a chapel. It has so many different architectures throughout the structure. We've seen Roman ruins, the Alcaza (during the day and at night for the light fountain show). We saw a flamenco show. The music and dance was grand. We've eaten a variety of food at a variety of times. It's been great traveling with Nicky and Tim. I am sad to hear ... read more

Er hat olles überspielt, meine Damen und Herren. Und warten S' noch a bisserl, warten S' no a bisserl; dann können wir uns vielleicht ein Vierterl genehmigen. Also das, das musst miterlebt haben. Home of Maimonides and his Muslim equivalent Averoës, seat of the Caliphate and a major triumph of the Reconquista, Cordoba is steeped in history for all three Abrahamic religions. We began our historical tour yesterday by exploring the Juderia, which includes the Plaza Juda Levi and Plaza Maimonides and the Casa Sfard, a Jewish Museum with a strong emphasis on Maimonides. One fascinating thing we learned was that the Spanish still use the term 'mantenerse sus trece' (literally to hold one's 13) to mean to hold one's ground, a reference to Maimonides', 13 Principles of Faith. Casa Sfard also had a small but interesting exhibition about significant Jewish women of historic Cordoba, with imaginative photographic images of how they may have looked. The synagogue is closed for renovations in the lead-up to its 700th anniversary but ... read more

The lovely city of Cordaba is our gateway to Southern Spain, which still bears the influences of hundreds of years of Moorish rule in its arches, decorative style and, above all, delightful interior courtyards. Our first encounter with the beauty of Cordoba courtyards (or patios as the Spanish call them) was on arrival at our accomodation. We are staying in a lovely old house built around an airy interior courtyard filled with plants and with arches leading to an additional courtyard with a refreshing plunge pool, much enjoyed as the weather here is much hotter!Almost every building in Córdoba has a shady interior courtyard and it is often possible to get a glimpse of them if the gates are open to the street. It would be magnificent to be here in spring ... read more

The topic of the colour of the earth took second place as the colour of the roadside verges changed. The yellow is still there as vivid as ever but now it is interspersed with Oleanders in pinks, white and reds. We criss crossed the Guadalquivir river – one of those major rivers of the world. Those of us of a certain age will remember studying the Guadalquivir . We arrived at our campsite just after 3 in the tiny town of Villafranca de Cordoba. Another blisteringly white Spanish town shimmering in the afternoon sun. There are two possible campsites within striking distance of the city of Cordoba. This one 22 kms distant, more out in the country and with a welcoming swimming pool. The other Camping Brilliante within walking distance. Alberofoli sounded nicer after reading all ... read more

Tuesday morning I woke in Seville and was moving pretty quick. Time to pack and move on. What a treat it had been to spend 4 nights in one place! Showered and packed, I headed out for my last Seville breakfast. I swear this is the best place in the World (at least the parts of the World that I’ve been to) for a fresh glass of orange juice. With my standard AM jump starter in front of me (OJ, Espresso, ham and tomato sandwich), I read and enjoyed the sweet morning. Today I was hoping on my first train in Spain and headed to Cordoba. I wasn’t planning much time in this small city, but was quite excited to get there. Back at the hotel, I gathered my things, thanked and said goodbye to the ... read more

Cordoba Spain 28 Aug 2013 Today we were on the road before 9.00am with directions to a suitable park for campers in Cordoba which was 4 kms away. We found it easily and the park only had 3 other vehicles in it (including another motor home). We immediately saw the old wall which surrounded the old city. We also saw the turrets of The Alcazar which was built by Christian monarchs. We had to walk through the only gate to the city which was built by the Romans in the 1st century AD. As Cordoba increased its importance in the Roman Empire, a Castellum was built on the top of the hill in the 6th century. We walked around the gardens and ducked in and out of the different rooms and corridors as well as walked ... read more

I almost turned off the alarm this morning and went back to sleep. I'm so glad that I didn't. The mosque and cathedral are well worth an early start. At 8:30am the gates and doors are opened for visitors who do not want a tour. The entry is free and the information I had read said that you were supposed to make your visit in silence. The exterior wall of the mosque/cathedral is imposing and contains a large number of gates (most kept closed) and square turrets. There is a tower on the north side, called the Puerta del Perdon, where on feast days debtors were released from their obligations. Adjoining this is a small altar to the Virgin of the Lights, as it is illuminated at night. It's altar piece is a painting by the ... read more

CORDOBA SUNDAY 16TH TO TUESDAY 18TH JUNE It's Monday night (I think) and I'm sitting in the courtyard/bar of the El Conquistador Hotel in Cordoba. Another amazing place! Unlike hilly Toledo, Cordoba is flat and the old town, known as the Jewish Quarter, is compact and quite easy to get around. The train journey from Toledo went well and I was here in the hotel around 1:30pm yesterday. I took a short walk - short because again it was very hot - 38 degrees! - and then sat in the bar until it was time to walk the short distance to the Royal Stables for the 'Espectaculo Ecuestre' (Equestria Show) showcasing the Andalucian horses - dancing flamenco with brightly dressed women, racing in a 'chariot' like rig, and making movements that looked like they were skipping, ... read more
